Aim of study: To determine the effects of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) and tilapia nilotica (Oreochromis niloticus var. Spring) in monoculture and co-culture on water quality variables and production in earthen ponds during dry and rainy seasons.Area of study: A shrimp farm (total area 20 ha) at Chiripa, San Blas Nayarit, Northwest coast of Mexico (21° 37' 34.53 " N; 105° 18' 16.31" W).Material and methods: Two production cycles were performed in a completely randomized design consisting of two treatments and three replications each during rainy season (September-December) and dry season (February-May). Shrimp was the main crop and tilapia the secondary species.Main results: White shrimp (10 org/m2) can be co-cultured with Nile tilapia at a stocking high density (4 org/m2), leading to improved water quality and better utilization of nutrients in dry season than in rainy season. However, the shrimp’ highest weight was recorded in the tilapia-shrimp co-culture ponds during rainy season due to higher water temperature and better quality of live food. The mean individual weight, biomass and survival of the shrimp, in co-culture ponds were greater than those of the shrimp monoculture, in the two seasons studied.Research highlights: There was a trend towards greater concentration of nutrients in the water of the monoculture ponds and, lower dissolved oxygen and higher BOD5 in co-culture ponds in the dry season than in the rainy season.

Abstract This study aims to determine the effectiveness of supplementation of sodium (Na) alginate Sargassum sp. from Lampung waters to enhance the non-specific immune response and the resistence of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) against white spot disease. This study used a completely randomized design with 3 treatments, namely feeding without alginate supplementation (A) or control, dietary Na alginate Sargassum supplementation at a dose of 2.0 (B), and 4.0 g kg−1 feed (C), each with four replications, for 14 days. Hemolymph sampling was performed on days 0, 7 and 14 to observe the parameter of shrimp hematology included total haemocyte count (THC), phagocytocyte activity (PA), phagocytic index (PI), and total plasma protein (TPP). The hepatopancreas histology profile and water quality were observed at the end of treatment. Data were analyzed by Anova at 95% of confidence interval and continued with Duncan test. Result showedthat the supplementation of Na alginat from Sargassum sp. significantly enhance several shrimp immune response namely THC, PA, and TPP. Meanwhile, the histology of the hepatopancreas of both shrimp treatment and control showed not significantly effect on tissue damage. The water quality was still in normal condition during the treatment. The results of this study indicate that the application of Sargassum alginate supplementation at a dose of 2gr/kg of feed is the best treatment to enhance the immune response of Pacific white shrimp.

In the present investigation, we evaluated if the presence of tilapia affects growth and survival of shrimp during pre-growth and grow-out phases. In both experiments, we used a random-blocks design in a single earth pond (0.75 ha) that was prepared and divided into nine (7 x 30 m) enclosures that were considered to be three blocks of three enclosures each. Each randomly stocked block consisted on Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (30 shrimp/m2) and three different densities (0.0, 0.25 and 0.50 fish/m2) of red tilapia hybrids (Oreochromis mossambicus x Oreochromis niloticus) to give three different treatments with three replicates. The results from the pre-growth and grow-out experiments followed the same trend. In both cases, we found no significant statistical differences (P>0.05) in the final average weight of the shrimp. However, the experimental blocks had a significant (P<0.05) effect on the mean sample weight of shrimp. Shrimp in blocks B and C were significantly bigger than shrimp from block A (P<0.05). For both experiments, we found no effect of the presence of tilapias on survival or growth of shrimp.RESUMENEvaluamos si la presencia de tilapias libres afecta el crecimiento y la supervivencia de camarones en fase de preengorda y engorda. Para ambos experimentos, utilizamos un diseño de bloques al azar en un estanque rústico (0.75 ha) que fue preparado y dividido en nueve encierros (7 x 30 m), se formaron tres bloques con tres encierros cada uno. Cada encierro dentro de cada bloque fue aleatoriamente seleccionado para sembrar camarón blanco del Pacífico, Litopenaeus vannamei (30 camarones/m2) y tres diferentes densidades (0.0, 0.25 y 0.50 peces/m2) de híbrido de tilapia roja (Oreochromis mossambicus x Oreochromis niloticus) para formar tres tratamientos con tres réplicas. Los resultados del experimento de pre-engorda y engorda siguieron la misma tendencia. En ambos experimentos no encontramos diferencias estadísticamente en el crecimiento de los camarones ni en las tilapias. Sin embargo, los bloques experimentales presentaron diferencias significativas (P<0.05) en el peso promedio final. Los camarones de los bloques B y C fueron estadísticamente más grandes (P<0.05) que los del bloque A. Para las dos etapas de crecimiento de los camarones, no se observó un efecto de la presencia de tilapias sobre la sobrevivencia o crecimiento de los camarones.

The present research was conducted to study seasonal limnological parameters and record composition pattern of aquatic macro-invertebrates of the Rampur Ghol. GRS-BIOS/ASPT index was used to calculate the water quality class, Shannon Weiner diversity index (H’) and Piélou evenness index (e) were used to determine taxa richness of the macroinvertebrates. Altogether 281 individuals of 14 families and 313 individuals of 18 families were recorded in dry season and rainy season, respectively. Similarly, diversity index and evenness index values were recorded 0.98 and 0.85 in dry season; 1.075 and 0.86 in rainy season. On the basis of different aquatic macro-invertebrates, GRS-BIOS/ASPT Index value of four sampling sites fall in class II (moderately polluted), four sampling sites belong to water quality class IIIII (critically polluted) and remaining two sampling sites belong to water quality class III (heavily polluted). Similarly, in rainy season seven sites fall in water quality class II (moderately polluted) and three sampling sites belong to water quality class II-III (critically polluted).Journal of Institute of Science and Technology, 2014, 19(2): 58-64

This study analyzed the hydrochemical characteristics and microbial communities of karst water in Samcheok, Korea, and compared water quality results to identify the seasonal characteristics and hydrogeological connectivity of the study areas of Hamaengbang-ri, Gyogok-ri, Yeosam-ri, and the downtown area of Samcheok. Field survey and water quality analysis were performed in July 2019, February 2020, and April 2020. Hydrochemical analysis of karst water (groundwater and surface water) showed that most samples were comprised of Ca-HCO3 and that water–rock interactions were a dominant factor compared to precipitation and evaporation (crystallization). For seasonal characteristics, water–rock interactions appeared more active in the dry season than in the rainy season. Calcite weathering was dominant in the dry season, whereas dolomite weathering dominated the rainy season. Moreover, the saturation indexes for the dry and rainy seasons were less than and greater than 0, respectively, corresponding to an unsaturation (oversaturation) state; thus, white precipitate distributed in the study areas was deposited in the rainy season. Finally, as a result of analyzing the hydraulic characteristics between regions, hydrogeological similarities were identified between Hamaengbang-ri and Yeosam-ri, and between Gyogok-ri and downtown Samcheok, which suggested hydrogeological connectivity between each of the pairs.

SUMMARYThe aim of this work was to test the performance of a shrimp-tomato culture system (STCS) in an arid-semiarid region (Sonora, Mexico) and to evaluate the water quality variables and phytoplankton variation of shrimp effluent and that water returning from the tomato module culture. The field study was conducted using groundwater and consisted of three circular tanks that were used for shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) farming and were coupled to one culture module of tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum). The shrimp effluent was used to irrigate the tomato plants. The yield was 11.1±0.2 kg shrimp per tank (3.9±2.0 ton ha−1) and 33.3 kg tomatoes per 45 plants (36.1±2.3 ton ha−1). During the culture, the concentrations of nutrients were (mg L−1): total N-ammonia, <0.001–0.848; N-nitrite, <0.001–1.45; N-nitrate, 5.2–172.2; dissolved reactive-P, <0.005–0.343. A total of 35 taxa belonging to three different algal classes were observed: Chlorophyta (87 to 98%), Bacilliariophyta (2 to 9%) and Cyanophyta (0–3%). This STCS allowed us to harvest the equivalent of 3.9 ton ha−1 of shrimp and 36.3 ton ha−1 of tomatoes, with a water consumption of 2.1 m3 per kg harvested of both products.
