The COVID-19 pandemic has left other pathologies commonly present in the population in a secondary context. Therefore, it is necessary to study the evolution of these diseases in the presence or absence of COVID-19. Objectives: The present study had the following objectives: 1. To evaluate the relationship between the COVID-19 epidemic and the possible decrease in deaths from respiratory diseases in Chile. 2 Study the relationship between meteorological variables and severity of COVID-19 with respect to deaths from respiratory diseases from January 2018 to February 2021. Methods: The variable number of deaths due to respiratory diseases in Chile was analyzed considering the monthly records of meteorological variables (temperature, precipitation and humidity) in each Region of Chile and severity of COVID-19, to evaluate the mortality trend before and after the pandemic. For this, different Non-Observable Heterogeneity Models for Panel Data were used. Results: Our findings show that among the variables that affect the mortality rate from respiratory diseases, there are the number of deaths from COVID-19 that has a negative effect, the number of patients with COVID-19 in intensive care unit (ICU) that has a positive effect and the minimum temperature with a negative effect. These results are supported by the application of the panel regression with one-way random-effects models. Conclusion: This study revealed that there is an unexpected reduction in deaths from respiratory diseases in Chile in the post-pandemic period. Therefore, it can be concluded that this variable decreased with the appearance of the COVID-19 pandemic.

AbstractThe study aims to investigate the relationship between board size and firm’s performance for a sample of non-financial French firms listed on the CAC 40 between 2005 and 2017. We estimated the firm’s performance using two types of metrics, the accounting-based measures (ROA and ROE) and the market-based measures (Tobin Q and MTB). By applying the panel data regressions (fixed-effects and random-effects), the findings show that there is a positive effect of board size on firm performance. In addition, our results show that the optimal number of the board size should be between 13 and 17 members in order to achieve good performance for non-financial French firms.

Profitability is used as a prime indicator to measure the sustainable performance of an organization. The current study made an attempt to apply the DuPont model to investigate the multilevel profitability determinants for the pharmaceutical industry of India. The study also estimates an empirical model to predict the association of profitability with factors such as profit margin, asset utilization, leverage, interest load and tax load of firms in the pharmaceutical industry of India. For this purpose, a dataset for 170 companies from 2010–2011 to 2018–2019 was analysed initially by using panel data regression followed by stepwise panel data regression. The study successfully applied and tested the DuPont model with respect to the firms of the pharmaceutical industry in India. It was found that the factors such as profit margin, asset utilization and leverage had a significant positive effect on the firms’ profitability and the factor interest load had a significant negative effect on the firms’ profitability. The tax load does not have an impact on the profitability of the pharmaceutical firms in India. These findings are expected to provide a guide for understanding the profitability of the firms in a better way.

The nature of the relationship between the time people spend on paid work and volunteering remains debated in the social sciences. Time constraint theory suggests a negative relationship because people can allocate only as much time to volunteering as their work responsibilities permit. However, social integration theory suggests a more complex inverse U-shaped relationship because paid work not only limits people’s free time but also plays a key role in their social integration. Departing from these competing theories, this study uses two-wave panel data from Denmark to examine the relationship between hours of paid work and volunteering. In support of time constraint theory, the results suggest that hours of paid work have a significant negative effect on the total number of hours that people spend volunteering, not mainly because paid work hours affect people’s propensity to volunteer but because they affect the number of hours that volunteers contribute.
