By means of the techniques of external electrodes and microelectrodes, it was found that evanescent flow of an alternating current through plasmalemma of <i>Characeae</i> cells neutralises oscillatory change in their electrical resistance and reversibly diminishes its value. This effect is particularly significant in the case of "high resistance cells", but it weakens with increasing temperature. The value of the estimated activation energy indicates that, after flow of the alternating current through the membrane, a rapid increase in the conductivity may be caused by an increase in conductivity of potassium channels. This result seems to support the hypothesis of electroconformational feedback.

Abstract Background Burning fast-growing trees for energy production can be an effective alternative to coal combustion. Thus, lignocellulosic material, which can be used to obtain chemicals with a high added value, is highly abundant, easily renewed and usually inexpensive. In this work, hemicellulose extraction by acid hydrolysis of plant biomass from three different crops (Chamaecytisus proliferus, Leucaena diversifolia and Paulownia trihybrid) was modelled and the resulting solid residues were used for energy production. Results The influence of the nature of the lignocellulosic raw material and the operating conditions used to extract the hemicellulose fraction on the heat capacity and activation energy of the subsequent combustion process was examined. The heat power and the activation energy of the combustion process were found to depend markedly on the hemicellulose content of the raw material. Thus, a low content in hemicelluloses resulted in a lower increased energy yield after acid hydrolysis stage. The process was also influenced by the operating conditions of the acid hydrolysis treatment, which increased the gross calorific value (GCV) of the solid residue by 0.6–9.7% relative to the starting material. In addition, the activation energy of combustion of the acid hydrolysis residues from Chamaecytisus proliferus (Tagasaste) and Paulownia trihybrid (Paulownia) was considerably lower than that for the starting materials, the difference increasing with increasing degree of conversion as well as with increasing temperature and acid concentration in the acid hydrolysis. The activation energy of combustion of the solid residues from acid hydrolysis of tagasaste and paulownia decreased markedly with increasing degree of conversion, and also with increasing temperature and acid concentration in the acid hydrolysis treatment. No similar trend was observed in Leucaena diversifolia (Leucaena) owing to its low content in hemicelluloses. Conclusions Acid hydrolysis of tagasaste, leucaena and paulownia provided a valorizable liquor containing a large amount of hemicelluloses and a solid residue with an increased heat power amenable to efficient valorization by combustion. There are many potential applications of the hemicelluloses-rich and lignin-rich fraction, for example as multi-components of bio-based feedstocks for 3D printing, for energy and other value-added chemicals.

Phosphorylation of red cell membranes at ambient temperatures with micromolar [32P]ATP in the presence of Na ions produced phosphoenzyme that was dephosphorylated rapidly upon the addition of ADP or K ions. However, as first observed by Blostein (1968, J. Biol. Chem., 243:1957), the phosphoenzyme formed at 0 degrees C under otherwise identical conditions was insensitive to the addition of K ions but was dephosphorylated rapidly by ADP. This suggested that the conformational transition from ADP-sensitive, K-insensitive Na pump phosphoenzyme (E1 approximately P) to K-sensitive, ADP-insensitive phosphoenzyme (E2P) is blocked at 0 degrees C. Since the ATP:ADP exchange reaction is a partial reaction of the overall enzyme cycle dependent upon the steady state level of E1 approximately P that is regulated by [Na], we examined the effects of temperature on the curve relating [Na] to ouabain-sensitive ATP:ADP exchange. The characteristic triphasic curve seen at higher temperatures when [Na] was between 0.5 and 100 mM was not obtained at 0 degrees C. Simple saturation was observed instead with a K0.5 for Na of approximately 1 mM. The effect of increasing temperature on the ATP:ADP exchange at fixed (150 mM) Na was compared with the effect of increasing temperature on (Na + K)-ATPase activity of the same membrane preparation. It was observed that (a) at 0 degrees C, there was significant ouabain-sensitive ATP:ADP exchange activity, (b) at 0 degrees C, ouabain-sensitive (Na + K)-ATPase activity was virtually absent, and (c) in the temperature range 5-37 degrees C, there was an approximately 300-fold increase in (Na + K)-ATPase activity with only a 9-fold increase in the ATP:ADP exchange. These observations are in keeping with the suggestion that the E1 approximately P----E2P transition of the Na pump in human red cell membranes is blocked at 0 degrees C. Previous work has shown that the inhibitory effect of Na ions and the low-affinity stimulation by Na of the rate of ATP:ADP exchange occur at the extracellular surface of the Na pump. The absence of both of these effects at 0 degrees C, where E1 approximately P is maximal, supports the idea that external Na acts through sites on the E2P form of the phosphoenzyme.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to dry ‘bacaba’ (Oenocarpus bacaba Mart.) pulp under different thermal conditions, fit different mathematical models to the dehydration curves, and calculate the diffusion coefficients, activation energy and thermodynamic properties of the process. ‘Bacaba’ fruits were meshed to obtain the pulp, which was dried at temperatures of 40, 50 and 60 °C and with thickness of 1.0 cm. Increase in drying temperature reduced the dehydration times, as well as the equilibrium moisture contents, and drying rates of 0.65, 1.04 and 1.25 kg kg min-1 were recorded at the beginning of the process for temperatures of 40, 50 and 60 °C, respectively. The Midilli’s equation was selected as the most appropriate to predict the drying phenomenon, showing the highest R2, lowest values of mean square deviation (MSD) and χ2 under most thermal conditions, and random distribution of residuals under all experimental conditions. The effective diffusion coefficients increased with increasing temperature, with magnitudes of the order of 10-9 m2 s-1, being satisfactorily described by the Arrhenius equation, which showed activation energy (Ea) of 37.01 kJ mol-1. The drying process was characterized as endergonic, in which enthalpy (ΔH) and entropy (ΔS) reduced with the increment of temperature, while Gibbs free energy (ΔG) was increased.

In order to optimize the current reduction process of chromite, a good knowledge of reduction mechanism involved is required. The basic component in chromite ore is FeCr2O4, thus, kinetic investigation of synthetic FeCr2O4 with different amount of carbon were carried out in the temperature range of 1473K to 1673K under both isothermal and non-isothermal mode. The iron can be easily reduced compared with chromium. And higher reduction degree of chromite can be achieved by increasing temperature and carbon content. With the supporting of X-ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope methods, the formation of metallic products followed the sequence: Fe-C alloy, (Fe,Cr)7C3and Fe-Cr-C alloy. Kinetics analysis showed that the first stage was controlled by nucleation with an apparent activation energy of 120kJ/mol, while the chromium reduction was controlled by crystallochemical transformation with an apparent activation energy of 288kJ/mol.

AbstractThe effect of tribological wear of contacts made from an AgNi10 alloy on microstructure and electrical properties was investigated. The contacts were tested in duty cycles loaded with alternating current of 10A intensity. With this value of the current, intensive arcing of contacts occurred. The contacts were tested in the range of 125 to 500 thousand cycles. The contacting surfaces were reported to suffer a high degree of wear, but electrical resistance of the contact system remained stable.

Abstract This study seeks to investigate the effects of temperature (50, 60, 70 and 80 °C) and material thickness (3, 5 and 7 mm), on the drying characteristics of pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata). Experimental data were used to estimate the effective moisture diffusivities and activation energy of pumpkin by using solutions of Fick’s second law of diffusion or its simplified form. The calculated value of moisture diffusivity with and without shrinkage effect varied from a minimum of 1.942 × 10–8 m2/s to a maximum of 9.196 × 10–8 m2/s, while that of activation energy varied from 5.02158 to 32.14542 kJ/mol with temperature ranging from 50 to 80 °C and slice thickness of 3 to 7 mm at constant air velocity of 1.16 m/s, respectively. The results indicated that with increasing temperature, and reduction of slice thickness, the drying time was reduced by more than 30 %. The effective moisture diffusivity increased with an increase in drying temperature with or without shrinkage effect. An increase in the activation energy was observed due to an increase in the slice thickness of the pumpkin samples.
