This paper proposes a simplified method to estimate the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) for both coarse- and fine-grained soils using one-point SWCC measurement and basic index properties. Parameters of the Fredlund and Xing SWCC equation were correlated with the basic properties of 60 soils: 30 soils each of coarse- and fine-grained types. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the location of the one-point measurement at matric suctions of 10 and 500 kPa gave the most reliable SWCC using the proposed method for coarse- and fine-grained soils, respectively. The validity of the proposed method was evaluated using a total of 62 soils collated from published literature with 31 soils each of the coarse- and fine-grained types. The proposed method gives a good estimation of the SWCC and uses fewer parameters when compared with existing one-point SWCC estimation methods.

In the framework of the research project of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic TA 02011350 “Investigation of properties of diatomaceous clays and methods for improving their structure", clay properties have been investigated depending on the content of diatoms. To investigate the effects of diatom microfossil content on the index properties of clay soils, measuring tests were performed on cohesive soils with different diatom microfossils content.

AbstractIn this study, the relationships between geotechnical index properties and the pore-size distribution of compacted natural silt and artificial soil mixtures, namely, silt with two different clays and three different clay percentages (10%, 20%, and 40%), were examined and compared. Atterberg’s limit tests, standard compaction tests, mercury intrusion porosimetry, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface analysis were conducted. The results show that the liquid limit, the cumulative pore volume, and specific surface area of artificially mixed soils increase with an increase in the percentage of clay. The cumulative pore volume and specific surface area with geotechnical index properties were compared. High correlation coefficients were observed between the specific areas and both the liquid limit and the plasticity index, as well as between the cumulative pore volume and both the clay percentage and the
