Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the relation between parents’ physical activity and a child’s physical activity in leisure time and to identify the extent parents engage in physical education of their children. Methods: The research was conducted among randomly selected parents of children aged 7-10 years living in Cracow. The study involved 334 parents (children aged 7-8 years), 365 (children aged 8-9 years) and 317 (children aged 9-10 years). The diagnostic survey method was used in the study, and the basic technique was a questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed to evaluate the level of parents’ physical activity, their children’s physical activity, and parents’ interest in their children’s physical education. The SPSS 21 (IBM Corp., 2012), chi-square signifi cance test and Spearman rho correlation analysis were used for the statistical analysis of the data. Results: The results have shown that the level of parents’ engagement in the physical activity of children at a school age (85.1%) was very low. The parents’ physical activity was clearly aff ected by their education and socio-economic status. The fi ndings have also indicated that the highest number of children aged 7-10 (39.8%) pursue physical activity at an average level. The highest level of physical activity was detected in a small group of children (4.1%) and low and very low in 34.7% of participants. The level of parents’ interest in the physical activity of children was mostly moderate (45.4%). However, a considerable number of parents (41.4%) exhibited a low level of interest. Conclusion: The level of physical activity of parents and their children in leisure time is low. It was found that a child’s depends on family socio-economic status, parents’ educational background, their physical activity and engagement in physical education of a child.

In the context of education, this study examined the relationship between perceiving a transformational physical education (PE) teacher and student’s leisure-time physical activity (PA). Furthermore, we tested the potential mediation role of motivational learning climate, passion and self-determined motivation in this relationship. The sample was composed of 2210 high-school PE students (1145 males, 1065 females) between 16 and 20 years of age. Results of structural equation modeling revealed that the perceived transformational PE teacher–PA outcomes relationship was stronger when students perceived a task-involving climate, when they were harmoniously passionate, and when they were self-determined. We conclude that students’ health-enhancing behaviours could be improved if their PE teachers use transformational teaching style and created a task-oriented learning climate.

AbstractObjectiveTo assess the prevalence of high blood pressure (BP) and the association of overweight and obesity with high BP among adolescents in Aracaju, Brazil.DesignCross-sectional study. The main outcome measure was the proportion of adolescents with high BP (sex-, age- and height-specific ≥95th percentile). The main predictor variables were overweight and obesity defined according to the criteria of the International Obesity Task Force. Other covariates included age, socio-economic status and leisure-time physical activity.SettingAracaju, Brazil, capital city of Sergipe State, north-eastern Brazil.SubjectsA random sample of 1002 adolescents (442 boys and 560 girls) aged 12–17 years selected from twenty public schools and ten private schools were studied.ResultsThe prevalence of high BP was 16·9 % (95 % CI 13·1, 21·7) in boys and 12·9 % (95 % CI 9·0, 18·0) in girls. After adjusting for age, socio-economic status and leisure-time physical activity in both boys and girls, overweight (prevalence ratio (PR) = 1·93, 95 % CI 1·08, 3·48; PR = 4·34, 95 % CI 2·58, 7·30, respectively) and obesity (PR = 4·87, 95 % CI 2·35, 10·11; PR = 5·18, 95 % CI 2·67, 10·06, respectively) were found to be associated with high BP.ConclusionsThese findings indicate a high prevalence of high BP in both boys and girls in Aracaju, Brazil. Overweight and obesity were strongly associated with high BP. These findings underscore the urgent need for public health measures to prevent increasing high BP in adolescents in Brazil. Targeting intervention in adolescence may be a critical method for preventing high BP in later life.

The facilitative role of perceived autonomy support from physical education (PE) teachers on adolescents’ leisure-time physical activity (PA) has been supported. This study aimed to examine the mechanism by which perceived controlling behaviors from PE teachers relate to adolescents’ objectively measured leisure-time PA. In a three-wave prospective study, a total of 159 students (64 boys) aged 11 to 19 years old (Mage = 14.94 years; SD = 2.11) completed measures of perceived controlling behavior, frustration of the basic psychological needs, and motivational regulations in PE. One week later, motivational regulations towards leisure-time moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) were assessed. Five weeks later, MVPA was measured using accelerometers (ActiGraph GT3X) during seven consecutive days. Structural equation modeling analysis indicated that perceived controlling behavior predicted students’ frustration of basic psychological needs in PE. The competence need frustration in PE had a negative direct effect on objectively measured MVPA. A significant indirect effect supported the mediating role of competence frustration in PE in the relation between perceived controlling behavior from PE teachers and MVPA in adolescents. Findings suggest that future interventions striving to promote adolescents’ PA engagement in their leisure-time should focus on decreasing controlling behaviors from teachers in PE that may manipulate the teacher–student relation.

A battery of six tests assessing various aspects of receptive and expressive oral language was administered to 27 cerebral palsied children and controls matched on the variables of age, intelligence, sex, race, hearing acuity, socio-economic status, and similarity of educational background. Results indicated only minimal differences between groups. Signs of deviancy in language behavior often attributed to the cerebral palsied were not observed. Although previous investigators have suggested consistent language disturbances in the cerebral palsied, evidence for a disorder of comprehension and formulation of oral symobls was not found.
