Knowledge and Practice of Dietary Habits and Healthy Lifestyle in a Sample of Medical and non Medical College Students in Baghdad

The aim is to study the attitude of medical college students to the issues of tobacco smoking. 100 students (11 boys, 89 girls) of senior courses of Cheboksary Medical College were anonymously surveyed using the questionnaire developed by Tamaki et al., consisting of 20 questions on various aspects of tobacco smoking. Mathematical and statistical processing was carried out with the help of descriptive statistics and  2-distribution (table 2×2). 37% of college students smoked at least once, young men did it more often than girls. At the time of the survey, 17% smoked periodically. 43% were exposed to passive smoking, significantly more frequent these were men; 20% of respondents faced it every day, on average – 2.1±2.8 days a week. Staying in public places with smoke from cigarettes was marked by 25%, bars, discos – by 20%, places of residence – by 10%, others – by 11%. Young men were more exposed to secondhand smoking in public places and bars, discos than girls. Most commonly (78%) unfamiliar people smoked in the presence of students; as for smoking students their fathers smoked more often. 77% agreed that medical students shouldn't smoke, 5% didn't consider it a problem, 18% thought that they could smoke if they wanted. 90% were against smoking in society, 90% were against smoking among patients (10% didn't object), 71% were against smoking among medical professionals – (29% did not object). 96% agreed with the statement that health workers should be an example of healthy lifestyle for the population agreed and 87% agreed that their freedom from tobacco smoking can have a positive influence on patients. 98% of students received information about the harm of smoking during their studies. 97% believed they could give comprehensive advice to smoking people. Comparing the responses of medical college students and prospective physicians showed a similarity of opinions on most of the questions asked. Smoking among medical students is largely due to the close environment of smoking people from among relatives and friends. They are more often subjected to secondhand smoke at home (residence). These students are more tolerant of other people's smoking, including patients and health workers, which reduces the effectiveness of anti-smoking interventions.

Dietary habits of every human impact her or his health. The society-wide situation with regard to the dietary habits is not positive according to the existent surveys, and the same applies to the college students. This paper goal is to identify the dietary habits frequented among the college students at a selected institution (a case study); evaluate the habits; and, propose actions for the institution under review, aimed to positively influence their students’ dietary habits. The paper has been designed as a case study, while the data has been obtained from the evaluation of a quantitative survey (based on an executed questionnaire survey) including the total of n = 219 college students of the selected educational institution. As revealed by the results, there is a statistically significant difference in the students’ dietary habits according to gender and age category.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) which is caused by poor dietary habits and sedentary behavior is a serious global health problem. MetS is a cluster of risk factors, represented by central obesity, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. In the 21st century, MetS and associated comorbidities, including obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, are the major threats to human health. Practical dietary strategies, nutritional bioactive compounds and a healthy lifestyle are claimed to be efficient in the management of one or more components of MetS. Nevertheless successful management of MetS and commodities is still a major concern. Since hyperglycemia, inflammation and redox imbalance are intrinsically involved in the progression of MetS comorbidities, finding effective strategies that precisely target these systems is highly warranted. In this scenario, pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches with or without dietary patterns, phytochemicals or exercise interventions are the practical strategies to combat MetS and associated diseases. However, designing and prescribing of optimal nutritional patterns and exercise regimens remains a big challenge to achieve the maximum beneficial effects. This thematic issue addressed the concerns and provided practical strategies to overcome the malady of MetS in the modern world.

Obesity is an issue for young adults in the U.S. This population is particularly vulnerable to weight gain as they move from adolescence to young adulthood, especially as they transition from high school to college. Adopting a health promotion approach, a university-based cluster of researchers, community advocates, and a technology partner embarked on a two-year seed development project that focused on development, implementation, and evaluation of a web-based healthy lifestyle intervention for college students. Using a mixed-method design, two convenience samples of residential university students were recruited to participate in a 4-week intervention called Eat, Move, Live, in which they interacted with a newly-created comprehensive website about management of a healthy lifestyle. Participants’ post-intervention readiness for change increased by 15% (eating and life balance behaviors) to 23% (moving behaviors). Participants reported increased awareness of eating behaviors, and feelings of engagement in tracking their fruit and vegetable consumption. Findings suggest that technology may be utilized to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of achieving students’ individual goals related to healthy living. These preliminary findings have implications for increasing the development and implementation of technological approaches to health promotion for young adult students.
