The King Hussein Foundation (KHF) partners with Oxfam in the Youth Participation and Employment programme (YPE) to promote entrepreneurship through supporting youth to engage in business start-ups and scale-ups. KHF projects support community-based organizations (CBOs) in establishing revolving funds, training CBOs in microfinance management and building the capacity of potential entrepreneurs. Apprenticeships and shadowing are two examples of popular approaches to facilitating entrepreneurship and self-employment. During the COVID-19 crisis, KHF has continued the implementation of activities virtually. This case study presents examples of young people utilizing financial support, reaching out to new clients using ICT, and eventually exploring ways to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19.

This article aims to discuss the process of development and improvement of a community web portal from the perspective of references such as social capital, solidary technology, local development and community organizing. As a case study we used the Cidade de Deus web portal (www.cidadededeus.org.br), result of a project of the Technical Solidarity Lab (Soltec / UFRJ) with community-based organizations (CBOs) of Cidade de Deus. Our main hypothesis is that more important than the technology itself, the process of developing this technology in a participatory manner can encourage community participation.

Background/Context Over the past two decades, scholars have increasingly called for educational leaders to collaborate with community-based organizations in their efforts to bring about school reform. Observing that school reform efforts often fail to include those most impacted by failing policies and practices, these scholars have turned their attention to the role of community organizations that advocate on behalf of parents and students in under-served communities. These scholars have explored the potential of community organizing strategies for transforming public schools, documenting the crucial role of strategic alliances between community-based organizations and school district officials in bringing about greater equity and improved student outcomes. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study The purpose of this study is to explore how educational leaders and community-based organizations collaborated to bring about unprecedented education reform in the nation's second largest school district. Research Design This historical case study is based on in-depth interviews with 11 high-profile school district, union, community, and other educational leaders across seven key partner institutions and organizations that were involved in the development of the Belmont Zone of Choice from 2001 to 2009. Conclusions/Recommendations This study reveals the kinds of obstacles facing reformers in large urban school districts, and it illustrates how concerned educators, community-based organizations, and educational reformers can form strategic alliances to fight for meaningful change in underserved communities. Rather than provide a simplistic or idealistic depiction of collaboration, however, this case study illustrates the tensions and struggles that emerged as diverse—and sometimes antagonistic—social actors collaborated to bring about education reform at the local level. It also illustrates that strategic alliances are not necessarily sufficient to ensure successful reform implementation within contexts of political and economic asymmetry. As such, the history of the Belmont Zone of Choice highlights both the promise and challenge of community organizing for school reform.

Public knowledge and understanding of health disparities is critical to generate support for programs and policies that address social determinants of health (SDH). Yet, public programs and policies are little informed by evidence or the link between SDH and health outcomes. This case study, using community-based participatory research principles, draws from the evidence of SDH and communication sciences. We describe Project IMPACT, an intervention to build capacity among community-based organizations (CBOs) to engage with media strategically, with the goal of influencing the information environment. The case offers an example of implementation science supporting an evidence-based approach, rather than a specific program or practice. We report how IMPACT leveraged the role community partners play in legitimizing issues so SDH and disparities are part of the public agenda. We assessed how strategic media engagement practices were implemented with the ultimate goal of changing public understanding of SDH and disparities to support SDH-related policies.

What roles do parent and family engagement and community outreach play in educator efforts to improve low-performing urban schools? To address this question, we considered findings from our 3-year case study of Brookdale Elementary (a pseudonym), which was undergoing a state-mandated, district-directed turnaround reform effort from 2011 to 2014. Specifically, we investigated how and why school personnel engaged with and reacted to parents and families, community-based organizations, and the surrounding locale. In the end, the school’s educators encountered complicated obstacles yet generated some tangible victories in their pursuit of productive school, parent/family, and community connections. We conclude by considering implications of our findings.

Oxfam partners with the Jordanian Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD) through its Youth Participation and Employment (YPE) programme in order to connect with communities and train local community-based organizations (CBOs). JOHUD’s aim is to build the job-seeking capacity of youth in four governorates in Jordan. The programme organizes informal activities involving peer-to-peer education to help young people engage in the community as volunteers, and links them to various governmental and non-governmental institutions. COVID-19 and the associated lockdowns have altered the organization’s operations, with most projects shifting online. JOHUD has adopted a youth-led initiative aimed at matching young people’s skills with labour-market demand in each governorate where the programme operates. This case study presents examples of how the programme has helped young people transform into professionals, and how youth-led employment centres can contribute to youth development activities.

A growing body of research examining the social and political implications of geographic information systems (GIS) considers the extent to which the use of this technology may empower or disempower different actors and institutions. However, these studies have tended not to articulate a clear conceptualization of empowerment. Thus, in this paper, I develop a multidimensional conceptual framework for assessing empowerment (and disempowerment), and employ it in examining the impacts of GIS use by community-based organizations engaged in urban planning and neighborhood revitalization. Drawing on a case study conducted with a Minneapolis, Minnesota, neighborhood organization, I show how this multidimensional framework fosters a more complete analysis of empowerment, and therefore, development of a more detailed explanation of the impacts of this new technology.
