An air quality monitoring network (AQMN) is a basic piece of environmental management due to that it satisfies the major role in monitoring of environment emissions, in special relevance to target air pollutants. An adequate installation would lead to support high efficiency of the network. Therefore, AQMN pre-layout should be considered as an essential factor in regarding with the location of fixed measurement stations within AQMN, as the minimum number of sampling points. Nevertheless, once AQMN has been already installed, and given that the spatial air pollutants pattern can vary along time, an assessment of the AQMN design would be addressed in order to identify the presence of potential redundant fixed monitoring stations. This approach would let to improve the AQMN performance, reduce maintenance costs of the network and consolidate the investment on those more efficient fixed stations. The chapter includes aspects relative to air pollutants measured by networks, their representativeness, limitations, importance, and the future needs. It ponders the need of re-assessment of the AQMN layout for assuring (i) a right evaluation of the human being exposure to atmospheric pollutants and controlling the environmental emissions into the atmosphere and (ii) an adequate performance of the network along time.

The aim of this study was to evaluate redundant measurements in the air quality monitoring network (AQMN) of Lisbon and Tagus Valley (LTV). With this purpose, the minimum number of monitoring sites that should operate was achieved using principal component analysis (PCA). The air pollution data was collected in twenty monitoring sites during the period from January to December 2006. The air pollutants analysed were CO, NO2, PM10 and O3.In this study, a different criterion for selection of the number of principal components (PCs) was applied. The PCs were selected representing at least 95% of the original data variance. Using this criterion, the PCs have more information about the air pollution data, increasing the confidence in the PCA results.The PCA results showed that, from twenty studied monitoring sites, only ten for CO, eleven for NO2, five for O3 and nine for PM10 were needed to characterize the region. The air pollutant analysers corresponding to the redundant measurements can be installed in non-monitored regions, allowing the enlargement of the air quality monitoring network.

The chemical industry is of paramount importance to the world economy and this industrial sector represents a substantial income source for developing countries. However, the chemical plants producing inside an industrial district pose a great threat to the surrounding atmospheric environment and human health. Therefore, designing an appropriate and available air quality monitoring network (AQMN) is essential for assessing the effectiveness of deployed pollution-controlling strategies and facilities. As monitoring facilities located at inappropriate sites would affect data validity, a two-stage data-driven approach constituted of a spatio-temporal technique (i.e. Bayesian maximum entropy) and a multi-objective optimization model (i.e. maximum concentration detection capability and maximum dosage detection capability) is proposed in this paper. The approach aims at optimizing the design of an AQMN formed by gas sensor modules. Owing to the lack of long-term measurement data, our developed atmospheric dispersion simulation system was employed to generate simulated data for the above method. Finally, an illustrative case study was implemented to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach, and results imply that this work is able to design an appropriate AQMN with acceptable accuracy and efficiency.

Abstract Background In auto paint workshops there are several chemical, physical and biological agents that are harmful to health, making it essential to guarantee the well-being and safety of workers. In this sense, the assessment of the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) of these places, in an associated context of occupational health, proves to be important. Methods The present study had as main objective to evaluate the occupational exposure of workers in an automobile painting workshop to particles and air pollutants. The data collection consisted of the evaluation of air quality, using for this purpose, the assessment of atmospheric pollutants carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), formaldehyde (CH2O), carbon dioxide sulfur (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10, breathable and inhalable particles) and the meteorological variables temperature and relative humidity. The collected data was processed using the statistical software IBM SPSS version 27.0. The interpretation of the statistical tests was performed with a 95% confidence level for a maximum random error up to 5%. Results We found that the concentrations of inhalable particles recorded in some workstations exceeded the legally established exposure limit value. Conclusions IAQ should be a priority concern for the government and for all professionals working in the area of Occupational Health and Safety having in mind the implementation of measures that promote the continuous improvement of the IAQ of the facilities, thus guaranteeing a good assessment and monitoring of workstations, preventing atmospheric pollutants from reaching concentrations that could put workers' health at risk.

<div>Air pollution is a severe problem growing over time. A dense air-quality monitoring network is needed to update the people regarding the air pollution status in cities. A low-cost sensor device (LCSD) based dense air-quality monitoring network is more viable than continuous ambient air quality monitoring stations (CAAQMS). An in-field calibration approach is needed to improve agreements of the LCSDs to CAAQMS. The present work aims to propose a calibration method for PM2.5 using domain adaptation technique to reduce the collocation duration of LCSDs and CAAQMS. A novel calibration approach is proposed in this work for the measured PM2.5 levels of LCSDs. The dataset used for the experimentation consists of PM2.5 values and other parameters (PM10, temperature, and humidity) at hourly duration over a period of three months data. We propose new features, by combining PM2.5, PM10, temperature, and humidity, that significantly improved the performance of calibration. Further, the calibration model is adapted to the target location for a new LCSD with a collocation time of two days. The proposed model shows high correlation coefficient values (R2) and significantly low mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) than that of other baseline models. Thus, the proposed model helps in reducing the collocation time while maintaining high calibration performance.</div>

Paper presents the results of air pollution analyses during last 8 years in Rezekne city. There is carried out a research of atmospheric dust particles, found correlations between concentrations of different air pollutants. Is given overview about air quality measurements in other countries, pointed out air ionization importance on air quality evaluation. The aim of the research – to ground the extension of air quality monitoring indicators including parameters of the air ionisation and to work out an action program to improve an air quality in working areas and recreating zones.
