Lean manufacturing first emerged in the automotive industry. However, low productivity and low efficiency in production are major problems for the majority of industries relying on a heavy workforce. Being one of these, the construction industry suffers from low productivity rates along with inefficient work practices. To prevent those, the industry has shifted its focus from the traditional approach to a more innovative one, which is called Lean construction. Lean construction aims to maximize value while minimizing waste. Therefore, it intends to create safer, smoother, and more efficient processes to eliminate waste. This chapter focuses on Lean construction and highlights the generic Lean tools and techniques practiced in the construction industry indicating its historical journey from Lean manufacturing. The chapter aims to raise awareness towards the efficiency of Lean methods in the construction industry with respect to practices observed in manufacturing.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has witnessed a huge increase in construction during the last two decades. However, many projects experienced time delays, cost overruns and the generation of massive amounts of waste. To address these challenges, lean construction has been introduced into the Saudi construction industry; however, it is still in its infancy. This study therefore investigates the current state of lean construction implementation in the construction industry in the KSA. The objectives are to identify: the types of construction waste, level of use of tools that support the implementation of lean construction, stages of application of lean methods, and the benefits of lean construction. To achieve these objectives, a structured questionnaire survey of 282 construction professionals was carried out. After the analysis of the collected data using mean score and Anova test, the following conclusions were made.  In the construction industry in the KSA, waiting is the most common type of waste, while Computer Aided Design (CAD) is the conventional tool supporting the implementation of lean construction. Furthermore, the data suggests that lean construction is most commonly used in the construction stage of projects while customer satisfaction is the main benefit derived from lean construction practices. This study concludes that the level of implementation of lean construction in the KSA construction industry is increasing. The results will help benchmark the current state of lean construction implementation, which will enable the construction industry to identify strategies to implement lean construction in Saudi Arabia in accordance with their needs and project goals, to achieve better productivity.

The study was conducted to investigate the level of implementation of lean manufacturing (LM) in Malaysian automotive industry. A number of survey methodologies were utilized to ensure reliability of the results of this study. Thirteen areas have been identified as typical workplaces implementing lean manufacturing. The study also investigated the benefits gained and obstacles faced by manufacturers in implementing the system. The frequency and tendency of applying lean tools in manufacturing environment have also been ranked.

Like many other countries, the presence of wasteful activities is very common in Kazakhstan’s construction industry. This severely affects the productivity of construction processes. Lean methodology maximizes the value of a process by minimizing wasteful or non-value adding (NVA) activities. This study aims to explore and quantify the impact NVA items on construction productivity. Several observations were made for construction processes in Astana, Kazakhstan to investigate and quantify various types of wasteful activities. Moreover, a survey was conducted to examine the general understanding of wasteful activities and Lean methods within the construction industry in Kazakhstan. In terms of wasteful activities, a similarity was found between the observed construction processes and survey results. Furthermore, apart from the commonly found seven types of wasteful activities, some other sources of waste, such as “preparation” and “break”, were found from the observations. Finally, wasteful activities were mapped with commonly used Lean tools, as found in the literature, so that productivity can be improved by minimizing NVA activities. From the mapping and the survey results, value stream mapping (VSM) was found to be the most effective Lean tool, since it facilitates increased visualization.

Lean Construction is one of the methods used to improve control over construction projects by eliminating waste in time and materials. Lean Construction is an adaptation from the Lean Manufacturing principles to the construction industry. The purpose of this article was to review the case studies published in 2018 in the Inspec database to find out where Lean is being implemented and how. The article approach by setting the search criteria first and then inspect the result to find the non-related results and eliminate it. After that, the article was reviewed and summarized. The article verifies each article finding; however Lean Construction and Building Information Modeling (BIM) are relatively new for the construction industry and they still need more time to be adopted widely and to be applied on a lower-cost budget. However, the discussed cases show a promising future for these technologies.

There is a philosophy in the construction industry to reduce the cost of a project by reducing construction waste and improving productivity. With lower expenses, lean construction emphasizes the cost of the project at a minimum cost. Globally, the philosophy has gained a wide range of popularity in the construction sector. The Lean Construction has helped practitioners with several tools and techniques to implement at different stages of a construction project. Following global trends, this study has investigated lean practices in Pakistan. With the potential advantages experienced by its implementation in Pakistan's construction projects and the level of implementation of various types of tools and techniques has been analyzed. To achieve the goal, the study had tried to capture construction projects in which four shareholders are being represented, which are clients, consultants, contractors and material suppliers. Overall 34 completed questionnaires were collected and then analyzed. The results of the analysis have indicated that pull approach, standard of work, time consuming, visualization tools, the integrated project delivery methods and the quality failure in safe limits are common lean techniques which are being implemented to the local construction industry. While there are major benefits of waste reduction, client satisfaction, better communication, visual control and proper task management to build appropriate work are the key benefits of lean construction.

Purpose: The main objective of this paper is to validate the results of the Lean manufacturing application via the DMAIC concept. This study concerns a case study carried out in an automotive company which aims at improving its flows within the production workshop by pulling the physical flow and minimizing the different wastes.   Methodology/Approach: By conducting a literature review to examine the different frameworks for applying the lean method and to extract case studies related to the DMAIC approach which is missing on the selected articles, only one article that addresses this possibility. Findings: DMAIC has allowed a better structuring of the entire project, choosing the right improvement solutions with the right choice of Lean tools and several advantages that are not valid for other frameworks. This implementation shows a spectacular improvement in the production planning, the fluidity of the flow as well as an important financial gain for the company. Research Limitation/Implication: The project duration was not sufficient to apply other beneficial lean tools as the study was limited only to a single production line. Originality/Value of paper: This article demonstrates the added value of the structured DMAIC approach to lean manufacturing methodology and implementation.

Purpose Non-value adding activities or wastes in the lean term have been the major challenge of the construction industry. Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate how such wastes can be reduced so as to improve the performance of the construction industry. However, the aspect of bricks production process (BPP) has not been extensively covered. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the application of lean manufacturing concepts in BPP with a view to identifying the various wastes in the practice, the causes of these wastes and how such wastes can be reduced. Design/methodology/approach Mixed methods research design was adopted by the researchers where literature review was first conducted to establish the fundamental theories and practice standards of lean manufacturing process. Thereafter, a phenomenological study was carried out in a Shelter Clay and Brick Factory located in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria. The data obtained in the phenomenological study were analyzed through content analysis. These data served as the basis for the validation survey that subsequently followed the phenomenological study. Findings The findings in the study show that poor or inadequate supervision is the main factor responsible for wastes such as excessive drying of bricks, overheating of bricks and re-glazing of bricks in Nigerian BPP. Research limitations/implications The study focused on the various wastes in Nigerian BPP. It also focused on the various lean tools/techniques that can be adopted to reduce the wastes. Aspects such as the percentage of the wastes and their cost implication on the factory were not covered during the study and could be further investigated by prospective researchers. Practical implications The study provides knowledge on how lean thinking can be adopted to reduce wastes in BPP. Such knowledge may be beneficial to the present and prospective bricks producers. This implies that the proposed framework in the study allows producers of bricks to identify gaps in their implementation efforts, focus attention on areas that may require improvements, and access the benefits of lean approach in their factory products. The proposed framework may also be beneficial to the academics. Originality/value This paper first gain originality in the study context to propose for a lean framework that can be adopted to reduce wastes in BPP. Furthermore, the paper has not been previously published and all the information obtained from other sources are duly referenced.

Recently, a significant number of scientists' works have been devoted to the application of the lean-production principles, in particular, the introduction of lean construction. Objective construction cost estimation is a key factor in construction projects. The article discusses the problems, significant losses, low productivity in construction companies and the possibilities of their elimination due to the use of the lean-construction management concept as an innovative approach in modeling the structure of the standard time determining for construction processes implementation in order to increase the company's competitiveness. The productivity of the construction industry worldwide has been falling for the past 40 years. Companies must use appropriate methods to reduce their losses and increase productivity levels so that they can stand in the rapidly changing competitive environment of the current business environment. One of the approaches to improving the situation is the use of "lean management" in the construction industry is the result of the desire of construction business owners to optimize costs and increase labor productivity, the efficiency of organizational and technological processes, and introduce lean- production in the construction industry. A huge number of scientists and construction professionals are trying to change the traditional organizational and technological form of construction production and add value to owners, while making real profits. As a result, lean manufacturing tools have emerged that have been successfully applied to simple and complex construction projects. Ukraine is very far behind in terms of the development level of innovative processes from many countries of the world. Outdated ENiR norms, which were developed without taking into account the Lean strategy, need to be finalized. Of course, the introduction of a lean manufacturing system is a topic for the near future. Thanks to this, it is possible to significantly reduce the cost overruns on projects, as well as the time of their implementation up to 30%, or even more. Therefore, future research objective should be the development of a new modern methodology for determining the standard time, which will take into account the criteria of lean technologies, as an innovative approach in modeling the structure and sequence of all operations of construction processes.

Lean construction technique has been arisen from endeavouring and applying Japanese lean manufacturing philosophy to the construction industry. Large research is being done recently and an ongoing process to adopt lean principles to the construction industry to enhance the efficacy, amelioration of waste. The success of the lean technique is evident, but some major reports indicated that major challenges are related to the Mis-conceptualisation of lean thinking, and some case studies have ascertained that the lean technique was either applied partially or erroneously. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the lean concept, wastes in construction, features of lean project delivery, lean principles and the barriers to implementing the lean technique in the Gujarat construction industry. A compendious review of the literature had been done with the perspective of reaping pertinent data needed for the paper and to make a questionnaire. To check the reliability of data Cronbach’s alpha was used. Followed by a statistical analysis of data by Relative Important Index (RII) and ranks were given. Further analysis discovered that only nine of these barriers were determined significant, where dominant factor was Resistance to change and culture with an RII value of 0.63. The results of this study could be used to help researchers, practitioners and companies in the Gujarat construction industry to fasten their attention on the suggestive issues to the prosperous implementation of the lean concept.
