Probability Experiments with Shared Spreadsheets Probability experiments illustrate how apparently random events are ultimately governed by the laws of probability. A large number of trials are usually necessary for experimental data to converge to a theoretical prediction. Having students electronically combine their data into a shared spreadsheet provides an efficient and powerful way to collectively analyze a large amount of information. In this activity, seventh-grade students use a shared spreadsheet to collaboratively investigate what happens when they roll a pair of dice. They compare the case of two 6-sided dice with the case of a 4-sided die rolled with an 8-sided die.

Abstract A coherent study of e+e− annihilation into two (π+π−, K+K−) and three (π+π−π0, π+π−η) pseudoscalar meson production is carried out within the framework of resonance chiral theory in energy region E ≲ 2 GeV. The work of [L.Y. Dai, J. Portolés, and O. Shekhovtsova, Phys. Rev. D88 (2013) 056001] is revisited with the latest experimental data and a joint analysis of two pseudoscalar meson production. Hence, we evaluate the lowest order hadronic vacuum polarization contributions of those two and three pseudoscalar processes to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We also estimate some higher-order additions led by the same hadronic vacuum polarization. Combined with the other contributions from the standard model, the theoretical prediction differs still by (21.6 ± 7.4) × 10−10 (2.9σ) from the experimental value.

AC electrokinetics is a promising approach for sample preparation and reaction enhancement in lab-on-a-chip devices. However, relative little has been done on the electrokinetic manipulation of physiological fluids and buffers with similar properties, such as conductivity. Herein, electrokinetic manipulation of fluids with a wide range of conductivities has been studied as a function of voltage and frequency. AC electrothermal flow is determined to dominate the fluid motion when the applied frequency of the AC potential is above 100 kHz. Interestingly, experimental data deviate from theoretical prediction for fluids with high conductivities (> 1 Sm−1). The deviation can be understood by voltage modulated electrochemical reactions and should be accounted for when manipulating clinical materials with high conductivities. The study will provide useful in sights in designing lab-on-a-chip devices for manipulating clinical samples in the future.

In this work, we have formulated and solved the problem of determining the Kapitza conductance across the interface between two solids, taking into account the interface roughness. We use a modified acoustic mismatch model (AMM). The difference from the classic model is that the dispersion properties of acoustic waves are considered. A significant advantage of this model is that the theoretical prediction agrees well with experimental data over a wide temperature range: from 30K to more than 300K. Finally, a theoretical method with the statistical distribution of roughness profiles is used to determine the energy transmission coefficient across the interface.

The information explosion makes it easier to ignore information that requires social attention, and news games can make that information stand out. There is also considerable research that shows that people are more likely to remember narrative content. Virtual environments can also increase the amount of information a person can recall. If these elements are blended together, it may help people remember important information. This research aims to provide directional results for researchers interested in combining VR and narrative, enumerating the advantages and limitations of using text or non-text plot prompts in news games. It also provides hints for the use of virtual environments as learning platforms in news games. The research method is to first derive a theoretical derivation, then create a sample of news games, and then compare the experimental data of the sample to prove the theory. The research compares the survey data of a VR game that presents a story in non-text format (Group VR), a game that presents the story in non-text format (Group NVR), a VR game that presents the story in text (Group VRIT), and a game that presents the story in text (Group NVRIT) will be compared and analyzed. This paper describes the experiment. The results of the experiment show that among the four groups, the means that can make subjects remember the most information is a VR news game with a storyline. And there is a positive correlation between subjects' experience and confidence in recognizing memories, and empathy is positively correlated with the correctness of memories. In addition, the effects of "VR," "experience," and "presenting a story from text or video" on the percentage of correct answers differed depending on the type of question.

A statistical mechanical model was used to calculate the curvature of the 5 chemically synthesized DNAs which contain repeats sequences ( CCTG )n · ( CAGG )n and ( ATTCT )n · ( AGAAT )n associated with human diseases. 8% polyacrylamide gel analyses were also performed for these 5 DNAs. The results indicate the curvature of the sequences CCTG/bend and ATTCT/bend are larger than that of the sequences CCTG/straight and ATTCT/straight. The curvature of straight/bend is larger than that of CCTG/straight and ATTCT/straight, and smaller than that of CCTG/bend and ATTCT/bend. There exists good consistent between theoretical prediction and experimental data.

Using ab initio calculations, we have studied the structural and elastic properties of M 2 InC , with M = Sc , Ti , V , Zr , Nb , Hf and Ta . Geometrical optimization of the unit cell is in agreement with the available experimental data. We have observed a quadratic dependence of the lattice parameters versus the applied pressure. The elastic constants are calculated using the static finite strain technique. We derived the bulk and shear moduli, Young's moduli and Poisson's ratio for ideal polycrystalline M 2 InC aggregates. We estimated the Debye temperature of M 2 InC from the average sound velocity. This is the first quantitative theoretical prediction of the elastic properties of Sc 2 InC , Ti 2 InC , V 2 InC , Zr 2 InC , Nb 2 InC , Hf 2 InC and Ta 2 InC compounds, and it still awaits experimental confirmation.
