Automated monitoring systems are now the standard on most large vessels; however, few are equipped with diagnostic systems. This paper presents new developments in the area of fault diagnosis based on intelligent software agents. The research objective was to design an agent capable of continuous real-time machine learning by using an artificial neural network known as the cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC). An engine simulator that can model both normal and faulty engine operations was used to develop the learning system controller in a flexible and cost-efficient manner. This paper provides a description of the selected CMAC, a brief overview of the real-time engine simulator and its integration with the learning system as well as a few results.

Because a serious fault would result in a reduced amount of electricity supply in a power plant, the real-time fault diagnosis system is extremely important for a steam turbine generator set. A novel real-time intelligent fault diagnosis system is proposed by using a fuzzy cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) neural network to detect and identify the faults and failures of critical components. A framework of the fault diagnosis system is described. The model of a novel fault diagnosis system by using a fuzzy CMAC is built and analysed in detail step by step. A case of the diagnosis including three faults is simulated with a fuzzy CMAC. The results show that the real-time fault diagnostic system is of high accuracy, quick convergence, and high noise rejection. Moreover, the model is verified by two examples. It is found that this model is feasible. Finally, the effects of the generalization parameter and address number in fault diagnosis are discussed.

This paper presents a marine diesel engine simulation code designed for real-time performance. The main novelty is that the various equations are derived from the laws of thermodynamics, thus guaranteeing qualitatively accurate predictions and allowing for easy use with any type of engine. The code is based on the "filling and emptying" method with various simplifications to achieve real-time performance. A number of failure models were added to interface the code with a propulsion training application. This was done in order to educate crews on failure detection and the management of emergencies.

AbstractCOVID-19 global cases have climbed to more than 33 million, with over a million total deaths, as of September, 2020. Real-time massive SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequencing is key to tracking chains of transmission and estimating the origin of disease outbreaks. Yet no methods have simultaneously achieved high precision, simple workflow, and low cost. We developed a high-precision, cost-efficient SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequencing platform for COVID-19 genomic surveillance, CorvGenSurv (Coronavirus Genomic Surveillance). CorvGenSurv directly amplified viral RNA from COVID-19 patients’ Nasopharyngeal/Oropharyngeal (NP/OP) swab specimens and sequenced the SARS-CoV-2 whole genome in three segments by long-read, high-throughput sequencing. Sequencing of the whole genome in three segments significantly reduced sequencing data waste, thereby preventing dropouts in genome coverage. We validated the precision of our pipeline by both control genomic RNA sequencing and Sanger sequencing. We produced near full-length whole genome sequences from individuals who were COVID-19 test positive during April to June 2020 in Los Angeles County, California, USA. These sequences were highly diverse in the G clade with nine novel amino acid mutations including NSP12-M755I and ORF8-V117F. With its readily adaptable design, CorvGenSurv grants wide access to genomic surveillance, permitting immediate public health response to sudden threats.

In order to meet requirements of increasingly high-speed, large and intelligent mechanical equipments on fault diagnosis, the Internet-based reconfigurable mechanical system fault diagnosis program was presented. The overall structure and networking schema of distance mechanical fault diagnosis system were analyzed, and the distance fault diagnosis network model based on J2EE framework was also described. The structural model and reconfigurable manner of the reconfigurable distance diagnosis system was provided, which used CORBA component technology to achieve reconfiguration. The detail steps of system that take some type of diesel engine as diagnosis object was described, and the intelligent diagnosing methods were also researched. The Internet-based fault diagnosis technology effectively improves the efficiency and accuracy of diagnostic systems.

Although research on various diamond polishing techniques has been carried for years, some issues still need to be examined in order to facilitate application on large areas in a cost-efficient manner. A compositive technique for machining efficiently thick diamond films prepared by DC plasma arc jet is reported in the present paper. A two-stage polishing was applied on thick polycrystalline diamond films, by employing first electro-discharge machining (EDM) for rough polishing and subsequently mechanical polishing for finishing operations. Experimental results obtained clearly indicate the applicability of the proposed two-stage technique for fabricating transparent diamond films that can be used for the production of X-ray windows. Appropriate etching with EDM is an effective pretreatment method for enhancing the efficiency of rough polishing process in mechanical polishing of thick diamond film. The machined surfaces of diamond films are studied by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Raman Scattering Spectroscopy (Raman).

This study employed a cerebellar model articulation controller (CMAC) neural network to conduct fault diagnoses on photovoltaic power generation systems. We composed a module array using 9 series and 2 parallel connections of SHARP NT-R5E3E 175 W photovoltaic modules. In addition, we used data that were outputted under various fault conditions as the training samples for the CMAC and used this model to conduct the module array fault diagnosis after completing the training. The results of the training process and simulations indicate that the method proposed in this study requires fewer number of training times compared to other methods. In addition to significantly increasing the accuracy rate of the fault diagnosis, this model features a short training duration because the training process only tunes the weights of the exited memory addresses. Therefore, the fault diagnosis is rapid, and the detection tolerance of the diagnosis system is enhanced.

The paper describes the design process for a controlled pulse turbocharging system (CPT) on a 5 cylinder 4-stroke marine engine and highlights the potential for improved engine performance as well as reduced smoke emissions under steady state and transient operating conditions, as offered by the following technologies: • controlled pulse turbocharging, • high pressure air injection onto the compressor impeller as well as into the air receiver, and • an electronic engine control system, including a hydraulic powered electric actuator. Calibrated engine simulation computer models based on the results of tests performed on the engine in its baseline configuration were used to design the CPT components. Various engine tests with CPT under steady state and transient operating conditions show the engine optimization process and how the above-mentioned technologies benefit engine behavior in both generator and propeller law operation.
