The unexpected transformation from traditional face-to-face classes to Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode, due to the implementation of Movement Control Order (MCO) caused by COVID-19 pandemic, has deeply affect the basic Mandarin learners in higher education institutes. After studying Mandarin level 1 through face-to-face classes for only three weeks, students were forced to adjust and adapt to ODL mode within a short amount of time. This situation would inevitably affect their learning quality and progress during the MCO period. Hence, a study on the students’ perception and acceptance towards ODL under this circumstance is crucial as a pilot test, to establish a better understanding on the possibility of ODL’s sustainability as a necessary component in learning Mandarin henceforward. Such study will also help to apprehend and further satisfy students’ requirement on studying Mandarin through ODL, so that it will become an ideal complement, or even a more preferred main option compared to the conventional teaching activities.

Novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) was first detected in Wuhan, China, soon its rapid escalation in global and become global spread of infection including Malaysia. The principal cases in Malaysia were distinguished on 25th January 2020. The number of cases keeps on ascending since March 2020 until Malaysia has the highest number of cases in Southeast Asia. Therefore, to respond and control the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, the 2020 Movement Control Order (MCO) is implemented. The MCO actualizes a movement of reasonable steps to control advance flare-ups of COVID-19 within the country, counting closing down all organization and private premises aside from those related with "fundamental administrations" and several parts with government permission, and travel disallowances on all outsiders entering Malaysia and on Malaysians taking off the country. Correspondingly, this MCO has brought about the decrease of air contamination as the number of engine vehicles and the activity of businesses is suspended. This study aims to determine the concentrations of particulate matter 2.5 at the selected monitoring stations in UTHM and to correlate environmental factor which is wind speed and wind direction with the Particulate Matter 2.5. This study uses PM2.5 fixations to explain the air pollution before to MCO, stages I, II, III, and IV, where the contingent MCO is actualized. Such outcomes relate to the air contamination list as it was discovered that the PM2.5 fixations showed a high decrease of up to -74 μg/m3 during Phase IV MCO.

Distance learning provides a wide opportunity for learners to access postgraduate qualifications. With the establishment of such open and distance learning (ODL) institutions like open universities and e-learning programs by higher learning institutions around the world, more learners are getting into postgraduate degree programs. In the United Kingdom, for example, a group of reputable institutions have established the UKeU (UK e-Universities). This article looks at the types of programs offered (master’s and doctorate) and their characteristics in contrast to traditional on-campus study. We will look into the challenges and issues faced by distance learning postgraduate-degree providers, as well as those faced by the learners. Among the issues are accreditation and recognition, curriculum and assessment, instructional methods, factors influencing learners’ choice of postgraduate programs, and institutional support for learners. Finally, we discuss the effects of postgraduate distance learning programs in the education landscape as a whole.

The Covid-19 pandemic had an immense effect on teaching and learning during 2020. The fast shift to online examinations in reaction to the pandemic and subsequent lockdown underlines the significance of motivationally enriched and emotionally supportive instruction during this stressful time. It cannot be assumed that all students have the same access to online assets or to internet-equipped devices such as laptops or tablets. Not all students coped well, as an analysis of student remarks indicated in a qualitative study. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to determine what type of emotions Postgraduate Certificate in Education students experienced during their first fully online examination in order to create motivating and supportive learning environments. A total of 10 of these students from an open and distance learning university were purposefully selected to complete 14 questions related to their learning needs and, in particular, emotional challenges during the lockdown. Theoretical underpinnings include, inter alia, five motivational design principles. The results indicated that all 10 students had access to mobile phones and seven to laptops to participate in online academic activities. The emotions experienced most by the students varied from anxiousness to restlessness. The findings are discussed with reference to supporting students’ motivation and emotions in university courses during these stressful times.

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the landscape of the education domain. It affects the way we teach, the way we learn, and imposes novel obstacles in the way institutions of higher learning conventionally manage themselves. While all students in higher learning institutions would certainly feel the impact, there is a need to focus on the experience of international students. In an effort to combat the pandemic, Malaysia has issued a directive for Movement Control Order (MCO), starting 18 March 2020. Amongst others, this directive directly affected all universities in the country. This study aims to explore the impact of COVID-19 amongst the international students in a higher education institution in Sarawak, Malaysia. Data was gathered via an online questionnaire adapted from the QS Survey Report 2020 on COVID-19. Our findings revealed that while most of the international students perceived their studies to be affected, most planned to continue with the programs that they were currently enrolled in. The students expressed deep concerns about the impact of the pandemic on their exams and classes and preferred reassurance in terms of updates on information related to academic matters.

The present study examines the impacts of cooperative learning on the motivation for 72 second-year Vietnamese higher education students in the Research Methods in Education over the nine-week course. Seventy-two students were allocated into two smaller groups of 36 students. The same lecturer was assigned to teach these two groups of students. Cooperative learning was applied for the experimental group, while lecture-based teaching was utilized in the control group for the whole course. The study outcome demonstrated significant higher learning motivation in the experimental group than that in the control group. Implications for innovation in teaching methods and further research are suggested to popularize more cooperative learning for better learning outcomes.
