Peter the Wild Boy was famous in his day as a feral child who provided inspiration and example for philosophical debates about nature and nurture, and the essential qualities of humanity. Openstorytellers, a performance company whose members have intellectual and learning disabilities, has developed a performance and workshop based on his story. In this chapter the members of Openstorytellers reflect on the implications of the ways Peter is represented in literature and popular culture, and draw important connections between his life and their own.

This discussion presents the rationale for using postneonatal mortality as a proxy health status measure, briefly reviews some recent epidemiologic observations and international comparisons related to postneonatal mortality, focuses on implications of postneonatal mortality as a performance indicator of the child health care delivery system, especially for vulnerable infants, and concludes with some thoughts about policy issues concerning health care for children. A first birthday has been heralded as one of life's most celebrated and significant anniversaries. This is not only a personal moment marking a milestone along life's continuum, it is also a sentinel measure or indicator of the health status of the children living in a particular society and indeed of the society itself. We have characterized this qualitative marker as an infant mortality rate. We have also differentiated two age periods during the first year of life, the first 28 days and the 11 months remaining until 1 year of age, yielding neonatal and postneonatal mortality rates. Traditionally, these two rates have been considered to be reflective of nature and nurture, or endogenous and exogenous events; neonatal mortality is associated more closely with biologic processes in utero and at delivery, whereas postneonatal mortality is influenced more by parenting or caring for the infant directly, and consequently more amenable to the effects of proper interventions. Our accumulated knowledge clearly indicates, however, that both nature and nurture affect the well-being of the infant. Moreover, the distinction between neonatal mortality and postneonatal mortality based solely on "age-at-death" may be less useful today; advances in life-saving perinatal technology often extend survival beyond the first 28 days of life but not beyond the first birthday.

Fotografia. Nêgo. Fugido.Images and performances of children in the Nêgo Fugido in Acupe / BAAbstractIn Acupe/ Bahia, children participate in the popular culture manifestation called Nêgo Fugido. Through ethnographic method and photography, I reflect on cultural performance as intense sensorial expression of everyday experiences and the agency of children in the popular manifestation and in front of the camera.  Therefore I explore the images and the imaginary of these children, bringing to the debate issues about the shared construction of their images and their imaginary about themselves, and about the world, from the racial perspective. In this paper it is shown the results of the study of the concepts of performance (Schechner, 2006), mimesis and decolonization of the imaginary (Taussig,  1993),  cultural  trauma  (Eyerman,  2004),  among  others.  The investigation attests that there is a sensorial knowledge being built together with the constitution of these black children in the Recôncavo Baiano. They manifest this knowledge  of  the  world  performatically  in  the  Nêgo  Fugido  and  also  in  the ethnographic encounter day by day.Key words: Performance. Children. Photography. Nêgo. Word prompt programs are computer software programs or program features that are used in addition to basic word processing. These programs provide word lists from which a user selects a desired word and inserts it into a line of text. This software is used to support individuals with severe speech, physical, and learning disabilities. This tutorial describes the features of a variety of word prompt programs and reviews the current literature on the use of these programs by people with oral and written language needs. In addition, a matrix that identifies the features contained in eight sample word prompt programs is provided. The descriptions of features and the matrix are designed to assist speech-language pathologists and teachers in evaluating and selecting word prompt programs to support their clients' oral and written communication.
