The subject of this article is life and research activity of the Soviet geologist, paleontologist, Doctor of Geology and Mineralogy, explorer of the European North-East of Russia, discoverer of the Pechora coal basin – Alexander Chernov (1877-1963). The object of this research is the Russian historiography on his scientific biography. The goal a consists in the analysis of biographical essays, writings, newspaper notes about A. A. Chernov, available information on his scientific biography, as well as insufficiently studied topics. It is determined that the historiography of works dedicated to A. A. Chernov is extensive, and describes life path of the scholar, his academicc, pedagogical, and social activities. The author indicates Chernov’s role in training geology scholars in the process of institutionalization of science in the North, namely the Institute of Geology of Komi Scientific Center of Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, organization of exploration works in the European North-East of Russia. His remarkable contribution to geological exploration of the territories of Russian North along with the discovery of Pechora coal basin is described. It is revealed that the history of establishment and development of Chernov’s scientific school, formed on the premises of Guerrier Courses in Moscow and in the Komi Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union remains insufficiently studied.

Scientific-research center «Arktika» far-eastern branch of the Russian academy of sciences, 685000, Magadan, Russia Young male residents ofMagadan region and Chukotsky Autonomous District aged 17-21, all are representatives of Russia’s northeast ethnic peoples were examined in comparison with Caucasoid subjects born in the north in the p>-2 generation to study the blood lipid and glucose values as well as the dietary structure. In order to ascertain the subjects ’ lipid and carbohydrate basic values, the CardioChek PA biochemical express-analyzer (USA) was used during the study of the capillary blood samples taken from the examinees on empty stomach, 10-12 hours after the last meal. Besides, the program set of “ASPON-nutrition” was used to analyze the subjects ’ daily diets for assessing their dietary structures and nutrition facts. All the examined subjects demonstrated the similar changes in lipid-carbohydrate profile resulted in low fat metabolism and high glucose close to the upper limit of physiological norm. Reliable ethnic and region-related peculiarities in the studied metabolic parameters were found. Of note, that Aboriginal subjects were the highest in the blood glucose. They showed higher values ofLPHD and lower values ofLPLD compared to those of Caucasoid subjects. Significant nutrition irrationalities such as imbalance in macronutrients and energetic deficiency were found. The observed diets contain excess carbohydrates and insufficient protein and fat saturation at lowered daily energetic value for the given age cohort.

The cocksfoot grass is a valuable early ripe forage crop with good yield and excellent feed quality. It is used to create hayfields and pastures and is a component of grasslands of meadows of almost all regions of the Komi Republic. However, the expansion of varieties adapted to the soil and climate of the North needs this valuable crop. For this purpose from 2015 to 2018 there was the research of the varieties and wild populations of the cocksfoot grass of the world collection for further use in the creation of new adaptive varieties. The experiment took place in 2015 at the experimental field of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Komi Scientific Center, the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Syktyvkar). The soil of the plot is sod-podzol, medium loamy in granulometric composition. The collection of nursery-garden included 10 samples of the cocksfoot grass of various ecological and geographical origin. As a standard, the Neva variety was taken. The experiments were carried out using seedlings according to the scheme 80x50 cm, the plot area was 10 m2, four repetition. Varietal samples were evaluated by winter hardness, indicators of productivity of green mass and seeds. Meteorological conditions during the years of research allowed us to evaluate the winter hardness of the cocksfoot grass samples. As a result of evaluating 10 samples, wild-growing samples from the Komi Republic (42733, 43024, 45945) and Norway (41826) were distinguished for a number of economically valuable traits, characterized by high winter hardness, even germination and green mass productivity on average for 3 years - 21.523.7 t/ha, dry weight - 4.7-5.1 t/ha and seeds - 354-576 kg / ha. These samples provide valuable starting material for further breeding work.

In 2024, the Russian Academy of Sciences will celebrate its three hundredth anniversary. In this regard, there is a relevant need to comprehend the contribution of Soviet scientists to reconstruction of the country’s economy after the Great Patriotic War. In 2021, Russian University of Transport where Academician V. N. Obraztsov once worked, celebrates the 125th anniversary. The scientific conceptualisation of the ways to develop the North of the country is of great importance for the development of the transport system of Russia. Hence, those factors determine the topicality of the objective of the article to study the projects for development of transport in the European North of the USSR put forward by Academician V. N. Obraztsov in the post-war period.To attain this objective, the system-structural and historicalcomparative methods were used. For the first time the activity of V. N. Obraztsov, as of an analyst and expert in the field of development of post-war railway transport, is analysed. It is concluded that having the talent of a major leader of transport projects, Obraztsov put forward research tasks adequate to the requirements of the time for reconstruction of the country’s economy after the war. Among these tasks, he considered modernisation and development of transport. In the projects of 1945, Obraztsov laid the foundations for long-term planning of railway, road, river, and air transport in the European North of the USSR for several decades ahead. The volume of the proposed construction was enormous. Even though the planned large-scale design of the transport infrastructure was not entirely feasible for implementation in a short time due to limited forces and resources of the country, it catches imagination with farreaching prospects for development of the European North and the Arctic. Academician Obraztsov’s programs for development of the north, being of great scientific value, are especially relevant in 21st century.

The objects of research are representatives of the genus Malus growing in the Kuban zone of the North Caucasus region. The purpose of the research is the breeding improvement of the of apple southern assortment on the basis of the development of the scientific direction “Introduction, variety study and breeding of pome crops in the North Caucasus and the creation of promising domestic varieties with improved adaptability and quality. The history of the creation and development of this scientific direction of the scientific school “Southern Horticulture” in the North Caucasus, the founder of which was Lev M. Sergeev (1886-1980. Under his leadership, the first breeding programs for seed crops (apple, pear, quince) for the North Caucasus region were developed, the priority of which was to improve the characteristics of productivity and quality characteristics of fruits; with his active participation, a network of gossortuchastok was organized in the North Caucasus and by the end of 1947 a zoned assortment of the main fruit crops of the south of Russia was formed. At present, the development of the above-mentioned scientific direction has been continued in the works of L. M. Sergeev, original studies of which are based on the use of a complex of classical and improved methods for creating and evaluating breeding material, modern achievements in molecular genetics, biochemistry, cytology, and are aimed at creating domestic varieties with improved productivity and quality of fruits, with high resistance to abiostressors and the main fungal pathogens of the North Caucasus. In recent years, the gene pool of the apple tree has been significantly updated, numbering 436 specimens of various ecological and geographical origin and ploidy, most of which are from Russia (49 %), Western European countries (18 %), and the USA (17 %). Over the years of research, scientists from North Caucasian Federal Scientific Center of Horticulture, Viticulture, Wine-making have created and submitted for State variety testing 81 new apple varieties, including 25 varieties created in collaboration with scientists from All- Russian Research Institute for Fruit Crops Breeding, I. V. Michurin Federal Research Center and others. 36 apple varieties obtained on the basis of the use of spontaneous and induced mutagenesis, an improved method of polyploidy, directed, repeated and geographically distant hybridization were included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements approved for use in the North Caucasus region.

Abstract In many oil and gas provinces not only in Russia, but throughout the world, carbonate strata make up a significant portion of the sedimentary cover, and large accumulations of hydrocarbons are associated with them. However, the purposeful study of them as reservoirs for hydrocarbons in our country practically began only in the post-war years. In the special petrography laboratory carbonate rocks composing various stratigraphic complexes of almost all oil and gas provinces of the Soviet Union were studied, and in particular, Paleozoic carbonate strata of the Timan-Pechora province, Ural-Volga region, Belarus, Kazakhstan, ancient Riphean-Cambrian formations of Yakutia and relatively young strata of the Late Cretaceous of the northeastern Ciscaucasia. Carbonates are widespread sedimentary rocks. A very significant part of them was formed in the conditions of vast shallow-water marine epicontinental basins. A large number of works are devoted to the study of such deposits. However, issues related to the conditions of formation of carbonate sediments and their postsedimentary changes cannot be considered resolved, as well as the classification of the rocks themselves. The analyzed field is the Osvanyurskoye one. It was discovered in 2007. The field is located in the north-east of the European part of the Russian Federation, 2 km from Usinsk in the Komi Republic. The field is a part of the Timano-Pechora oil and gas province and it is a mature field (fig. 1). The objective was a 2.5m thick layer of the Serpukhov horizon.

Here we present the summarized results of 40 years detailed researches of the Neopleistocene deposits of different genetic types in the north-east of European Russia. We studied the spore-pollen spectra of interglacial Quaternary sediments from boreholes and river sections, the material composition of tills and microtheriofauna from periglacial sediments. This allowed us to carry out stratigraphic division of the Neopleistocene and Holocene sections and recreate the climatic conditions for formation of interglacial deposits. Six sedimentary cycles have been determined in the Quaternary section of the research territory. It is concluded that now there is a trend towards climate cooling in the European north-east of Russia. The book will find welcome researchers dealing with various problems of geology and palaegeography of the Neopleistocene and Holocene.

A pioneering attempt in historiography presents a scientific analysis of socio-humanitarian research carried out by employees of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Arctic regions of Yakutia during 1980-1991. Archival materials identified by the author, as well as data from the scientific literature were used for the preparation of the article. The work carried out allowed us to present a characteristic of the development by scientists of a complex of sociocultural, economic, archaeological, historical and anthropological, linguistic and folklore issues. In this regard, the geography of the research is shown, their key actors and main directions are identified. At the same time, an analysis of the most important provisions developed by the participants of the considered research initiatives was carried out. It was established that in the mentioned period, on the one hand, the research was continued, which had been successfully carried out earlier in the Polar Yakutia, and on the other hand, new research trends were making their way. Their stipulation is proved by the development of scientific knowledge and the changing socio-political situation in the Soviet Union. It is concluded that, as a result, interdisciplinary research has been developed, including the widespread use of the natural science arsenal, as well as a clear shift in the paradigm regarding the assessment of Soviet transformations for the destiny of the indigenous peoples of the North.
