This paper brings up the history of comparative literature from its beginning to the postcolonial era, discussing the challenges and controversies that have shaped the history of the discipline and practice. Drawing mainly upon Edward Said’s thought, but also other prominent theorists, the paper sketches the evolution of the concept of comparative literature on the one hand, and on the other hand, it shows through some recent examples of transnational and transcultural questions, how difficult it is in the contemporary context of Globalization to preserve the nation as a space and concept of reference for the writing of the history of literature, due to the very fact of the transformation of the nation and its contours in recent decades. It is also about showing that despite the circulation of worlds and the challenge of the nation’s rigid borders by the process of migration among others, the nation is not yet disqualified as a framework and substructure for literary production. It further discusses the relationship between literature and nation in the contemporary context as well as the issues of transnationality and world literariness, using two examples from France and Nigeria.

This article examines the problem of overcoming nihilism in Heidegger’s dialogue with Jünger. It is suggested that nihilism is manifested in various forms and is the deep logic of the whole history of European civilization. One of the main aims of this paper is to outline the relationship of nihilism and Nothing in Heidegger’s dispute with Jünger, viewing how Heidegger distinguishes his approach from Jünger’s point of view. Heidegger, on the one hand, treats nihilism as consummation of the Western metaphysical tradition, on the other hand, identifies Nothing itself as the shadow of Being, which cannot be overcome in the traditional dialectical thinking manner.

The collective volume Early Phenomenology in Central and Eastern Europe: Main Figures, Ideas, and Problems, edited by Witold Płotka and Patrick Eldridge, enriches the ongoing and highly topical research of the history of phenomenology with the thematization of a specific period and localization of phenomenology. The authors of eleven chapters explore the emergence of phenomenology in local traditions outside the Germanophone area, its appropriation and development, describing the unique forms it acquired in individual environments. The book clarifies the characteristics of the early wave of phenomenology and provides a list of Central and Eastern European phenomenologists who participated in it. On the one hand, the volume is a contribution to historiography, enriching the study of the history of phenomenology thematically and thus contributing to the development of phenomenology itself; on the other hand, it introduces its own set of philosophical problems. These concern methodology and the issue of the Central and Eastern European identity, which is examined through the prism of the development of local traditions of phenomenology. When exploring the latter it is useful to introduce the concept of the marginocentric. This concept, which originated in comparative literature, facilitates an understanding of the unique cultural configuration of a concrete tradition in its communication with internal and external environments.

Thanatological motifs and paradigms of artistryon materials of Russian literatureThe article is devoted to interaction of thanatological motifs and paradigms of artistry pre-reflective traditionalism, reflective traditionalism, aesthetic creativism, reflective communicativism and others as ways of representation of reality in different periods. On the one hand, paradigms and “subparadigms” of artistry are discursive principles, directed in the history of literature not only to the development of thanatosemantics and thanatopoetics, but also to their limitation. On the other hand, text elements representing attitude toward death determine some key meaningful and formal attributes of these paradigms.Motywy tanatologiczne i paradygmaty artyzmuna materiale literatury rosyjskiejArtykuł poświęcony jest interakcji motywów tanatologicznych i paradygmatów artyzmu przed-refleksyjnego tradycjonalizmu, refleksyjnego tradycjonalizmu, estetycznego kreatywizmu, refleksyjnego komunikatywizmu i innych jako sposobu reprezentacji rzeczywistości w różnych epokach. Z jednej strony, paradygmaty oraz subparadygmaty artyzmu są dyskursywnymi zasadami, w historii literatury skierowanymi nie tylko na rozwój semantyki i poetyki Tanatosa, lecz także na ich ograniczenie. Z drugiej strony, elementy tekstowe przedstawiające stosunek do śmierci określają niektóre znaczeniowo kluczowe i formalne właściwości tych paradygmatów.

AbstractSplit into two articles, the Empirical Paper Series on Secession and Constitutionalism explores the relationship between constitutionalism and secession. The first paper of this series examined the relationship between, on the one hand, the constitutional prohibition and legalisation of secession – ie indivisibility and secession clauses – and, on the other hand, the prevalence of secessionist movements. This second article addresses the very heart of the doctrinal debate between the Indivisibilist and Secessionist schools, namely the relationship between a constitution’s framework towards secession and the actual occurrence of secession.Between 1900 and 2018, 24 subnational units seceded from a total of 16 central states. Of these 24 cases of secession, 25 % occurred in central states where secession was prohibited, 13 % in states whose constitution was silent on the issue, and 63 % in states whose constitution contained a right to secession, which indicates a very strong statistical relationship between secession clauses and the actual occurrence of secession.Yet, a closer look into the history of these provisions suggests that the causal relationship between secession clauses and secession itself – if any – goes in a direction opposite to what one would assume. Indeed, not a single one of the 13 secession clauses identified in this paper series ever gave rise to a pro-independence movement. In the vast majority of cases, it is actually the pre-existence of secessionist groups that forced the constitutionalising of a right to secession, either downstream, to pacify a violent secessionist conflict, or upstream, to accommodate a region that set the constitutionalising of such a right as a precondition of its joining a new country that would otherwise not have existed in the first place. Liechtenstein is the only recorded example of a state that constitutionalised a right to secede without being faced with pre-existing secessionist tensions, and none has arisen since secession became legal in Liechtenstein.

AbstractThis article proposes to narrow the gap between the space of reasons and the space of causes. By articulating the standard phenomenology of reasons and causes, we investigate the cases in which the clear-cut divide between reasons and causes starts to break down. Thus, substituting the simple picture of the relationship between the space of reasons and the space of causes with an inverted and complex one, in which reasons can have a causal-like phenomenology and causes can have a reason-like phenomenology. This is attained by focusing on “swift reasoned actions” on the one hand, and on “causal noisy brain mechanisms” on the other hand. In the final part of the article, I show how an analogous move, that of narrowing the gap between one’s normative framework and the space of reasons, can be seen as an extension of narrowing the gap between the space of causes and the space of reasons.

<p>「高文舉故事」始自形成,便以多元樣貌流播於各地聲腔,依據本文所較析的四個版本,彼此間存在著複雜關係,或有獨立發展者,如南管戲《高文舉》,或有屬古本系統者,如《水雲亭還魂記》,或有保留南戲原貌者莆仙戲《高文舉》,乃至於集大成者「文林閣本」《高文舉珍珠記》。南戲《高文舉》已亡佚,其中以《高文舉珍珠記》之影響最為深遠。「高文舉故事」主要情節有三:「珍珠米糷」、「還魂訴冤」、「包拯斷案」。在「文林閣本」與「莆仙本」皆有「珍珠米糷」、「龍圖斷案」,而「還魂本」有「玉真還魂」、「龍圖斷案」,至於「南管本」則一概具無,可知「南管本」在高文舉故事流變過程中之獨特性。本文主要針對各版本間之「關目情節」、「曲文賓白」等詳實比勘,剖析「高文舉」在不同聲腔劇種間之承繼與創新,並試圖重構各地聲腔在「高文舉」演化過程中之地位與價值。</p> <p>&nbsp;</p><p>Gao Wen Jyu of southern opera has been disappeared and present versions include Zhen Zhu Ji (Yi Yang tune), Gao Wen Jyu of Southern Pipes (Quan tune), Gao Wen Jyu of Pu Xian (Hsin Hua tune) and Revival After Death of Shui Yun Pavilion (Qing Yang tune). Among others, Zhen Zhu Ji is the most influential one. The plots such as &ldquo;Window Meeting&rdquo; and &ldquo;Zhen Zhu Mi Lan&rdquo; are not only the selected Zhe Zi operas for the later generations, but also the adapted texts of local operas. Main plots of &ldquo;story of Gao Wen Jyu&rdquo; are below: &ldquo;Zhen Zhu Mi Lan&rdquo;, &ldquo;Revival After Death to Appeal for Justice&rdquo; and &ldquo;Master Pao&rsquo;s Judgment&rdquo;. Zhen Zhu Ji and &ldquo;version of Pu Xian&rdquo; include &ldquo;Zhen Zhu Mi Lan&rdquo; and &ldquo;Master Pag&rsquo;s Judgment&rdquo;. &ldquo;Version of revival after death&rdquo; includes &ldquo;Revival After Death of Yu Chen&rdquo; and &ldquo;Master Pao&rsquo;s Judgment&rdquo;. &ldquo;Version of Southern Pipes&rdquo; does not include the above. Hence, it shows the uniqueness of &ldquo;version of Southern Pipes&rdquo; in the evolution of &ldquo;story of Gao Wen Jyu&rdquo;. Varieties of plots result in the richness of &ldquo;story of Gao Wen Jyu&rdquo;. The process of spread reveals flexibility and regionality of local common systematic tunes and varieties of operas. </p> <p> This study will treat four versions of Gao Wen Jyu as the subjects to significantly compare and analyze the original stories and difference and similarity of related work. First, it explores present versions to recognize the evolution of the story &ldquo;Gao Wen Jyu&rdquo;; secondly, it precisely compares &ldquo;plots&rdquo; and &ldquo;singing and talking&rdquo; of the versions to analyze the inheritance and innovation of &ldquo;story of Gao Wen Jyu&rdquo; in different common systematic tunes and varieties of Chinese operas. It, on the one hand, clarifies the relationship and origin of different versions of &ldquo;Gao Wen Jyu&rdquo; and, on the other hand, probes into cultural characteristics of &ldquo;time&rdquo; and &ldquo;region&rdquo; of operas; finally, it attmpets to reconstruct the positions and values of common systematic tunes in different regions in the evolution process of &ldquo;Gao Wen Jyu&rdquo;. </p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

This article examines the nature and frequency of comments about Jews and Judaism in sermons delivered by Confessing Church pastors in the Nazi dictatorship.  The approach of most historians has focused on the history of antisemitism in the German Protestant tradition—in the works, pronouncements, and policies of the German churches and its leading figures.  Yet historians have left unexamined the most elemental task of the pastor—that is, preaching from the pulpit to the German people.  What would the average German congregant have heard from his pastor about the Jews and Judaism on any given Sunday?  I searched German archives, libraries, and used book stores, and analyzed 910 sermon manuscripts that were produced and disseminated in the Nazi regime.  I argue that these sermons provide mixed messages about Jews and Judaism.  While on the one hand, the sermons express admiration for Judaism as a foundation for Christianity, an insistence on the usage of the Hebrew Bible in the German churches, and the conviction that the Jews are spiritual cousins of Christians.  On the other hand, the sermons express religious prejudice in the form of anti-Judaic tropes that corroborated the Nazi ideology that portrayed Jews and Judaism as inferior: for instance, that Judaism is an antiquated religion of works rather than grace; that the Jews killed Christ and have been punished throughout history as a consequence.  Furthermore, I demonstrate that Confessing Church pastors commonly expressed anti-Judaic statements in the process of criticizing the Nazi regime, its leadership, and its policies.

Is friendship still possible under nihilistic conditions? Kant and Nietzsche are important stages in the history of the idealization of friendship, which leads inevitably to the problem of nihilism. Nietzsche himself claims on the one hand that only something like friendship can save us in our nihilistic condition, but on the other hand that precisely friendship has been unmasked and become impossible by these very conditions. It seems we are struck in the nihilistic paradox of not being allowed to believe in the possibility of what we cannot do without. Literary imagination since the 19th century seems to make us even more skeptical. Maybe Beckett provides an illustration of a way out that fits well to Nietzsche's claim that only "the most moderate, those who do not require any extreme articles of faith" will be able to cope with nihilism.

This article sheds new light on the political history of legal-constitutional developments in Palestine in the fourteen years following the Oslo Accord. It examines the relationship between the unfolding social, political, and economic context in which they arose, on the one hand, and PA law-making and legal praxis, on the other. Focusing on the evolution of the Palestinian Basic Law and constitutional regime, the author argues that the “Palestinian constitutional process” was a major “battlefield” for the actors of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Thus, changes in the actors' political strategies at various junctures were mirrored in legal-constitutional forms, specifically in the political structure of the PA. In that sense, the constitutional order can be understood as a sort of “metaphoric representation” of Palestinian politics, reflecting, among other things, the colonial nature of the Palestinian context that the Oslo process only rearticulated. This perspective is also essential for understanding the evolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict after Oslo.

В статье анализируются особенности восприятия лесного пространства башкирами. На основе языковых, фольклорных материалов сделана попытка раскрыть различные аспекты взаимоотношений лес - человек, образ леса в картине мира башкир. Как и в большинстве традиционных культур, в целом мифологический образ леса носит отрицательный характер. В фольклоре он часто описывается как тёмный, мрачный, неизвестный, таящий опасности, противопоставляясь обжитому и освоенному пространству селений. Лесной пандемониум также представлен в основном отрицательными персонажами. В целом образ леса в традиционной картине мира башкир предстаёт довольно неоднозначным. С одной стороны - это категория, связанная с потусторонним миром, неизведанная, «чужая» территория. С другой - лес издавна являлся источником различных благ - в виде строительного материала, пушнины, различных продуктов питания, укрывал от врагов. The article analyzes the features of Bashkirs' perception of the forest space. On the basis of the materials of the epos, folklore, folk ideas, an attempt was made to reveal the various aspects of the relationship between forest and man, the image of the forest in Bashkirs' world view. As in most traditional cultures, the mythological image of the forest as a whole is negative. In folklore, it is often described as dark, gloomy, unknown, fraught with danger, being contrasted with the inhabited and developed space of the villages. The forest pandemonium is also represented mainly by negative characters. On the other hand, in the domestic perception forest is valued for the benefits derived from it: shelter, food, protection from enemies. In addition, Bashkirs, distinguished by a developed aesthetic perception and contemplative thinking, appreciated its beauty, which is also reflected in folklore. In general, the image of forest in the Bashkirs' traditional view of the world appears rather ambiguous. On the one hand, it is the category associated with the other world, unknown, «foreign» territory. On the other hand, the forest has long been a source of various benefits - in the form of construction materials, furs, various food products, and it sheltered them from enemies.
