As usability testing becomes more popular and widely recognized, operating systems’ users are still relying on reviews that are based on the price, standard feature and satisfaction survey as to which product will be patronized. Measuring usability requires assessment on three product attributes or factors namely: effectiveness, efficiency, and user satisfaction. There are thirty-seven (37) respondents used in the study. Each respondent is required to perform the given task in each version of the Windows operating system. Time to complete the task and behavioral manifestations were recorded. Based on the data gathered and analyzed, results show that Windows 10 has the most number of the task with the highest completion rate in comparison with two operating systems in the study. Regarding efficiency, Windows 8 has the highest average task completion time. As to user satisfaction, the majority of the respondents were frustrated in the different task under Windows 8 while most of them are delighted in the tasks under Windows 7. Regarding engagement and boredom, the result reveals that users are engaged at the same time felt bored on tasks under Windows 10.

The choice of best gestures and commands for touchless interfaces is a critical step that determines the user- satisfaction and overall efficiency of surgeon computer interaction. In this regard, usability metrics such as task completion time, error rate, and memorability have a long-standing as potential entities in determining the best gesture vocabulary. In addition, some previous works concerned with this problem have utilized qualitative measures to identify the best gesture. In this work, we hypothesize that there is a correlation between the qualitative properties of gestures (v) and their usability metrics (u). Therefore, we conducted an experiment with linguists to quantify the properties of the gestures. Next, a user study was conducted with surgeons, and the usability metrics were measured. Lastly, linear and non-linear regression techniques were used to find the correlations between u and v. Results show that usability metrics are correlated with the gestures’ qualitative properties ( R2 = 0.4).

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to gain deeper insights into performance differences of younger and older users when performing touch gestures, as well as the influence of tablet device orientation (portrait vs landscape). Design/methodology/approach – The authors performed a comparative study involving 20 younger (25-45 years) and 20 older participants (65-85 years). Each participant executed six gestures with each device orientation. Age was set as a between-subject factor. The dependent variables were task completion time and error rates (missed target rate and finger lift rate). To measure various performance characteristics, the authors implemented an application for the iPad that logged completion time and error rates of the participants when performing six gestural tasks – tap, drag, pinch, pinch-pan, rotate left and rotate right – for both device orientations. Findings – The results show a significant effect of age on completion time and error rates. Means reveal faster completion times and lower error rates for younger users than for older users. In addition, a significant effect of device orientation on error rates could be stated. Means show higher error rates for portrait orientation than for landscape orientation. Qualitative results reveal a clear preference for landscape orientation in both age groups and a lower acceptance of rotation gestures among older participants. Originality/value – In this study the authors were able to show the importance of device orientation as an influencing factor on touch interaction performance, indicating that age is not the exclusive influencing factor.

Controlling accurately the position and velocity of robots in a given time is an important requirement in the industry. The open-source real-time operating systems not only have more advantages than the normal operating systems in both economy and flexibility but also meet the needs. This paper concentrates on building algorithms for controlling the robot trajectory in time using a modern real-time operating system called Linux-Xenomai. Firstly, the paper analyzes several advantages of the real-time operating system Linux-Xenomai comparing general operating systems and other real-time operating systems. Secondly, a real-time controller of a 5 degree-of-freedom (DOF) robot is built based on the real-time operating system Linux-Xenomai. After that, the paper proposes algorithms to test the ability of working in time of the robot. Finally, the real experiments are done to verify the proposed algorithms.

The purpose of this study was to develop prototype of virtual reality(VR) simulation with malocclusion models and evaluate its applicability. Task abilities, task completion time, and a satisfaction survey were compared between dentist trainees and dental students. Participants were instructed to observe virtual malocclusion models and then performed three tasks to diagnose the type of malocclusion, determine clinical findings and develop treatment plans. Their satisfaction with the simulation experience were evaluated using a questionnaire containing five questions. Task abilities of trainees related to clinical features and treatment plans were significantly higher than that of students(p < 0.01). In both groups, the task completion time for the second case was significantly reduced compared to that for the first case(p < 0.01). The satisfaction survey showed high scores and positive responses for this simulation in both groups. If the prototype of VR simulation is continuously advanced, it will be applicable for orthodontic education in pediatric dentistry.

<p>This study assessed the instrumentality of Touch ’n Go eWallet mobile app at selected areas in University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and Politeknik Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin (PTSS) Perlis, Malaysia, in July and August 2019. Fifteen staff from the two institutions was selected as participants. The purpose of the test was to assess the usability of the app and get user feedback to improve the instrumental quality of the application in order to meet user satisfaction and their experience. This report contains the participants’ feedbacks, task completion rates, ease or difficulty of task completion, time on task, errors, and recommendations for improvements. This study used 4 tasks to assess the instrumental quality of Touch ‘n Go eWallet mobile app. Overall, the outcome of the study revealed that the app is generally usable and instrumental to assisting users accomplish their electronic wallet goals. There is however some observed issues in the app that require fixing to enhance the instrumental quality of app.</p>


Interprocess Communication (IPC) is used by the cooperating processes for communication and synchronization. With the advent of Distributed Systems and Microkernel Operating systems, IPC has been used for designing the system for cooperation. This raised the requirements for improving the communication and synchronization for the better performance of the system. Here, a mechanism of synchronization between the processes to reduce the waiting time of process using POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface) threads has been proposed to perform and synchronize the given task.

In this project, we demonstrated how to improve transfer rate when transfering data from a notebook installed FreeBSD operating system to another notebook installed Windows 8 operating system. The method which we used was with customizing the kernel on FreeBSD. Before we customized the kernel, we calculated the average time of the transfer speed with its default kernel. After we got the average time, then we customized its kernel and calculated the average time after we installed the custom kernel. At the end we got faster average time with the customized kernel and the performance better. Index Terms - FreeBSD, Server, Transfer rate, Improving

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a growing research area as a large of number portable devices are being developed. This fact makes operating systems (OS) useful to homogenize the development of these devices, to reduce design times, and to provide tools for developing complex applications. This work presents an operating system scheduler for resource-constraint wireless devices, which adapts the tasks scheduling in changing environments. The proposed adaptive scheduler allows dynamically delaying the execution of low priority tasks while maintaining real-time capabilities on high priority ones. Therefore, the scheduler is useful in nodes with rechargeable batteries, as it reduces its energy consumption when battery level is low, by delaying the least critical tasks. The adaptive scheduler has been implemented and tested in real nodes, and the results show that the nodes lifetime could be increased up to 70% in some scenarios at the expense of increasing latency of low priority tasks.
