Writing is an important skill in language learning and in academic achievement. The level of writing anxiety could affect students' achievements positively or negatively. This research aimed to examine the writing anxiety among Saudi female learners enrolled in English language departments at some Saudi universities. It also aimed to identify the sources of writing anxiety. To this end, a mixed method study was designed in which Writing Apprehension Test (WAT) Scale by Daly and Miller (1975) and an open-ended question were used to collect necessary data from 105 randomly selected learners. For data analysis, two different statistical procedures in Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and a specific formula suggested by Daly and Miller (1975) were applied. Coding was applied to qualitative data. The results indicated that the participants (N = 105) experience moderate level of writing anxiety. In addition, the main sources of writing anxiety were evaluation, generating ideas, grammar, time pressure, and lack of confidence.

This study investigates teachers’ perspective toward autonomous learning in the context of English language learning in the current era.  As a mixed research method then analyzing the collected data, it  exposed that teachers’ perceptions on learning autonomy is low due to many of whom believed that their learners are still reluctant to take control of their study. It further indicated that, during thisCovid-19  pandemic,  a learning autonomy may not be applicable in all context particularly within which school’s facility such as computer library and book library are limited or even not provided.  This study concluded that learning autonomy practice is situational.

This article discusses the implementation of a language learning advising service at a self-access (SAC) center in Cambodia. The SAC was opened in 2011 at a language school in Phnom Penh as a way to provide learners with additional English language learning resources and to promote learner autonomy. While it was somewhat successful in meeting these objectives, an evaluation in late 2014 revealed that the SAC’s full potential was not being realized. In particular, support for learners was lacking, and interaction in the SAC was limited. After meetings between various stakeholders, it was agreed that a language learning advising service should be implemented. This decision has resulted in a number of ongoing developments: Cambodian English teachers have been designated as advisors; they have received training in language learning advising; and learning plans have been developed. The language learning advising system was trialed for one 10-week term, and the newly trained language learning advisors (LLAs) completed surveys about their advising experience. While the responses to these questionnaires showed that LLAs generally have a positive attitude toward advising, they also revealed a number of important areas for development.

English-as-a-Lingua-Franca’s acceleration serves an ultimate goal of preserving English language users’ cultural and linguistic identities. In Vietnam, English has emerged as the common language in the education sector, since it aims to equip learners with language proficiency and competence. Hence, it enables the acquisition of linguistic and cultural capital, which is fundamental to accentuate the future Vietnamese workforce’s personal commitment and competitive advantage in the globalized labor market. Therefore, this mixed-method study seeks to fill missing literature on how capital is acquired and developed through language learning in Vietnamese higher education, based on the interpretation of Bourdieu’s (1986) capital stances in social fields. Among 194 English learners from various cultural and disciplinary backgrounds, data suggested that (1) all forms of capital developed very differently and (2) symbolic capital was directly associated with other forms of capital. Implications are also presented at the conclusion of the article.

English language learning (ELL) children suspected of having specific-language impairment (SLI) should be assessed using the same methods as monolingual English-speaking children born and raised in the United States. In an effort to reduce over- and under-identification of ELL children as SLI, speech-language pathologists (SLP) must employ nonbiased assessment practices. This article presents several evidence-based, nonstandarized assessment practices SLPs can implement in place of standardized tools. As the number of ELL children SLPs come in contact with increases, the need for well-trained and knowledgeable SLPs grows. The goal of the authors is to present several well-establish, evidence-based assessment methods for assessing ELL children suspected of SLI.
