The objective of this study is to produce an infant flour based on attiéké enriched with Moringa oleifera and cashew kernel (Anacardium ¶occidentale L.) powders. For this purpose, Moringa oleifera powder is incorporated in proportions of 10%, 15% and 20% into two types of composite flours (attiéké / unfermented cashew kernel and attiéké / fermented cashew kernel). Mineralogical, physico-chemical and antioxidant activity are performed. The results of the mineralogical analyzes showed potassium is the majority in composite flours. In addition, the calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc contents in the composite flours conformity with the standards. The fortification of attiéké flour with Moringa oleifera and cashew kernel powders resulted in an increase in phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, as well as protein contents which vary from 11.59 ± 0.10 g / 100 g of 16.59 ± 0.26 g / 100 g. Moringa and cashew kernel powders have increased the nutritional quality of attiéké flour.

Dekopon or Hallabong (Citrus reticulate “Shiranui”) is a hybrid fruit that belongs to the citrus fruits. The scientific and commercial interests in dekopon is due to its nutritional composition. The objective of the study was to verify the influence of ethanol as a pretreatment in reducing drying time as well as maintaining nutritional quality (vitamin C, total phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activity) of dekopon slices. The drying with ethanol at 70 °C promoted the greatest reduction in drying time, but the processed pretreated samples at 50 °C presented the highest level of nutritional quality parameters. Seed coat colour is an important determinant of the visual quality of dry beans, as seeds are sold as a dry commodity. Phenolic compounds have a major effect on the colour of bean seeds. The objectives of the study were to determine the changes in phenolic compounds during seed development and in whole seeds of yellow bean genotypes with contrasting seed coat colour, and the effects of storage temperature and duration on seed phenolics and colour. Condensed tannin, phenolic acid, flavonoids, and antioxidant activity were observed as early as 10 d after flowering in the developing seeds of Arikara Yellow, which darken at harvest and during postharvest storage. In contrast, for CDC Sol and AAC Y073 seeds which remain yellow, phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were consistently low. Seed brightness (L*) and yellow colour (b*) were negatively correlated with phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity, and conversely seed redness (a*) was positively correlated with phenolic compounds, confirming a negative influence of phenolic compounds on seed coat colour. Yellow bean genotypes had low anthocyanin but were high in β-carotene. Storage temperature influenced condensed tannin and seed coat colour, whereas the duration of storage influenced phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity, and seed coat colour. Higher temperatures (20 or 30 °C) and longer storage duration (120 or 180 d) generally resulted in darker seeds with increasing redness compared with seeds stored at 6 °C or for 60 d. AAC Y073 and CDC Sol with improved seed coat colour may increase consumer preference, value, and marketability of yellow beans.

This study reports the influence of eight rootstocks (‘Carrizo’ (CC), ‘C-35’ (C35) ‘Cleopatra’ (CL), ‘Volkameriana’ (VK), ‘Macrophylla’ (M), ‘Forner-Alcaide 5’ (FA5), ‘Forner-Alcaide 13’ (FA13) and ‘Forner-Alcaide V17’ (V17)) on the physico-chemical and nutritional quality of ‘Clemenules’ mandarins at three harvest times during two seasons. Fruit quality parameters were influenced by rootstocks, and this effect was mostly harvest time -dependent. External color was overall influenced by rootstocks upon the first harvest. FA13 and C35 induced a breakthrough in color change, while V17 brought about the greatest color increase. CL and V17 initially delayed the fruit maturity index. In the last harvest, while CL had one of the highest maturity indices, V17 exhibited the lowest as acidity was maintained as harvest advanced. The CC and M fruit had the highest and lowest sucrose content, respectively. The highest glucose and fructose contents in fruit were induced by V17, FA5 and CC. The highest citric acid content was displayed by V17 in all the harvests. The FA13, C35 and VK fruit exhibited the highest malic acid content. The effect that rootstock exert on ascorbic acid and flavonoid content depends on the studied season. The results reveal the importance of conducting studies during different seasons to obtain robust results.

The present study was carried out to estimate the physico-chemical characteristic of Melamchi River from January 2011 to December 2013 with a view to assess the nature and degree of pollution. Melamchi River is a snowmelt and rain fed river. River water is mainly used for drinking and irrigation. Water samples were collected on monthly basis from five sites of river. Parameters analyzed include temperature, electrical conductivity, turbidity, pH, hardness, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate, and nitrate. The study revealed seasonal fluctuations of the factors. River water was well oxygenated and alkaline in nature. High level for turbidity (43.25/ NTU) was observed during monsoon, which exceeded compliance levels of WHO (2011) tolerance limits (5/ NTU) for domestic use. Water contained more TDS and EC indicating the impact of agriculture and deforestation near the river area. The analyzed physico-chemical parameters were found within the permissible limit of WHO, except turbidity. Measures should be taken to regulate agricultural and deforestation activities upriver to avoid advert conditions.J. Nat. Hist. Mus. Vol. 29, 2015,, Page: 9-18

Abstract Little is known about which secondary metabolites are responsible for inhibiting pathogenic bacteria and reducing the pro-oxidant effect on the leaves of four medicinal plants used as phytobiotic in animal production. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of four medicinal plants (Anacardium occidentale, Psidium guajava, Morinda citrifolia and Moringa oleifera.) in vitro. A total of six bacterial strains were inoculated, then minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was evaluated in fine powder and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and MBC were determined on the aqueous extract. Also, the in vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated through 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl, as well as the main secondary metabolites were identified and quantified by chromatographic analysis. The results showed that Anacardium occidentale and Psidium guajava leaves had higher antimicrobial activity against all bacterial strains. In addition, Morinda citrifolia inhibited S. aureus in the aqueous extract, although without in vitro bactericidal effect, while Moringa oleifera leaf did not show antimicrobial effect. All plants showed antioxidant capacity, standing out Anacardium occidentale and Psidium guajava. Mainly the leaves of Anacardium occidentale showed high concentrations of quercetin 3-O-glucoside-7-O-rhamnoside, kaempeferol-7-O-glucoside, quercetin, caffeic acid, and cinnamic acid. Apparently, the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity are due to the main polyphenolic compounds identified in medicinal plants (mainly Anacardium occidentale and Psidium guajava); however, further studies are necessary to elucidate the exact mechanism.
