AbstractThis article explores the visual culture of rural improvement in Germany, manifested in agricultural exhibitions, model farms and test plots. It argues that, following the English example, nineteenth-century experts increasingly believed that such material sites were the most effective way to persuade small farmers to embrace change and increase productivity. The presumption was that farmers were habitually keen observers who preferred to learn by seeing and that visual displays would alleviate their characteristic mistrust and build confidence in scientific advisers. The fact that these efforts coincided with the professionalisation of agronomy, the increased influence of scientists in rural policymaking and the rise of elite agricultural institutions revises the existing narrative of the spread of agricultural knowledge in Germany. Based on archival evidence from north-western Prussia, it is clear that many small cultivators responded enthusiastically to these sites, defying stereotypes of ‘dull-wittedness’ and ingrained suspicion of the new.

The adoption of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) corn gene has increased production and agricultural information exchange plays a vital role towards sustained production growth. The study examined the information system by assessing the usefulness of information, frequency of consultations and strength of information exchange in Bt corn production in Cagayan Province, Philippines. Using descriptive correlation design, it was revealed that both technical and economic information from all sources were rated useful. Technical information on seed variety, land preparation, weather forecast, soil management and fertilizer application are frequently utilized while on the economic information only current market prices was frequently used. Frequency of Consultation with personal information sources gained the highest mean value of 5.02 signifying a two to three times exchange of information. Public information sources obtained an average mean of 2.80 which means four or five times contact in a year. This reveals the gap between the corn growers and public information sources. For the mass media sources, both radio (4.56) and television (4.72) are frequently used at two to three times a month. Personal information sources showed strong (224.25 IS) exchange of information between and among the Bt corn growers which comprise their communication network. Total information scores from public and mass media information sources revealed weak exchange of information. The total information score is significantly correlated with membership to organization, years of membership, nature of membership, land ownership and position in the farm. Total information score from friends, radio and newspaper showed significant relationship with income. Thus, information exchange with friends, listening to radio and reading newspaper had a significant influence on the increase of corn growers’ income.

The Simeulue sub-basin is situated off north-western Sumatra between the outer arc and the mainlands. The sediment and geochemical element characteristics of basins are the important sedimentology variables to recognize the process of sediment deposition. However, the characteristics of the sediment and the geochemical elements in the Simeulue subbasin have not been well explained. This study aims to investigate the textural and geochemical elements characteristics of marine sediments and the distribution of these two variables to determine the sedimentary facies in the Simeulue sub-basin. Samples were taken from various depths in the sub-basin and collected during the 2017 Expedition of “Widya Nusantara” by using the “Baruna Jaya VIII” Research Vessel. The grain size trend analysis showed that the middle part of the basin was dominated by mud, while the edge of the basin near the island (mainland) was mostly dominated by coarser sediments. A geochemical element analysis was performed on each sample to observe the origin of the sediments. The results of these two analyses were subjected to multivariate statistics. This approach was selected because it is appropriate for determining the sedimentary facies and the depositional environments. Based on the multivariate analysis, the sedimentary facies in the Simeulue sub-basin was divided into five facies with similar sediment characteristics and depositional environments. These facies were deposited in the environment with low to medium energy.

The composition and spatial distribution of the polychaete fauna on the subtidal soft sediments of the Ría de Aldán (Galicia, north-western Spain) were studied by means of quantitative sampling and multivariate analysis. The faunal distribution was mainly conditioned by a sediment gradient defined by decreasing grain size, from the mouth towards the inner margins of the ría. The coarse and medium sand fauna was mainly dominated by pisionids, spionids and syllids. Finer sediments (fine sand to mud) showed a greater abundance of paraonids, spionids and cirratulids and deposit feeding species. The greatest number of species and diversity were found in coarse sediments.

If we make a set of measurements, such as narrow-band or multicolour photo-electric measurements, which are designed to improve a scheme of classification, and in particular if they are designed to extend the number of dimensions of classification, i.e. the number of classification parameters, then some important problems of analytical procedure arise. First, it is important not to reproduce the errors of the classification scheme which we are trying to improve. Second, when trying to extend the number of dimensions of classification we have little or nothing with which to test the validity of the new parameters.Problems similar to these have occurred in other areas of scientific research (notably psychology and education) and the branch of Statistics called Multivariate Analysis has been developed to deal with them. The techniques of this subject are largely unknown to astronomers, but, if carefully applied, they should at the very least ensure that the astronomer gets the maximum amount of information out of his data and does not waste his time looking for information which is not there. More optimistically, these techniques are potentially capable of indicating the number of classification parameters necessary and giving specific formulas for computing them, as well as pinpointing those particular measurements which are most crucial for determining the classification parameters.
