Aims: To assess the knowledge of Biomedical waste (BMW) categories, colour coding, transport, storage & disposal of Biomedical waste among the healthcare workers. Study Design: Cross sectional. Place and Duration of Study: Multi speciality Hospital, Pune, over the duration of 1 month. Methodology: A predesigned questionnaire containing closed-ended questions was used to conduct this cross sectional study on HCWs. The data related to awareness & knowledge about various aspects of Biomedical waste amongst the Healthcare workers was collected. Results: Out of total 100 Healthcare workers (HCWs), 40 doctors were correctly knowing all the categories of Biomedical waste. 45 doctors & 40 nursing staff (total 85 out of 100 HCWs) could answer correctly the questions on colour coding of BMW. Only 30 doctors & 21 nursing staff could answer correctly about BMW transport. 25 doctors &18 nurses could answer correctly the questions related to BMW storage & disposal. Conclusion: The vigorous & repeated training & evaluation is needed to bridge the observed knowledge gaps amongst the HCWs.

Background: The function of healthcare workers, particularly nursing staff, in taking care of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients, cannot be overemphasized. As the pandemic lasts, burnout among the nursing staff needs to be considered as an important challenge. This was aimed to assess the nurses’ burnout and factors affecting this variable. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, Maslach Burnout Inventory was completed by 261 nurses in Shiraz hospitals (Iran) in April 2020. This questionnaire addresses different aspects, including emotional exhaustion, personal achievement, and depersonalization, to determine the intensity of perceived burnout among nurses during the outbreak. Results: Our data demonstrated that the nurses’ burnout in Shiraz hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic was high (64.6%). Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were observed in 63.6 and 53.3 percent of the participants, respectively. Moreover, the rate of successful personal achievement among these nurses was >97%. Work experience <10 years (P=0.016), hospital ward (P=0.044), the number of deaths observed by nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic (P<0.001), and the total number of shifts during the COVID-19 pandemic (P=0.006) had a positive correlation with emotional exhaustion. Conclusion: Workload and stress resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak seem to be one of the major causes of emotional exhaustion in nurses. Abstract Introduction:In country like India, where there is big and complex health care system, mixed economy, private and Government hospitals working together; while providing services generate waste. It is estimated that the quantity of waste generated from hospitals in our country ranges between 0.5 and 2.0 kg/bed/day and annually about 0.33 million tons of waste are generated in India Aim and objectives:To study the awareness of nursing staff about the biomedical waste segregation in a tertiary care center Material and methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted among the nurses of Justice K.S.Hegde Hospital, Derlakatte. Total of 123 nurses who were present at the time were the study subjects. The pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire which was validated by face validation method was distributed. Results:The total of 96.66% of nurses knew the segregation of biomedical waste was the need of the hour. 90% of them felt they have adequate knowledge about segregation. 96% knew the color coding of sharps and human anatomical waste. But 99% knew the colour coding of blood, blood products and microbiological waste. 67% knew the colour coding of pharmacological waste and double glove disposal. Only 89.3% were confident that they followed the correct methods of segregation.

Abstract Background: In the field of tuberculosis (TB), Community Healthcare Workers (CHWs) have been engaged for advocacy, case detection, and patient support in a wide range of settings. Estimates predict large-sale shortfalls of healthcare workers in low- and middle-income settings by 2030 and strategies are needed to optimize the health workforce to achieve universal availability and accessibility of healthcare. In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) published guidelines on best practices for CHW engagement, and identified remaining knowledge gaps. Stop TB Partnership’s TB REACH initiative has supported interventions using CHWs to deliver TB care in over 30 countries, and utilized the same primary indicator to measure project impact at the population-level for all TB active case finding projects, which makes the results comparable across multiple settings. This study compiled 10 years of implementation data from the initiative’s grantee network to begin to address key knowledge gaps in CHW networks.Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study analyzing the TB REACH data repository (n=123) and primary survey responses (n=50) of project implementers. We designed a survey based on WHO guidelines to understand projects’ practices on CHW recruitment, training, activities, supervision, compensation, and sustainability. We segmented projects by TB notification impact and fitted linear random-effect regression models to identify practices associated with higher changes in notifications. Results: Most projects employed CHWs for advocacy alongside case finding and holding activities. Model characteristics associated with higher project impact included incorporating e-learning in training and having the prospect of CHWs continuing their responsibilities at the close of a project. Factors that trended towards being associated with higher impact were community-based training, differentiated contracts, and non-monetary incentives.Conclusion: In line with WHO guidelines, our findings emphasize that successful implementation approaches provide CHWs with comprehensive training, continuous supervision, fair compensation, and are integrated within the existing primary healthcare system. However, we encountered a great degree of heterogeneity in CHW engagement models, resulting in few practices clearly associated with higher notifications.

Objective: Needlestick injuries are important for healthcare workers due to their morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the risk group of needlestick injuries (NSIs) among healthcare workers, and possible risk groups, actions, and prevention practices of the healthcare workers. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 249 healthcare workers(doctors, nursing staff, laboratory technicians and the cleaning personnel) in a tertiary care pediatric hospital in Turkey. Results: Among the 249 healthcare workers, there were 35 physicians, 124 nursing staff, 11 laboratory technicians and 79 cleaning personnel. Seventy (28.1%) were males, 179 (71.9%) were females. The most common equipment associated with needlestick injury were syringe needles ( 54.6 %), followed by intravenous cannula (peripheral catheter) (17.2%). In 103 (41.2%) cases, the injury occurred during use of the needle, with the greater part of injuries (24%) while establishing a venous access. Most healthcare workers experienced hand injuries (%82.7). Conclusion: This study revealed that the high risk group for needlestick injury was nurses followed by the cleaning personnel. Healthcare workers did not take the necessary measures for themselves. Needlestick injuries could be prevented easily by increasing the use of needles when needed, increasing awareness for using devices with safety features, promoting education and safe work practices for needles and related systems.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on frontline healthcare workers in Pakistan in terms of psychological factors emotional distress, insomnia, and burnout. Study Design: Observational cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted at different hospitals across Pakistan and data collection was carried out from 15th June 2020 till 15th August 2020. Material and Methods: This was a questionnaire-based study aiming to compare the levels of burnout and emotional distress between frontline COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 healthcare workers. Any physician, nurse, and other healthcare workers were recruited from emergency care units and Covid-19 care units (target group), and non-COVID-19 care units (control group). Participation was voluntary and participants had to complete self-reported questionnaires and scales. A mixed-mode data collection was carried out, either in paper or web-based form to ensure maximum participation. Results: The independent t-test showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding depression, stress, and insomnia. The study group showed higher scores for these factors than the control group. Chi-square test of association revealed significant scores of burnout and professional fulfillment in both groups. There was a higher prevalence of burnout in the study group than in the control group. Conclusion: This study concludes that there was a significant psychosocial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the frontline healthcare workers measured in terms of emotional distress, insomnia, and burnout.
