Aim: The aim of this study was to assess some biochemical parameters in the vitreous humor of Rabbits exposed to sodium cyanide. Study Design: This study is an interventional study. Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out at Animal House, Applied and Environmental Biology Department, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, between April 2020 and November 2020. Methodology: A total of twelve (12) rabbits as indicated by Mead’s formula constituted the sample size. The study was divided into three groups including the control. 1 mg/kg sodium cyanide was administered to the rabbits orally in group one and vitreous humor was collected using standard procedure after thirty minutes. In group two the rabbits were put to death mechanically and 1 mg/kg sodium cyanide was administered to the rabbits after thirty minutes, vitreous humor was collected after thirty minutes using standard procedure. The rabbits in group three, control group, were put to death mechanically and nothing was given to the rabbits, then after thirty minutes vitreous humor was collected using standard procedure. Biochemical parameters investigated included vitreous glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total proteins (TP), albumin (ALB), total bilirubin, conjugated bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities. Data were expressed as mean ± SD. Statistical differences between groups were computed using Graph pad prism 7.0 version developed by Graph pad software, San Siago, Califonia, USA. Results were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and significance between groups was taken at p<.05. Results: Vitreous biochemical results showed significant (p<.05) increase in levels of TC, LDL-C, AST, ALT, TB and CB in rabbits given 1 mg/kg sodium cyanide compared to control. Significant (p<.05) decrease in levels of glucose, TP and ALB were also observed. This study also revealed that there was no significant (p<.05) difference in biochemical results of rabbits given 1 mg/kg sodium cyanide thirty minutes after they were put to death mechanically compared to the control. It can be concluded that a lethal dose of sodium cyanide (1 mg/kg) may lead to alterations in vitreous biochemical parameters and this may enhance death differentiation due to sodium cyanide poisoning and other causes of death for example mechanical death.    Conclusion: The findings of this study support a central role for vitreous humor biochemistry in many postmortem forensic and pathological evaluations and it could also be used for death differentiation in sodium cyanide poisoning.

Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant and antihyperlipidaemic effect of methanol extracts of Asteracantha longifolia and Pergularia daemia leaf in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Methods: Swiss albino rats were made diabetic by a single dose of alloxan monohydrate (150 mg/kg i.p.). Blood glucose levels and body weights of rats were measured using on weekly intervals i.e day 0,7,14 and 21 after daily administration of both extracts at dose 200 mg/kg bw. Other biochemical parameters such as serum cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol, phospholipids and serum protein, albumin, globulin levels were also measured at the end of study. The antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD & GSH) were also measured in the diabetic rats. Results: In the acute toxicity study, methanol extract of both plants were non-toxic at 2000 mg/kg in rats. The increased body weight, decreased blood glucose and other biochemical parameters level were observed in diabetic rats treated with methanol extracts of both plants compared to diabetic control rats. The antioxidant activity of both plant extracts were also exhibited significant activity. In diabetic rats, methanol extract of both plants administration, altered lipid profiles were reversed to near normal than diabetic control rats. Conclusions: Methanol extract of both plants (Asteracantha longifolia and Pergularia daemia) leaf possesses significant antioxidant and antihyperlipidaemic activity in diabetic rats.

The Clinical study included individuals (m23ales and females aged 25-75y) with cardiovascular disease. The activity of Lecithin: cholesterol acyl transferase (LCAT) and glutathione peroxidase(GPx) was estimated, in addition to the level of apolipoprotein AI (apo AI), apolipoprotein B100 (apoB100), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c), glutathione (GSH), peroxy nitrate (PN), malondialdehyde (MDA), glucose and certain elements (Zn, Cu, Mg and Co) in blood serum. The results showed that there was a significant decrease in the activity of LCAT and GPx, and the level of apoAI, HDL-c, GSH, Zn and Mg. on the other hand, it was shown that there was a significant increase in the level of apoB100, TC, TG,  LDL-c, PN, Glu, Cu and Co but on unsignificant change in the level of MDA for both male and females.   http://dx.doi.org/10.25130/tjps.25.2020.026

Background and Objective: Yoghurt, especially bio-yoghurt has long been recognized as a product with many health benefits for consumers. Also, honey and olive oil have considerable nutritional and health effects. So, the effect of administration of yoghurt made using ABT culture and fortified with honey (2 and 6%), olive oil (1 and 4%) or honey + olive oil (2+1 and 6+4% respectively) on some biological and hematological properties of rats was investigated.Methods:The body weight gain, serum lipid level, blood glucose level, serum creatinine level, Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase (GOT) activity, Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase (GPT) activity, leukocytes and lymphocytes counts of rats were evaluated.Results:Blending of bio-yoghurt with rats&#039; diet improved body weight gain. Concentrations of Total plasma Cholesterol (TC), High-Density Lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), Low-Density Lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), Very Low-Density Lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL) and Triglycerides (TG) significantly lowered in plasma of rats fed bio-yoghurt. Levels of TC, LDL, VLDL, and TG also decreased in rat groups feed bio-yoghurt supplemented with honey and olive oil. LDL concentrations were reduced by 10.32, 18.51, 34.17, 22.48, 43.30% in plasma of rats fed classic starter yoghurt, ABT yoghurt, ABT yoghurt contained 6% honey, ABT yoghurt contained 4% olive oil and ABT yoghurt contained 6% honey + 4% olive oil respectively. The blood glucose, serum creatinine, GOT and GPT values of rats decreased while white blood cells and lymphocytes counts increased by feeding bioyoghurt contained honey and olive oil.Conclusion:The findings enhanced the multiple therapeutic effects of bio-yoghurt supplemented with honey and olive oil.
