The success of revenue management starting in the mid-1980s has been driving pricing decision to be more tactical and operational. Since then, statistics and operations research have been important tools in pricing and revenue optimization. This research seeks to determine optimal price for mobile broadband services of a particular service provider. The case study is mobile broadband services in Indonesian market. We made a plausible assumption that there is no capacity constraint. We used choice-based conjoint with hierarchical Bayes estimation method to derive individual part-worth utilities, based on which market simulation was run to obtain the price-response function. By combining this with information about market size, we came up with a number of data points representing the demand function. Instead of fitting the data points with some theoretical demand functions, we used monotonic cubic splines to interpolate the demand function. Accordingly, we did not use explicit demand functions in the optimization, but a numerical interpolation function to estimate demand for any particular price level. Using enumeration, we then came up with a recommended contribution-maximizing prices under one, two, and three fare-classes segmentation. We assumed a perfect segmentation where cannibalization and arbitrage were not present. Further, we discussed a generalized optimal segmentation problem under that assumption. We also investigated the impact of the changes in competitors’ service attributes on the optimal prices.

Price differentiation may not be as effective in increasing profitability due to imperfect segmentation, arbitrage, and, cannibalization. Cannibalization takes place when customer with higher willingness-to-pay buys lower-priced product. This research proposes an approach to incorporating cannibalization into pricing optimization using choice data. From choice data, individual level utilities are estimated using hierarchical Bayes and individual choice is predicted using randomized first choice simulation. Individual choices are then aggregated to obtain the demand function. The novelty of this research is in the way cannibalization is incorporated into the pricing optimization. Instead of integrating cannibalization into the demand function or representing it as a separate component in the optimization formulation, in this research, cannibalizing products are incorporated into the simulation scenario as competing products, based on which the demand functions used in the optimization are derived. This approach is more direct and realistic than those in the previous research. The approach was implemented in a case study of mobile broadband services in Indonesian price-sensitive market. The result shows that two-fare-class price differentiation incoporated with product differentiation increases total contribution of about 60% compared to single-fare-class policy. Furthermore, it is also shown from our case study that starting from a three-fare-class policy, through iterations, our approach suggests that policy with two-fare-class results in a not significantly different total contribution.

This article examines the impact of institutional quality on bilateral trade flow between Malaysia and selected 25 African Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries. Four institutional qualities were selected from World Governance Indicators with other trade predictors from the period from 1985 to 2016. Using gravity model of trade and Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood estimation method (PPML) technique, the results confirm that government effectiveness, regulatory quality and political stability have an adverse effect on bilateral trade flow among the OIC countries in Africa. On the other hand, these institutional quality variables were considered as a strength for Malaysian economic growth. Therefore, better institutional quality reforms are needed among OIC member countries in Africa in order to accelerate trade, economic growth and development in their region.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight that, in order to assess the availability of different HVDC cable transmission systems, a more detailed characterization of the cable management significantly affects the availability estimation since the cable represents one of the most critical elements of such systems. The analyzed case study consists of a multi-terminal direct current system based on both line commutated converter and voltage source converter technologies in different configurations, whose availability is computed for different transmitted power capacities. For these analyses, the matrix-based reliability estimation method is exploited together with the Monte Carlo approach and the Markov state space one. This paper shows how reliability analysis requires a deep knowledge of the real installation conditions. The impact of these conditions on the reliability evaluation and the involved benefits are also presented.

With the wide availability of low-cost proximity sensors, a large body of research focuses on digital person-to-person contact tracing applications that use proximity sensors. In most contact tracing applications, the impact of SARS-CoV-2 spread through touching contaminated surfaces in enclosed places is overlooked. This study is focused on tracing human contact within indoor places using the open OGC IndoorGML standard. This paper proposes a graph-based data model that considers the semantics of indoor locations, time, and users’ contexts in a hierarchical structure. The functionality of the proposed data model is evaluated for a COVID-19 contact tracing application with scalable system architecture. Indoor trajectory preprocessing is enabled by spatial topology to detect and remove semantically invalid real-world trajectory points. Results show that 91.18% percent of semantically invalid indoor trajectory data points are filtered out. Moreover, indoor trajectory data analysis is innovatively empowered by semantic user contexts (e.g., disinfecting activities) extracted from user profiles. In an enhanced contact tracing scenario, considering the disinfecting activities and sequential order of visiting common places outperformed contact tracing results by filtering out unnecessary potential contacts by 44.98 percent. However, the average execution time of person-to-place contact tracing is increased by 58.3%.

Purpose This paper aims to provide empirical evidence for the impact globalization has had on the performance of the banking sector in South Africa. In addition, this study also investigates bank-specific characteristics and macroeconomic conditions that may influence the performance of the banking sector. Design/methodology/approach The authors use data collected for all commercial banks in South Africa between 1998 and 2012. The ratio of return on assets was used to measure bank performance. They then used the dynamic panel regression with the generalized method of moments as an estimation method to investigate the potential determinants and the impact of globalization on bank performance. Findings Positive impact of greater economic integration and trade movements of the host country, while greater social globalization in the host country tends to exert negative influence on bank profitability. The results show that banks originating from the relatively more economically globalized countries tend to perform better, while banks headquartered in countries with greater social and political globalizations tend to exhibit lower profitability levels. Originality/value An empirical model was developed that allows for the performance of multinational banks to depend on internal and external factors. Moreover, unlike the previous studies on bank performance, in this empirical analysis, we control for the different dimensions of globalizations while taking into account the origins of the multinational banks. The procedure allows us to test for the home field, the liability of foreignness and global advantage hypotheses to deduce further insights into the prospects of banking across borders.

Recently, the integration of an inertial navigation system (INS) and the Global Positioning System (GPS) with a two-antenna GPS receiver has been suggested to improve the stability and accuracy in harsh environments. As is well known, the statistics of state process noise and measurement noise are critical factors to avoid numerical problems and obtain stable and accurate estimates. In this paper, a modified extended Kalman filter (EKF) is proposed by properly adapting the statistics of state process and observation noises through the innovation-based adaptive estimation (IAE) method. The impact of innovation perturbation produced by measurement outliers is found to account for positive feedback and numerical issues. Measurement noise covariance is updated based on a remodification algorithm according to measurement reliability specifications. An experimental field test was performed to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed state estimation method against dynamic model errors and measurement outliers.

This study was undertaken to determine the impact of sarcomere length (SL) on the level of cooperative activation of the cardiac myofilament at physiological [Mg2+]. Active force development was measured in skinned rat cardiac trabeculae as a function of free [Ca2+] at five SLs (1.85–2.25 μm; 1 mM free [Mg2+]; 15°C). Only muscle preparations with minimal force rundown during the entire protocol were included in the analysis (average 7.2 ± 1.7%). Median SL was measured by on-line computer video micrometry and controlled within 0.01 μm. Care was taken to ensure a sufficient number of data points in the steep portion of the [Ca2+]-force relationship at every SL to allow for accurate fit of the data to a modified Hill equation. Multiple linear regression analysis of the fit parameters revealed that both maximum, Ca2+-saturated force and Ca2+sensitivity were a significant function of SL ( P < 0.001), whereas the level of cooperativity did not depend on SL ( P = 0.2). Further analysis of the [Ca2+]-force relationships revealed a marked asymmetry that, also, was not affected by SL ( P = 0.2–0.6). Finally, we found that the level of cooperativity in isolated skinned myocardium was comparable to that reported for intact, nonskinned myocardium. Our results suggest that an increase in SL induces an increase in the Ca2+ responsiveness of the cardiac sarcomere without affecting the level of cooperativity.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the health of individuals physically, mentally, and socially. This study aims to gain a deeper understanding of this impact across the pandemic from a biopsychosocial stance. Methods: A survey created by the research team was employed between November 2020 and February 2021 across social media, relevant organizations, and networks. The survey incorporated 5-time points across the different stages of the pandemic, covering biological, psychological, and social. There were 5 items for each survey (Very Positive affect to Very Negative affect), and analysis was undertaken using SPSS version 16. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric Friedman and Wilcoxon Tests, as well as correlations between the three domains, were implemented. Results: This study included 164 participants (77.0% female and 35.0% male) across 24 out of 38 counties in the UK. The impact of COVID-19 on biological domain was significant across the five data points χ2(4) = 63.99, p < 0.001, psychological χ2(4) = 118.939, p <0.001 and socially χ2(4) = 186.43, p <0.001. Between the 5 data points, 4 out of 5 had a negative impact, however between the first stage of lockdown and the easing of restrictions, findings for biological (Z=-2.35, p <0.05), psychological (Z=-6.61, p < 0.001), and socially (Z = -8.61, p <0.001) were positive. Negative correlations between the three domains across the pandemic are apparent, but in later stages, the biological domain had a positive correlation r = 0.52, p < 0.001. Conclusion: The data shows a negative impact from the self-reported perception of wellbeing from a biopsychosocial stance over time, as well as perceiving the three domains to interact negatively. To address these biopsychosocial issues, the research implies a place-based integrated recovery effort is needed, addressing biological, psychological, and social issues simultaneously. Further research should investigate biopsychosocial health among a more generalizable population.

ABSTRAKLayanan mobile broadband LTE telah berkembang di Indonesia, namun penyebarannya belum merata. Selain itu, sumber daya frekuensi semakin terbatas seiring dengan meningkatnya trafik layanan broadband. Maka untuk mengatasi hal tersebut, spektrum frekuensi 850 MHz dapat diterapkan pada teknologi LTE advance untuk meningkatkan penetrasi mobile broadband. Maka, untuk mengukur tingkat penetrasi, sehingga dilakukan perancangan LTE Advance 850 MHz yang dibandingkan dengan LTE 1800 MHz eksisting berdasarkan pedekatan cakupan dan kapasitas jaringan. Perhitungan dan simulasi menghasilkan peningkatan penetrasi cakupan wilayah hingga 65% ketika menerapkan LTE Advanced 850 MHz. Sedangkan pendekatan kapasitas, pada parameter active user, jumlah connected user pada frekuensi 850 MHz mencapai 98% jauh dibandingkan frekuensi 1800 Mhz yang mencapai 91%, serta kualitas sinyal RSRP meningkat 37%-46%Kata kunci: LTE Advanced, 850MHz, Effective Throughput, Active User, Penetrasi, Broadband ABSTRACTLTE mobile broadband services is growing rapidly in Indonesia, however the deployment does not spread evenly, especially in remote area. Moreover, resource of frequency spectrum is limited because of the growth of broadband traffic. Thus, frequency spectrum 850 MHz can be implemented for LTE Advanced to increase mobile broadband penetration. So, to measure LTE penetration level, LTE Advanced 850 MHz design is compared to the existing LTE 1800 MHz by coverage and capacity approachment. According to calculation and simulation, coverage penetration increase up to 65% as LTE Advanecd 850 MHz implemetation. While, the connected user of LTE 850 MHz reach 98% when compared to LTE Advanced 1800 MHz that only reach up to 91% and also signal quality increase up to 37%-46%.Keywords: LTE Advanced, 850MHz, Effective throughput, Active user, Penetration, Broadband
