This paper is concerned with the study of wave pressures exerted upon breakwaters of the vertical type from overtopping waves• The formulae for maximum wave pressure upon vertical walls and the wave crest elevation for overtopping waves are suggested by the author. The phase interval method for the maximum wave pressure is also given.

Wave disturbance study for a closed end jetty conducted both in laboratory and through a numerical model is presented in this study. Shore protection structures and the structures at the end of the piers are considered for the calculation of the wave disturbance map. The connection locations of the jetties have been designed as vertical walls. These vertical structures and armored waterfront structures would affect the wave behavior in the study area along jetty axis causing reflection of waves and therefore the wave height in front of the structures might increase. This study intends to clarify wave agitation problem by using a numerical model with the help of physical model study.

The wave-pressure formulas derived in our laboratory have been verified by the investigations of the slide of the vertical walls of composite-type breakwaters due to severe waves during heavy storms which have attacked numerous harbors in Japan since 1959. Some of the examples are shown in this paper.

By carrying out a set of experiments on the responses of vertical concrete/RC walls to tsunami impacts, the characteristics of the responses of concrete/RC walls to tsunami impacts were investigated. Experiments on both the responses of walls to only tsunami wave pressure and those to both tsunami wave pressure and debris collision were carried out. In experiments on the responses only to tsunami wave pressure, flexural failure at the base of the wall was observed when the bending moment at the base of the wall was greater than the predicted cracking moment. In experiments on the responses to both tsunami wave pressure and debris impact, flexural cracks and failure at the base of the wall were observed in some cases, and impulsive oscillations whose frequency immediately after debris collision depended on the debris material were observed.

This paper is concerned with the study of the breaking wave pressure exerted upon the breakwater of the vertical type. The method of calculation of the wave pressure, named the quasistatical method, is based with the theory of the impact of the water jet en the vertical plane and some new results of the experimental data. The formulas for the calculation of the pressure distribution of the breaking wave and the surf wave on the vertical wall are given.

The research aims to disclose the essence of an interval method and its introduction as a research tool for the methodology of cultural studies. The object of research is the methodology of culture, the subject of research is the interval method formed in the methodology of post-modernism. In the article, the author attempts to explicate key concepts of the interval method and justifies the necessity of its use in cultural research. Scientific novelty consists in introduction of the interval method into the methodology of cultural studies. The conclusion is made considering the possibility of introduction of the interval method in the methodology of cultural studies as a tool for multidimensional analysis of culture.
