Nye kulturstudier [New Cultural Studies] is the first introduction to cultural studies in Scandinavia and an impressive presentation of the subject. The book aims to explain how cultural studies emerged as an interdisciplinary field in humanities and social sciences. Other introductions to cultural research in ethnology and anthropology have been produced – but this one is different, since it is more comprehensive and ambitious. Nye kulturstudier is the result of interdisciplinary collaboration between four colleagues from Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Senior lecturer Anne Scott Sørensen and Professor Ole Martin Høystad are affiliated to the Institute for Literature, Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense. Professor Erling Bjurström belongs to Tema Q at Linköping University, and Professor Halvard Vike works at the Institute for Social Anthropology at Oslo University. The authors comment that they are oriented towards different subjects and educational programmes at their respective universities. The book begins with a background to the theories and scientific traditions. This is followed by Cultural Analysis and Methodology, a chapter on Identity, Globalisation and Multiculturalism, one on Taste, Lifestyle and Consumption and, finally, by Nature, Body and Experience Landscapes.

The article analyzes the phenomenon of the "cultural turn" in a series of fixed methodological turns in the social and humanitarian knowledge of the last decades. Appeal to this trend in different research fields makes it possible to discover the cultural direction of scientific search, which can be linked to the emergence of a special subject area of culturology. In turn, the emerging cultural research in its domestic experience is difficult to determine with the specifics of its research task. Moreover, it was the "cultural turn" in the social and humanitarian sphere in the West that was realized by its own research project. "Cultural studies" (the Birmingham (UK) Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies or The Birmingham School), which is an interdisciplinary research area that includes feminism, poststructuralism, post-modernism, post-colonialism, aspects of Marxism and humanism in the study of the process of creating values, values, identities. Difficulties in culturology self-determination of their theoretical originality in the study of culture in the context of the culture-centeredness of various subjectmatter branches do not reduce, but, on the contrary, increase its research potential for an integral examination of culture. However, the success of the scientific contribution of culturology in understanding the primary importance of culture in sociocultural processes is seen in the productive use of culture achieved in subject-oriented social analysis as diverse practices. Thus, culturology joins those studies that today increasingly pay attention to "practices" as a field in which it seeks a solution of pressing anthropological and socio-cultural problems. Today's request for an understanding of social processes, which in its complexity, the more so, does not fit into a predetermined human dimension, actualize a review of the understanding of society in the light of living human interaction. Then the multilayeredness, the diversity of the phenomenon of culture, the awareness of its various types will contribute to the discovery of culture as a living life of people fixed in living experience, defining it as a situationally manifested meaningful order of action.

Abstract In this study, we look at student perceptions of a first course in linear algebra, focusing on two specific aspects. The first is the statement by Carlson that a fog rolls in once abstract notions such as subspaces, span and linear independence are introduced, while the second investigates statements made by several authors regarding the negative emotions that students can experience during the course. An attempt is made to mitigate this through mediation to include a significant number of applications, while continually dwelling on the key concepts of the subject throughout the semester. The results show that students agree with Carlson’s statement, with the concept of a subspace causing particular difficulty. However, the research does not reveal the negative emotions alluded to by other researchers. The students note the importance of grasping the key concepts and are strongly in favour of using practical applications to demonstrate the utility of the theory.

Considering total crisis in education in Informational Age, we suggest that to overcome the crisis, it is necessary to promote pedagogical science up from "pre-paradigm stage” to the "paradigm stage". For this purpose it is necessary to separate the "educational science" from "education." “Educational paradigm” in such study will be the subject of the science. The key concepts for the "pedagogical paradigm" should be the concepts of "educational practice", "class of problems" and "educational text". We offer some axioms around these concepts.

This article is dedicated to the examination of euphemisms in the various-system languages – English and Buryat that contain view of the world by a human, and the ways of their conceptualization. Euphemisms remain insufficiently studied. Whereupon, examination of linguistic expression of the key concepts of culture is among the paramount programs of modern linguistics, need for the linguoculturological approach towards analysis of euphemisms in the languages, viewing it in light of the current sociocultural transformations, which are refer to euphemisms and values reflected by them. The subject of this research is the euphemisms in the English and Buryat languages, representing the semiosphere “corporeal and spiritual”. The scientific novelty consists in introduction of the previously unexamined euphemism in Buryat language that comprise semiosphere “corporeal and spiritual” into the scientific discourse. The analysis of language material testifies to the fact that in various cultures the topic of intimacy and sex is euphemized differently. The lexis indicating the intimate parts of the body is vividly presented in the West, while in Buryat language – rather reserved. The author also determines the common, universal, and nationally marked components elucidating the linguistic worldview of different ethnoses and cultures.

The main museums in Estonia and Latvia have lately staged new exhibitions that proceed from a contemporary museological approach and reflect the results of historical research. The article compares three cases which present alternative but complementary interpretations of the Soviet period. The authors pay special attention to the application of the biographical method prominent in contemporary cultural research, and the museological method of multivocality. They conclude that in the case of multivocality, effectively addressing different visitor groups is a great challenge to curators. There is a risk that the simplified mediation of contradictory memories and views will leave a gap for visitors with less prior knowledge about the subject of the exhibition. In large exhibition teams, the curator has a crucial role to play in negotiating with team members to prevent the concept from dispersing. In the cases studied, it is possible to observe the curators’ views and detect a similar attempt to interpret complex topics through biographies. The analysis concludes that in the context of contemporary museological approaches, the voice of the curator remains essential, especially when mediating exhibits, for they cannot speak for themselves.

The purpose of the article is to analyze and structure the historiography of the basic historical and cultural studies that study the spatial-figurative and technological means of expression in the performing arts. The scientific novelty of the research is the first complex interdisciplinary systematic selection and analytical study of sources on the role of spatial and technological means of expressiveness in the creation of stage imagery. Through the use ofmultimodal and trans-system approaches, the author concludes that the problems of space-visual and technological means of expressiveness in the performing arts have been fragmented and studied from different angles by both scholars and theater practitioners. Today, however, there is a lack of comprehensive cultural research on the problems of creating stage imagery by spatial and technological means of expression.Key words: historiography, stage imagery, stage space, technological means.
