Extrusion-torsion simultaneous processing is a very attractive technique for fabricating a rod-shape material with fine grain and random texture. We have proposed a new screw form rolling process combined with preliminary extrusion-torsion simultaneous working. Microstructure evolution and mechanical property change of AZ91D magnesium alloy during extrusion-torsion simultaneous processing was examined through microstructure observation, X-ray diffraction analysis and micro-Vickers hardness measurement. By the addition of torsion, the crystal orientation of AZ91D magnesium alloy workpiece was drastically changed from basal crystalline orientation to the random orientation. Crystal grain occurred through the dynamic recrystallization and tended to coarsen with an increase of extrusion-torsion temperature. Grain refinement under 2 um was achieved at the lowest extrusion-torsion temperature of 523 K. M8 gauge AZ91D magnesium alloy screw was successfully formed at room temperature using the extrusion-twisted workpiece preliminary solution treating at 678 K for 345.6 ks. It was found that the extrusion-torsion temperature of 678 K must be selected to fabricate the good screw without any defects.

The ZM5-0.1%RE magnesium alloy was heated to 800°C, when the surface oxide film was formed, the ZM5-0.1% RE Magnesium alloy which had being oxidized obtained by removing the surface oxidation film on the ZM5-0.1%RE magnesium alloy at room temperature. TGA curve, oxidaxion kinetics curves at constant temperatuers of the alloy and XRD spectrum of the surface film were analyzed in order to investigate the sureface oxidation behavior. The results show that the alloy still has anti-oxidation performance, And the oxide inerease occurred mostly between 400°C and 700°C,a layer of tight oxide film with 4-5.5um and composed of RE2O3, MgO, Al2O3and Mg17Al12was formed on the surface of magnesiurn alloy. The tight surface oxide film prevented the further oxidation of the base magnesiurn alloy, It show that the regeneration ability of oxidation film on ZM5-0.1%RE Magnesium Alloy was good.

We compared the newly developed heat resistant magnesium alloy with conventional ones by Thixomolding® and aluminum alloy by die casting. Tensile properties at elevated temperatures of AXEJ6310 were equal to those of ADC12. In particular, elongation tendency of AXEJ6310 at higher temperature was better than those of the other alloys. Creep resistance of AXEJ6310 was larger than that of AE42 by almost 3 orders and smaller than that of ADC12 by almost 2 orders of magnitude. Fatigue limits at room temperature and 423K of AXEJ6310 was superior among conventional magnesium alloys.

Magnesium alloy sheets had to be rolled at elevated temperature to avoid cracking. The poor workability of magnesium alloy is ascribed to its hcp crystallography and insufficient activation of independent slip systems. Present authors have succeeded in 1-pass heavy rolling of AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet below 473K by raising rolling speed above 1000m/min. Heavy reduction larger than 60% can be applied by 1-pass high speed rolling even at room temperature. The improvement of workability at lower rolling temperature is due to temperature rise by plastic working. The texture of heavily rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy sheet is investigated in the present study. The texture of sheets rolled 60% at room temperature was <0001>//ND basal texture. At the rolling temperature above 373K, the peak of (0001) pole tilted ±10-15 deg toward RD direction around TD axisto form a double peak texture. The texture varied through thickness. At the surface, the (0001) peak tilted ±10-15 deg toward TD direction around RD axis to form a TD-split double peak texture. The direction of (0001) peak splitting rotated 90 deg from the surface to the center of thickness. Heavily rolled magnesium alloy sheets have non-basal texture. The sheets having non-basal texture are expected to show better ductility than sheets with basal texture.
