Most software projects take place in a volatile environment in which many dangers exist that may affect the successful outcome of the project. After completion of the project an evaluation may show that many of the problems encountered during the project could have been foreseen before they actually occurred. Risk management is an approach that is aimed at predicting the occurrence of this type of problem and at taking counter measures to either prevent them from affecting the project or to soften their impact. In this paper the basic activities related to risk management are described. Furthermore a concrete method aimed at supporting risk management is presented. This method has been used successfully in practice. Some of the results obtained by using it are presented on the basis of five cases. Some conclusions are that: (1) the use of a short and structured checklist will ease identification of and discussions about risks, (2) a risk management method in which explicit use is made of a group related approach, involving all parties, will increase reliability and acceptance of the results, and (3) involvement of a neutral process risk advisor will further both the successful use of the method and the acceptance of the results.

The innovative paradigm developed by Bureau Veritas has been applied to achieve superior outcomes and benefits for a major oil and gas player. The focus of this innovative approach achieved operational security and risk management for the critical ageing assets. The paradigm and its vital components will become the benchmark for the management and improvement of the performance of ageing assets and serve as a fundamental input to new generation design for oil and gas facilities. Among the key challenges in managing the performance (risk and integrity) of new and ageing assets are the understanding of process safety and critical equipment condition. When discussing with senior management the issues foremost on their minds, Bureau Veritas has found the answer is a common theme—how can I be confident the design of new or existing facilities is fit-for-purpose for the duration of the asset’s life? The integrated approach has brought together the leading concepts/tools in process risk management and prognostic health and reliability engineering. These components include rigorous risk-assessments of the process as well as sensing design based on failure mode consequence effect analysis (FMCEA), data acquisition and processing (real-time monitoring and data fusion), diagnostic and prognostic models and systems for the effective management asset(s). The result of this approach creates a value proposition of financial significance advantage.

Business processes and business success that depends on information technology (IT) is now closely associated with IT risks, which is influenced by growing IT risk management and control needs. It is vitally important to identify, analyse and reduce systemic risk in order to avoid undesirable consequences, such as information loss, data leaks or damage. A critical success factor in this situation is the systematic and continuous IT risk management. This paper aims to analyse one part of the IT risk management process –risk identification. The article invoked the methods of literature analysis, synthesis, comparison, and generalization. Pagrindinis sėkmės veiksnys siekiant užtikrinti organizacijos sėkmę valdant IT yra sistemingas ir tęstinis IT rizikos valdymas. Straipsnyje keliamas tikslas išanalizuoti vieną iš IT rizikos valdymo proceso etapų – rizikų identifikavimą. Straipsnyje pasitelkiami tokie metodai, kaip mokslinės literatūros analizė, sisteminimas, apibendrinimas.
