A metaheuristic algorithm can be a realistic solution when optimal control problems require a significant computational effort. The problem stated in this work concerns the optimal control of microalgae growth in an artificially lighted photobioreactor working in batch mode. The process and the dynamic model are very well known and have been validated in previous papers. The control solution is a closed-loop structure whose controller generates predicted control sequences. An efficient way to make optimal predictions is to use a metaheuristic algorithm, the particle swarm optimization algorithm. Even if this metaheuristic is efficient in treating predictions with a very large prediction horizon, the main objective of this paper is to find a tool to reduce the controller’s computational complexity. We propose a soft sensor that gives information used to reduce the interval where the control input’s values are placed in each sampling period. The sensor is based on measurement of the biomass concentration and numerical integration of the process model. The returned information concerns the specific growth rate of microalgae and the biomass yield on light energy. Algorithms, which can be used in real-time implementation, are proposed for all modules involved in the simulation series. Details concerning the implementation of the closed loop, controller, and soft sensor are presented. The simulation results prove that the soft sensor leads to a significant decrease in computational complexity.

In this paper, the principles of a metaheuristic algorithm based on tunicate swarm behavior are shown. The Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (TSA for short) was used for solving problems in applied mechanics (speed reducer, cantilever beam and three-dimensional beam optimization). In the end, a comparison of results obtained by TSA and results obtained by other methods is given.

Metaheuristic optimization algorithms are one of the most effective methods for solving complex engineering problems. However, the performance of a metaheuristic algorithm is related to its exploration ability and exploitation ability. Therefore, to further improve the African vultures optimization algorithm (AVOA), a new metaheuristic algorithm, an improved African vultures optimization algorithm based on tent chaotic mapping and time-varying mechanism (TAVOA), is proposed. First, a tent chaotic map is introduced for population initialization. Second, the individual’s historical optimal position is recorded and applied to individual location updating. Third, a time-varying mechanism is designed to balance the exploration ability and exploitation ability. To verify the effectiveness and efficiency of TAVOA, TAVOA is tested on 23 basic benchmark functions, 28 CEC 2013 benchmark functions and 3 common real-world engineering design problems, and compared with AVOA and 5 other state-of-the-art metaheuristic optimization algorithms. According to the results of the Wilcoxon rank-sum test with 5%, among the 23 basic benchmark functions, the performance of TAVOA has significantly better than that of AVOA on 13 functions. Among the 28 CEC 2013 benchmark functions, the performance of TAVOA on 9 functions is significantly better than AVOA, and on 17 functions is similar to AVOA. Besides, compared with the six metaheuristic optimization algorithms, TAVOA also shows good performance in real-world engineering design problems.

Software effort estimation is one of important area in project management which used to predict effort for each person to develop an application. Besides, Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO) II is a common model used to estimate effort estimation. There are two coefficients in estimating effort of COCOMO II which highly affect the estimation accuracy. Several methods have been conducted to estimate those coefficients which can predict a closer value between actual effort and predicted value.  In this paper, a new metaheuristic algorithm which is known as Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA) is proposed in several scenario of iteration. Besides, FPA is also compared to several metaheuristic algorithm, namely Cuckoo Search Algorithm and Particle Swarm Optimization. After evaluated by using Mean Magnitude of Relative Error (MMRE), experimental results show that FPA obtains the best result in estimating effort compared to other algorithms by reached 52.48% of MMRE in 500 iterations.
