AbstractIt is known that NUT solution has many interesting features and pathologies like being non-singular and having closed timelike curves. It turns out that in higher dimensions horizon topology cannot be spherical but it has instead to be product of 2-spheres so as to retain radial symmetry of spacetime. In this letter we wish to present a new solution of pure Gauss–Bonnet $$\Lambda $$ Λ -vacuum equation describing a black hole with NUT charge. It has three interesting cases: (a) black hole with both event and cosmological horizons with singularity being hidden behind the former, (b) a regular spacetime free of both horizon and singularity, and (c) black hole with event horizon without singularity and cosmological horizon. Singularity here is always non-centric at $$r \ne 0$$ r ≠ 0 .

Abstract We construct the 4-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N}=\frac{1}{2} $$ N = 1 2 and $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 inhomogeneously mass-deformed super Yang-Mills theories from the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1* and $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2* theories, respectively, and analyse their supersymmetric vacua. The inhomogeneity is attributed to the dependence of background fluxes in the type IIB supergravity on a single spatial coordinate. This gives rise to inhomogeneous mass functions in the $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory which describes the dynamics of D3-branes. The Killing spinor equations for those inhomogeneous theories lead to the supersymmetric vacuum equation and a boundary condition. We investigate two types of solutions in the $$ \mathcal{N}=\frac{1}{2} $$ N = 1 2 theory, corresponding to the cases of asymptotically constant mass functions and periodic mass functions. For the former case, the boundary condition gives a relation between the parameters of two possibly distinct vacua at the asymptotic boundaries. Brane interpretations for corresponding vacuum solutions in type IIB supergravity are also discussed. For the latter case, we obtain explicit forms of the periodic vacuum solutions.

Assuming the existence of a 5D purely kinetic scalar field on the class of warped product spaces we investigate the possibility of mimic both an inflationary and a quintessential scenarios on 4D hypersurfaces, by implementing a dynamical foliation on the fifth coordinate instead of a constant one. We obtain that an induced chaotic inflationary scenario with a geometrically induced scalar potential and an induced quasi-vacuum equation of state on 4D dynamical hypersurfaces is possible. While on a constant foliation, the universe can be considered as matter-dominated today, in a family of 4D dynamical hypersurfaces, the universe can be passing period of accelerated expansion with a deceleration parameter nearly -1. This effect of the dynamical foliation results negligible at the inflationary epoch allowing for a chaotic inflationary scenario and becomes considerable at the present epoch allowing a quintessential scenario.

We have obtained the general solution of the Einstein vacuum equation for the axially symmetric stationary metric in which both the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for particle motion and the Klein - Gordon equation are separable. It can be interpreted to describe the gravitational field of a rotating dyon, a particle endowed with both gravoelectric (mass) and gravomagnetic (NUT parameter) charges. Further, there also exists a duality relation between the two charges and the radial and the polar angle coordinates which keeps the solution invariant. The solution can however be transformed into the known Kerr - NUT solution indicating its uniqueness under the separability of equations of motion.

In analogy with the electromagnetic theory, we resolve the Riemann curvature into electric and magnetic parts and consider the analogous duality transformation which keeps the Einstein action for vacuum invariant. It is remarkable that the duality symmetry of the action also leads to the vacuum field equation without cosmological constant. Further invariance of the vacuum equation and the action under the gravito-electric duality require gravitational constant to change sign.

The higher-dimensional Einstein vacuum equation with Λ-term is shown to be conformally equivalent to the four-dimensional field equation of scale-invariant fourth-order gravity. This holds for a general warped product between space-time and internal space of arbitrary dimension m which turns out to be an Einstein space. (The limit m → ∞ makes sense!) Thus, the results concerning the attractor property of the power-law inflationary solution derived for fourth-order gravity hold for the Kaluza-Klein model, too.
