Abstract This study investigates the mechanical response of aluminum foam sandwich panels, sandwich cylindrical shells, and sandwich shallow shells under impact loads. First, a finite element model of the sandwich panel was established, and an impact load was applied. The numerical results were compared with theoretical and experimental results to verify the model's effectiveness. Second, the energy absorption efficiency and overall deformation of sandwich panels, sandwich cylindrical shells, and sandwich shallow shells under the same impact load were studied. The research shows that the energy absorption performance of the sandwich shells is better than that of the sandwich panels, and the overall deformation is less than that of the sandwich panels. The effect of increasing panel thickness on the two types of sandwich shell studies is based on this basis. The conclusions describe that increasing the panel thickness will significantly reduce the structure's energy absorption efficiency and deformation. Finally, the effect of single-and double-layer structure on the impact resistance of sandwich shells was studied when the total thickness of the sandwich structure was unchanged. The results show that compared with the single-layer structure, the energy absorption efficiency, overall deformation, and contact force between the projectile and structure of the double-layer structure will be reduced.

Present paper has experimentally and numerically investigated the mechanical behavior of composite sandwich panel with novel M-shaped lattice core subjected to three-point bending and compressive loads. For this purpose, a composite sandwich panel with M-shaped core made of carbon fiber has been fabricated in this experiment. In order to fabricate the sandwich panels, the vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) has been used to achieve a laminate without any fault. Afterward, polyurethane foam with density of 80 kg/m3 has been injected into the core of the sandwich panel. Then, a unique design was presented to sandwich panel cores. The study of force-displacement curves obtained from sandwich panel compression and three-point bending tests, showed that an optimum mechanical strength with a considerable lightweight. It should be noted that the experimental data was compared to numerical simulation in ABAQUS software. According to the results, polyurethane foam has improved the flexural strength of sandwich panels by 14% while this improvement for compressive strength is equal to 23%. As well as, it turned out that numerical results are in good agreement with experimental ones and make it possible to use simulation instead of time-consuming experimental procedures for design and analysis.

Architectured structures, particularly auxetic materials, have demonstrated encouraging applications in energy absorption as they facilitate the customization of their structural response. Specific geometries of unit cells can thus be tailored for particular needs due to recent progress in additive manufacturing techniques. This paper experimentally studies how the grading of the cell unit angle of an auxetic core in a sandwich panel affects its energy absorbing capability and structural response. 3D printed sandwich panels with uniform and graded auxetic cellular core were tested under quasistatic compression. The results show that sandwich panels with graded core exhibit much better energy absorption capabilities with higher plateau stress and densification strain. This indicates that, by appropriately controlling its geometry, auxetic structures can show further potential as core in sandwich panels for energy absorption applications.
