In this study, with the objective to develop a reliability-based seismic design tool, ductility and dissipated hysteretic energy uniform annual failure rate (UAFR) spectra are obtained and compared using the spectral acceleration at first mode of vibration of the structure Sa(T1) and the well-known spectral shape-based intensity measure INp. Notice that this is the first time in the literature that UAFR spectra are obtained for the advanced spectral shape intensity measure INp. For this aim, 110 simulated ground motions recorded from the soft soil of Mexico City were selected due to their large energy amount demanded to the structures; moreover, four elastoplastic hysteretic behavior models are considered for the dynamic analyses with post-yielding stiffness of 0, 3, 5, and 10%. It is observed that the use of elasto-perfectly plastic models provided similar UAFR spectra in comparison with hysteretic models with different post-yielding stiffness. This conclusion is valid for the two selected intensity measures. In addition, the lateral resistance required to achieve similar structural reliability levels is larger when the INp intensity measure is used, especially for buildings with vibration periods equal or larger than the soil period, in such a way that the traditional use of Sa(T1) could provide structures with less structural reliability levels.

Abstract Arias intensity is an essential ground motion measure correlating with the potential for earthquake-induced landslides. The Sichuan-Yunnan region, which is primarily mountainous, is a high incidence region of earthquake-induced landslides in China. However, there is no available attenuation relationship for this intensity measure due to the backward construction of the stations. In this study, we developed a region-specific Arias intensity attenuation relationship using the China Strong-Motion Networks Center (CSMNC) database which was established in 2008. We recommend this relationship be applied in the Sichuan-Yunnan region for moment magnitudes ranging between 4.2 and 7.9, distances ranging between 0 and 400 km and with Vs30 (the average shear-wave velocity in the upper 30 meters of a soil profile) ranging between 128 and 760 m/s. The current study finds that this relationship’s intra-event, inter-event, and total standard deviations are greater than for other regions. This is likely caused by the complicated seismotectonic activities, nonlinear site effects, error from inferring Vs30, basin effects, etc. However, this relationship has the best performance in fitting and predicting the data from the Sichuan-Yunnan region.

Abstract Objective To investigate whether intensity of work as a hairdresser was associated with treatments for pain, and if musculoskeletal pain was associated with leaving the hairdressing trade. Methods We formed two cohorts of hairdressers covered in the PensionDanmark Health Scheme (PDHS). Cohort 1 consisted of 1304 active hairdressers in 2009. Self-reported weekly haircuts were used as work intensity measure and treatments for pain in the neck and shoulders in PDHS were used as outcome. We used a Cox regression model with robust sandwich estimates adjusted for age, sex, employment status and prior treatment < 1 year before July 2009. Cohort 2 consisted of all hairdressers ever covered in the PDHS from 2006 to 2016 (n = 11,162). Exposure were treatments in PDHS within the last year. Outcome was leaving the trade within the following year. Adjustments were made for sex, calendar-year and age in Cox regression models. Results The adjusted hazard ratio of treatments in PDHS compared to the lowest work intensity was 0.95 (95% CI 0.58–1.55) and 0.74 (0.43–1.29) for medium and highest intensity, respectively. The risk of leaving the trade was lower, HR 0.80 (0.72–0.90) among hairdressers with treatments in PDHS within the last year, mainly driven by hairdressers aged < 56 years. Conclusion We found no association between intensity of work as a hairdresser, measured as self-reported weekly haircuts, and treatments for pain in PDHS. Furthermore, we found a protective effect of treatments in the PDHS within the last year on risk of leaving the trade.
