Abstract Arias intensity is an essential ground motion measure correlating with the potential for earthquake-induced landslides. The Sichuan-Yunnan region, which is primarily mountainous, is a high incidence region of earthquake-induced landslides in China. However, there is no available attenuation relationship for this intensity measure due to the backward construction of the stations. In this study, we developed a region-specific Arias intensity attenuation relationship using the China Strong-Motion Networks Center (CSMNC) database which was established in 2008. We recommend this relationship be applied in the Sichuan-Yunnan region for moment magnitudes ranging between 4.2 and 7.9, distances ranging between 0 and 400 km and with Vs30 (the average shear-wave velocity in the upper 30 meters of a soil profile) ranging between 128 and 760 m/s. The current study finds that this relationship’s intra-event, inter-event, and total standard deviations are greater than for other regions. This is likely caused by the complicated seismotectonic activities, nonlinear site effects, error from inferring Vs30, basin effects, etc. However, this relationship has the best performance in fitting and predicting the data from the Sichuan-Yunnan region.

Abstract Based on macroseismic survey data for strong earthquakes in Central Asia, the coefficients of attenuation of seismic intensities with distance in the Blake-Shebalin- and Kovesligethy -type equations were refined. A new generalized dependence of macroseismic intensity attenuation on distance, taking into account the depth of the earthquake hypocentre, were obtained. Relations between the minor and major axes of the ellipse approximating real isoseists depending on the shaking strength, source depth and earthquake magnitude were found. With the example of the territory of eastern Uzbekistan, the influence of the choice of the law of seismic intensity attenuation with distance on the obtained seismic hazard assessments is investigated.

To study the wind field characteristics near the ground pulsation in typhoon conditions, wind field conditions in the area affected by Typhoon “Fung-Wong” were monitored using wind field instruments installed in the construction building of Wenzhou University, China. Real-time wind field data were collected during typhoons. Wind characteristic parameters such as mean wind speed, wind direction angle, turbulence intensity, gust factor, peak factor, coherence function, and autocorrelation were analyzed, and the wind field characteristics during the typhoon were summarized. The results indicated that the longitudinal and lateral turbulence intensities decreased with an increase in the mean wind speed, and there was an obvious linear relationship between them. The vertical and horizontal gust factor and peak factor decreased with an increase in mean wind speed, and the trend was more obvious in the horizontal direction. There was a significant correlation between the gust factor and the peak factor. The turbulence intensity and gust factor decreased with time, and the turbulence intensity attenuation speed increased with time. The empirical curve presented by Davenport (1961) can simulate the correlation characteristics of the fluctuating wind speed components of Typhoon Fung-Wong at some measuring points. With an increase in the time difference, the dependence of the instantaneous values at the two time points gradually decreased.

Abstract With the characteristics of full autonomy and no accumulated errors, polarisation navigation shows tremendous prospects in underwater scenarios. In this paper, inspired by the polarisation vision of aquatic organisms, a novel point-source polarisation sensor with high spectral adaptability (400 nm–760 nm) is designed for underwater orientation. To enhance the environmental applicability of the underwater polarisation sensor, a novel sensor model based on the underwater light intensity attenuation coefficient and optical coupling coefficient is established. In addition, concerned with the influence of light intensity uncertainty on sensor performance underwater, an antagonistic polarisation algorithm is adopted for the first time, to improve the accuracy of angle of polarisation and degree of polarisation in the low signal-to-noise ratio environment underwater. Finally, indoor and outdoor experiments are carried out to evaluate the performance of the designed polarisation sensor. The results show that the designed point-source polarisation sensor can acquire polarised light and be used for heading determination underwater.

This paper aims at describing Javanese reduplication system with focus of attention on forms, functions, and grammatical meanings. By using data extracted from Javanese text books and  ones of my own creation  whose grammaticalty and acceptability are previously tested with several native speakers,  through distributional method with its various technical analysis,  the research found that Javanese reduplication can be classified  into at least four linguistic forms. Those are full reduplication, partial reduplication, sound modification reduplication, and  affix-combined reduplication. Javanese reduplication can either perform inflective or derivative function in relation to its potentiality to maintain and change the word identity. Finally, with regard to the grammatical meanings, Javanese  reduplication at least can express eleven grammatical meanings, i.e. plurality, diversity, continuity,  intensity, attenuation,  reciprocity,  artificiality, collectivity, rate, astonishment and contrast. Many of these grammatical meanings are context sensitive.

Laser lighting systems in comparison with traditional submarine devices in the form of spotlights have a significant advantage. Their use provides an increase in the distance of underwater vision of television systems in underwater robotic complexes and, as a result, increasing their search efficiency. The article is aimed at examining the potential of laser illuminators optimal application by taking into account the hydrooptical characteristics of aqueous media affecting the weakening of the light flux generated by it, and the wavelength of the laser radiation. The results of studies presented on graphs and in tables make it possible to provide the arguments for the idea of the expediency of transition to laser technologies to optimize the underwater search of objects at any operating depths.
