To compare two magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) sequences at 3 Tesla (3T): the conventional 3D Respiratory-Triggered SPACE sequence (RT-MRCP) and a prototype 3D Compressed-Sensing Breath-Hold SPACE sequence (CS-BH-MRCP), in terms of qualitative and quantitative image quality and radiologist’s diagnostic confidence for detecting common bile duct (CBD) lithiasis, biliary anastomosis stenosis in liver-transplant recipients, and communication of pancreatic cyst with the main pancreatic duct (MPD). Sixty-eight patients with suspicion of choledocholithiasis or biliary anastomosis stenosis after liver transplant, or branch-duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas (BD-IPMN), were included. The relative CBD to peri-biliary tissues (PBT) contrast ratio (CR) was assessed. Overall image quality, presence of artefacts, background noise suppression and the visualization of 12 separated segments of the pancreatic and bile ducts were evaluated by two observers working independently on a five-point scale. Diagnostic confidence was scored on a 1–3 scale. The CS-BH-MRCP presented significantly better CRs (p < 0.0001), image quality (p = 0.004), background noise suppression (p = 0.011), fewer artefacts (p = 0.004) and better visualization of pancreatic and bile ducts segments with the exception of the proximal CBD (p = 0.054), cystic duct confluence (p = 0.459), the four secondary intrahepatic bile ducts, and central part of the MPD (p = 0.885) for which no significant differences were found. Overall, diagnostic confidence was significantly better with the CS-BH-MRCP sequence for both readers (p = 0.038 and p = 0.038, respectively). This study shows that the CS-BH-MRCP sequence presents overall better image quality and bile and pancreatic ducts visualization compared to the conventional RT-MRCP sequence at 3T.

The impairment of microvessels can lead to neurologic diseases such as stroke and vascular dementia. The imaging of lumen and vessel wall of perforating arteries requires an extremely high resolution due to their small caliber size. Current imaging techniques have the difficulty in observing the wall of perforating arteries. In this study, we developed a 3D inner-volume (IV) TSE (SPACE) sequence with optimized 2D spatially selective excitation (SSE) RF pulses. The optimized SSE RF pulses were designed through a series of optimization including iterative RF pulse design, trajectory optimization, and phase convention of Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) condition to meet the perforating arteries imaging demands. High resolution of isotropic 0.30 mm within 10 min was achieved for the black- blood images of lenticulostriate artery (LSA). The LSA lumen and vessel wall were imaged by the IV-SPACE sequence simultaneously. Images obtained by the optimized RF pulse has fewer aliasing artifacts from outside of ROI than the traditional pulse. The IV-SPACE images showed clearer delineation of vessel wall and lumen of LSA than conventional SPACE images. IV-SPACE might be a promising method for detecting microvasculopathies of cerebral vascular diseases.

We discuss four major prebiotic ‘discoveries’: persistent sampling of chemical reaction space; sequence-encodable foldable catalysts; assembly of functional pathways; and encapsulation and heritability. We describe how a ‘proteins-first’ world gives plausible mechanisms. We note the importance of hydrophobic and polar compositions of matter in these advances.

A complete scientific system of earthquake prediction has yet to be developed, and most studies on the time–space sequence of seismic activity analysis are based on existing seismic models. By applying fractal theory with the two aspects of magnitude and intensity, a new dimension is added. In this study, we applied multifractal theory to analyse data of the Circum-Pacific seismic belt, which contains multifractal spectrums such as the relation, relation, and relation. The results suggest that earthquakes in the area which we studied contain multifractal features. The study also shows that the time–space propagation characteristics of the earthquakes are affected by the internal geological structures of the region and the adjacent area.

Object: Follow-up evaluation of intracranial aneurysms treated by flow-diverting stents using MRI is challenging due to the presence of imaging artifacts. This study evaluated 3D T1-SPACE in combination with 3D-TOF sequence for follow-up evaluation of intracranial aneurysms treated with Pipeline embolization devices.Methods: Forty patients with 53 intracranial aneurysms who were treated with Pipeline Embolization Devices from October 2018 to July 2019 were enrolled in this study. All patients were evaluated for aneurysm occlusion and stent patency 4 to 7 months post-treatment using 3D T1-SPACE sequence, 3D-TOF MRA, and DSA examinations.Results: With regards to aneurysm occlusion, the intermodality (DSA and 3D-TOF MRA) agreement was good (κ = 0.755). The specificity of 3D-TOF MRA was 94.4% (34/36), the sensitivity was 76.5% (13/17), the total coincidence rate was 88.7% (47/53). With regards to the patency of the stented arteries after PED treatment, 3D T1-SPACE sequence was more accurate compared to 3D-TOF MRA (Z = −6.283, P &lt; 0.001), with a no-artifact rate of 95.7% (44/46).Conclusions: 3D T1-SPACE sequence provides better image quality and higher accuracy for evaluating stented parent arteries compared to TOF-MRA. 3D-TOF MRA may be valuable in the evaluation of aneurysm occlusion. The combination of these two modalities may be used for long-term follow-up of intracranial aneurysms treated with Pipeline Embolization Devices.
