The movement of migrant domestic workers constitutes an important aspect of migration flows in Asia. We identify and outline three major research gaps in this area: (1) their unique working environment and the consequences of working under these conditions, (2) formal and informal sources of support, and (3) policies implemented by local government in response to the working environment of migrant domestic workers. We discuss how the articles in this special issue address these major gaps in migration research.

Nurses’ presenteeism surveys are essential in order for a healthcare organization to obtain a comprehensive understanding pertaining to the nurses’ problem and also their needs regarding the relationship between elements of nature of work, social support, physical work environment and social status with presenteeism. A study is a vital tool to investigate the relationship between elements of nature of work, social support, physical work environment and social status which leads to the frequency of presenteeism among nurses in the hospital. This study was a correlational research about the relationship between elements of nature of work, social support, physical work environment and social status with presenteeism among nurses in government hospital at Perlis and Kedah state. A convenience sampling technique was used and 120 respondents were statistically calculated. Only respondents who nurses served treatment and care in government hospital at Perlis and Kedah state were included in this study. The components of presenteeism study were the socio-demographic characteristics, the elements of nature of work, social support, physical work environment and social status as well as nurses’ presenteeism. This study aimed to find the significant relationship between independent and dependent variables. It was revealed that the elements of nature of work, social support, physical work environment and social status were lead to presenteeism among nurses in government hospital at Perlis and Kedah state. Besides, there are some aspects that should be considered by government hospital at Perlis and Kedah state in order to knowledgeable the frequency of presenteeism among their nurses. Since nurses’ presenteeism seems to be the most important element in Perlis and Kedah state, it is beneficial for the hospital management to encourage their nurse to pretend good and excellent without poor health condition and decreases the frequency of presenteeism with the elements of nature of work, social support, physical work environment and social status.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose a research model in which work engagement (WE) mediates the influence of work social support on job satisfaction (JS), in-role performance (IRP), creative performance (CP) and extra-role performance (ERP). Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from cabin attendants via three surveys two weeks apart and their pursers. The aforesaid relationships were assessed through structural equation modeling. Findings In general, there is support for the preponderance of hypotheses. Specifically, WE completely mediates the impact of coworker support on JS and IRP, while the impact of supervisor support on CP is completely mediated by WE. WE partly mediates the effect of coworker support on CP and ERP. Furthermore, the effect of supervisor support on JS, IRP and ERP is partly mediated by WE. Practical implications Management should make sure that the work environment consists of supportive supervisors and coworkers who are trained on how they can enhance the cooperation and collaboration among employees. Management should also create an employee platform where cabin attendants can contribute to service delivery process by sharing their experiences arising from passenger requests and problems. Originality/value The study extends and contributes to the current service research by assessing the impact of WE simultaneously on three performance outcomes. The study adds to current knowledge by investigating the mediating mechanism linking work social support to the attitudinal and behavioral outcomes. The study also controls the threat of common method variance with at least two procedural remedies, which have been rarely used in the current service research.
