Abstract Engineering quantum states through light-matter interaction has created a new paradigm in condensed matter physics. A representative example is the Floquet-Bloch state, which is generated by time-periodically driving the Bloch wavefunctions in crystals. Previous attempts to realise such states in condensed matter systems have been limited by the transient nature of the Floquet states produced by optical pulses, which masks the universal properties of non-equilibrium physics. Here, we report the generation of steady Floquet Andreev (F-A) states in graphene Josephson junctions by continuous microwave application and direct measurement of their spectra by superconducting tunnelling spectroscopy. We present quantitative analysis of the spectral characteristics of the F-A states while varying the phase difference of superconductors, temperature, microwave frequency and power. The oscillations of the F-A state spectrum with phase difference agreed with our theoretical calculations. Moreover, we confirmed the steady nature of the F-A states by establishing a sum rule of tunnelling conductance, and analysed the spectral density of Floquet states depending on Floquet interaction strength. This study provides a basis for understanding and engineering non-equilibrium quantum states in nano-devices.

The invention of the maser stimulated revolutionary technologies such as lasers and atomic clocks. Yet, realizations of masers are still limited; in particular, the physics of masers remains unexplored in periodically driven (Floquet) systems, which are generally defined by time-periodic Hamiltonians and enable observation of many exotic phenomena such as time crystals. Here, we investigate the Floquet system of periodically driven 129Xe gas under damping feedback and unexpectedly observe a multimode maser that oscillates at frequencies of transitions between Floquet states. Our findings extend maser techniques to Floquet systems and open avenues to probe Floquet phenomena unaffected by decoherence, enabling a previously unexplored class of maser sensors. As a first application, our maser offers the capability of measuring low-frequency (1 to 100 mHz) magnetic fields with subpicotesla-level sensitivity, which is substantially better than state-of-the-art magnetometers and can be applied to, for example, ultralight dark matter searches.

Abstract Floquet states are a topic of intense contemporary interest, which is often induced by coherent external oscillating perturbation (e.g., laser, or microwave) which breaks the continuous time translational symmetry of the systems. Usually, electron–phonon coupling modifies the electronic structure of a crystal as a non-coherent perturbation and seems difficult to form Floquet states. Surprisingly, we found that the thermal equilibrium electron–phonon coupling in M(MoS)3 and M(MoSe)3 (where M is a metallic element) exhibits a coherent behavior, and the electronic structure can be described by the Floquet theorem. Such a coherent Floquet state is caused by a selective giant electron–phonon coupling, with thermodynamic phonon oscillation serving as a driving force on the electronic part of the system. The quasi-1D Dirac cone at the Fermi energy has its band gap open and close regularly. Similarly, the electric current will oscillate even under a constant voltage.

AbstractA variational principle enabling one to compute individual Floquet states of a periodically time-dependent quantum system is formulated, and successfully tested against the benchmark system provided by the analytically solvable model of a linearly driven harmonic oscillator. The principle is particularly well suited for tracing individual Floquet states through parameter space, and may allow one to obtain Floquet states even for very high-dimensional systems which cannot be treated by the known standard numerical methods.
