The specific loading-path change during sheet metal forming may lead to some abnormal deformation phenomena. Two-stage orthogonal loading paths without elastic unloading have revealed a phenomenon of apparent loss of normality, further modeled in the literature by non-normality theories. In this paper, a particular orthogonal strain-path change is investigated using the Teodosiu–Hu hardening rule within an associated plasticity framework. The results indicate that cross work-hardening has a significant contribution to the apparent loss of normality and subsequent asymmetric yield surface evolution. Detailed contributions of the model’s ingredients and features are clarified. The developed material model is intended for sheet metal forming simulation applications.


Single point incremental sheet metal forming has passed through a period of ample improvement with developing responsiveness from research societies and industries globally. The process has expressively spared the practice of using costly dies, which makes it an appropriate process for manufacturing prototypes and small batch production. It also discovers easiness in fabricating components of timeworn equipment. Additionally, in recent years, aluminum alloys become the most commonly used materials in the automotive, aeronautics, and transportation industries for their structural and other applications. The effect of various process parameters on the formability of Single Point Incremental Forming of aluminum alloys has been critically surveyed. Ultimately, this article also debated the dares associated with the Single Point Incremental Forming process and recommended some correlated research regions which probably charm significant research considerations in the future.

To simulate sheet metal forming processes precisely, an in-house dynamic explicit code was developed to apply a new solid-shell element to sheet metal forming analyses, with a corotational coordinate system utilized to simplify the nonlinearity and to integrate the element with anisotropic constitutive laws. The enhancing parameter of the solid-shell element, implemented to circumvent the volumetric and thickness locking phenomena, was condensed into an explicit form. To avoid the rank deficiency, a modified physical stabilization involving the B-bar method and reconstruction of transverse shear components was adopted. For computational efficiency of the solid-shell element in numerical applications, an adaptive mesh subdivision scheme was developed, with element geometry and contact condition taken as subdivision criteria. To accurately capture the anisotropic behavior of sheet metals, material models with three different anisotropic yield functions were incorporated. Several numerical examples were carried out to validate the accuracy of the proposed element and the efficiency of the adaptive mesh subdivision.
