In order to study the influence of elevation on the slake durability index of the quartz mica schist, the quartz mica schist with different elevations on the east slope of the Manjiazhai open-pit mine is taken as the research object, and based on laboratory tests and statistical analysis, the variation of negative correlation between the slake durability index and elevation is obtained. The disintegration mechanism of quartz mica schist at different elevations is also discussed. The test results show that the disintegration characteristics of quartz mica schist at different elevations are related to its mineral composition, fissure channel size, and rock damage effect. As the slope height increases, the ratio of mica to quartz in the rock increases, and the greater the porosity of the rock, the more fissures in the rock, the greater the permeability coefficient, and the more obvious the change of effective stress of rock under osmotic pressure. At the same time, the higher the slope elevation of open-pit mine, the longer the weathering time of rock, the higher the cumulative damage of rock, and the lower the rock slake durability index. This study provides a new idea for guiding the research on the disintegration characteristics of similar soft rock slopes in the elevation direction.

Several attraction places and agriculture area that essentials for tourism and villager to do their activities are located approximately 6 km along the road of Candi Ijo to Ngoro-Oro in between Prambanan and Patuk sub-districts, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Many jointed rock masses along the road have the potential to fail. This paper describes the rock mass characteristic and quality determined using the Geological Strength Index (GSI) and Rock Mass Rating (RMR) classifications. The rock mass characteristic and quality were essentially the preliminary results of a study to evaluate stability of the rock slopes along the road of Candi Ijo to Ngoro-Oro. Field observation and laboratory tests were carried out to determine parameters of the GSI and RMR.  The results show that the slopes in the study area consisted of tuffaceous sandstone, vitric tuff, lithic tuff, cemented tuffaceous sandstone, lapilli tuff, subarkose, laminated mudrock, and laminated tuffaceous sandstone. The intact rocks were classified as weak to very strong. The research area consisted of three rock mass qualities, namely fair rock mass quality having GSI between 30 and 45 and RMR between 41 and 60,  good rock mass quality having GSI between 46 to 65 and RMR between 61 and 80, and very good rock mass quality having GSI > 65 and RMR between 81-100. The relationship between GSI and RMR obtained in this study was in good agreement with that proposed by Hoek et al. (1995).

The construction of the Tugu Dam spillway does not escape the problem of slope instability, especially the rock fall type landslide as a result of the rock slope cutting work at STA+80. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of the rock discontinuity area and the solutions needed to address the potential hazards of rock fall on the slopes of spillway structure. In this study, a semi-quantitative method conducted based on the Rockfall Hazard Rating System (RHRS) which is carried out by identifying outcrops on rock slopes. Determination of the rock fall trajectory, was conducted by statistical methods on rock mass based on changes in velocity when rocks roll, slide, and bounce. Geologically, the research area belongs to the Mandalika Formation. Based on the RHRS weighting, the total score on the STA+80 slope is 399, which means that the slope needs to be repaired or given safely with a moderate level of urgency. The rock fall trajectory modeling at the measurement location X = 121,875 has a kinetic energy of 973.14 kJ andesite and 72.59 kJ of volcanic breccia, for high results of 0.43 meters of andesite reflection and 2.04 meters of volcanic breccia, and velocity results translational velocity obtained at 33.8 m/s andesite and 8.67 m/s volcanic breccia. The potential for rock fall requires a safety system with a type of retained flexible barriers with a height of 5 meters that can be applied to the toe of the slope. Keywords: rock fall, discontinuity, trajectory, protection system, Tugu Dam

In order to better understand the dynamic response and failure modes of rock slopes containing weak interlayers subjected to earthquake excitation, a series of numerical simulations were carried out using the continuum-discontinuum element method (CDEM), considering the influence of seismic amplitude and weak interlayers inclination. The seismic response characteristics of slopes were systematically analyzed according to the waveform characteristics, amplification effect, equivalent crack ratio, etc. The numerical results show that the acceleration waveform characteristics and peak ground displacement (PGD) amplification coefficient have good correspondence with the dynamic failure process of landslides. Comprehensive analysis of waveform characteristics and PGD amplification coefficient can determine the damage time, damage location, and damage degree of landslides. The landslide process can be divided into three stages according to the equivalent crack ratio: rapid generation of a large number of microcracks, expansion and aggregation of microcracks, and penetration of micro-cracks and the formation of slip surfaces. The equivalent crack ratio provides a new idea for evaluating slope stability. In addition, under the combination of different amplitudes and weak interlayers, these earthquake-induced landslides exhibit different failure modes: the failure of the gentle-dip slope is mainly local rockfall; The mid-dip and steep-dip slopes with small amplitudes experience “tensile cracking-slip-collapsing” failure; The steep-dip slopes under strong earthquake failed in the form of “tensile cracking-slip-slope extrusion-collapsing”. The research results are of great significance for a deeper understanding of the formation mechanism of rock landslides with weak interlayers and the prevention of such landslide disasters.
