Automatic extraction of road information from remote sensing images is widely used in many fields, such as urban planning and automatic navigation. However, due to interference from noise and occlusion, the existing road extraction methods can easily lead to road discontinuity. To solve this problem, a road extraction network with bidirectional spatial information reasoning (BSIRNet) is proposed, in which neighbourhood feature fusion is used to capture spatial context dependencies and expand the receptive field, and an information processing unit with a recurrent neural network structure is used to capture channel dependencies. BSIRNet enhances the connectivity of road information through spatial information reasoning. Using the public Massachusetts road dataset and Wuhan University road dataset, the superiority of the proposed method is verified by comparing its results with those of other models.

Efficient and accurate road extraction from remote sensing imagery is important for applications related to navigation and Geographic Information System updating. Existing data-driven methods based on semantic segmentation recognize roads from images pixel by pixel, which generally uses only local spatial information and causes issues of discontinuous extraction and jagged boundary recognition. To address these problems, we propose a cascaded attention-enhanced architecture to extract boundary-refined roads from remote sensing images. Our proposed architecture uses spatial attention residual blocks on multi-scale features to capture long-distance relations and introduce channel attention layers to optimize the multi-scale features fusion. Furthermore, a lightweight encoder-decoder network is connected to adaptively optimize the boundaries of the extracted roads. Our experiments showed that the proposed method outperformed existing methods and achieved state-of-the-art results on the Massachusetts dataset. In addition, our method achieved competitive results on more recent benchmark datasets, e.g., the DeepGlobe and the Huawei Cloud road extraction challenge.

Road extraction is important for road network renewal, intelligent transportation systems and smart cities. This paper proposes an effective method to improve road extraction accuracy and reconstruct the broken road lines caused by ground occlusion. Firstly, an attention mechanism-based convolution neural network is established to enhance feature extraction capability. By highlighting key areas and restraining interference features, the road extraction accuracy is improved. Secondly, for the common broken road problem in the extraction results, a heuristic method based on connected domain analysis is proposed to reconstruct the road. An experiment is carried out on a benchmark dataset to prove the effectiveness of this method, and the result is compared with that of several famous deep learning models including FCN8s, SegNet, U-Net and D-Linknet. The comparison shows that this model increases the IOU value and the F1 score by 3.35–12.8% and 2.41–9.8%, respectively. Additionally, the result proves the proposed method is effective at extracting roads from occluded areas.

3D GIS has attracted increasing attention from academics, industries, and governments with the increase in the requirements for the interoperability and integration of different sources of spatial data. Three-dimensional road extraction based on multisource remote sensing data is still a challenging task due to road occlusion and topological complexity. This paper presents a novel framework for 3D road extraction by integrating LiDAR point clouds and high-resolution remote sensing imagery. First, a multiscale collaborative representation-based road probability estimation method was proposed to segment road surfaces from high-resolution remote sensing imagery. Then, an automatic stratification process was conducted to specify the layer values of each road segment. Additionally, a multifactor filtering strategy was proposed in consideration of the complexity of ground features and the existence of noise in LiDAR points. Lastly, a least-square-based elevation interpolation method is used for restoring the elevation information of road sections blocked by overpasses. The experimental results based on two datasets in Hong Kong Island show that the proposed method obtains competitively satisfactory results.
