To relieve the contradiction between supply and demand, a multi-port power conditioner (MP-PC) and control strategy with renewable energy access for a railway traction system is presented, which is mainly composed of full-bridge-based MMC and isolated DC/DC converters. As for the full-bridge-based MMC, the equivalent model is established and its novel voltage control method is proposed, which can provide a medium/low-voltage DC-link. A renewable energy system is connected to the system through the DC-link, so the MP-PC can achieve on-site consumption and balance between the load power and output power of RESs. Meanwhile, with the proposed control strategy, MP-PC can achieve three-phase power balance control and improve the operation performance of the railway traction system. Finally, the traction power platform and simulation model are established in the lab, and the topology and control strategy of MP-PC are verified effectively.

Rail power conditioner (RPC) has the ability to improve the power quality in AC railway power grids. This power conditioner can increase the loading capacity of traction substations, balance the active power between the feeder load sections, and compensate for reactive power and current harmonics. At present, there is increasing use of multilevel converter topologies, which provide scalability and robust performance under different conditions. In this framework, modular multilevel converter (MMC) is emerging as a prominent solution for medium-voltage applications. Serving that purpose, this paper focuses on the implementation, testing, and validation of a reduced-scale laboratory prototype of a proposed RPC based on an MMC. The developed laboratory prototype, designed to be compact, reliable, and adaptable to multipurpose applications, is presented, highlighting the main control and power circuit boards of the MMC. In addition, MMC parameter design of the filter inductor and submodule capacitor is also explained. Experimental analysis and validation of a reduced-scale prototype RPC based on MMC topology, are provided to verify the power quality improvement in electrified railway power grids. Thus, two experimental case studies are presented: (1) when both of the load sections are unequally loaded; (2) when only one load section is loaded. Experimental results confirm the RPC based on MMC is effective in reducing the harmonic contents, solving the problem of three-phase current imbalance and compensating reactive power.

DC microgrid has been gaining popularity as solution as a more efficient and simpler power system especially for remote areas, where the main grid has yet to be built. This paper proposes a DC microgrid system based on renewable energy sources that employs decentralized control and without communication between one grid point and another. It can be deployed as an individual isolated unit or to form an expandable DC microgrid through DC bus for better reliability and efficiency. The key element of the proposed system is the power conditioner system (PCS) that works as an interface between energy sources, storage system, and load. PCS consists of modular power electronics devices and a power management unit, which controls power delivery to the AC load and the grid as well as the storage system charging and discharging sequence. Prototypes with 3 kWp solar PV and 13.8 kWh energy storage were developed and adopt a pole-mounted structure for ease of transportation and installation that are important in remote areas. This paper presents measurement results under several conditions of the developed prototypes. The evaluation shows promising results and a solid basis for electrification in remote areas.

The spatial high-resolution synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for ocean exploration puts forward higher requirement for output power and amplitude-phase consistency of the pulsed TWT amplifier. The kW class pulsed TWT amplifier based on broadband power combining is the key technology for space SAR applications. In this paper, the factors affecting the amplitude and phase consistency of MPM are studied, and a phase consistency compensation circuit was designed to improve the phase consistency of multiple sets of products. A microwave power model (MPM) with dual TWTs output integrated architecture was proposed which consists of two short travelling wave tubes (TWT), two solid-state power amplifiers (SSPA), and an electronic power conditioner (EPC). More than 45% efficiency is achieved in 15% duty cycle within 600 MHz bandwidth, and the phase consistency was less than ± 5 degrees. With the improvement of synthesis efficiency, higher synthesis power and higher sensitivity of ocean wide scanning and detection can be obtained
