A 460 m long profile of the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–T) boundary strata at Stevns Klint was measured by the late Professor A. Rosenkrantz probably in 1944. The measured profile was inherited by Finn Surlyk around 1974 together with other original boundary data. This material was dug up in a long-forgotten drawer in connection with detailed field work by the co-authors on the boundary succession in the late spring and summer of 2021. The profile illustrates the stratigraphy, geometry and palaeotopography of the boundary strata in unprecedented detail. The part of the cliff illustrated in the profile is today partly covered by beach ridges composed of flint rubble but is situated below the finest section of the lower Danian bryozoan mounds exposed at Stevns Klint. This coastal section is situated immediately adjacent to a large limestone quarry and was planned to be quarried away around 1937, but was saved by A. Rosenkrantz who demonstrated its great scientific and educational value to the authorities.

Purpose. Blasting is an important aspect of mining activities in which fragmentation is the key component that determines its efficiency. Fragmentation is the first result of blasting, and is directly related to the costs of mining. Methods. There are two basic methods for determining the degree of rock fragmentation, the direct and indirect methods. The direct method includes sieve analysis while the indirect method involves observational, empirical and digital image processing methods. The digital image processing method with the aid of Split Desktop software was used in this study, to analyze the size of fragmentation in Obajana limestone quarry. Two pits of similar line of operation were considered. Findings. In each of the pits considered, five muckpiles of blasted rocks after blasting with different blasting patterns were analyzed to study the fragmentation phenomenon. The F80 and F90 values from the Split Desktop image analysis for the 5×3 m and 4×3 m in Pit 1 and Pit 2 were approximately 87.96 and 96.20 cm; and 91.34 and 98.66 cm respectively. Also, the F80 and F90 values obtained from the Kuz-Ram model for the 5×3 m and 4×3 m of Pit 1and Pit 2 were 99.9967 and 99.9994 cm; and 99.9957 and 99.9993 cm respectively. The results of the Split Desktop were compared to the results of the Kuz-Ram experiential model. The values of F80 and F90 of the blasted rocks are very close to the crusher gape value of 1 m, which reduces the production costs, and that is an outcome practically realized for the two pits of Obajana quarry. Originality. The findings showed that the output obtained from the Split Desktop software which is a digital image processing method were in conformity with the Kuz-Ram experiential model which is based on empirical relationship. Practical implications. In conclusion, the results of the investigation have significant implications for the practical application. It gives more options to explore for rock blast fragmentation efficiency of the desired area.

The rooting, the survival and dynamics of growths in the height and after the diameter of the seedlings, of a range of woody species, had investigated on the freshly formed sterile dump limestone quarry „Lafarge Ciment”. The seedlings of the woody species had a relatively good rooting (69-99%). A high degree of rooting can be ensured as a result of the maintenance of forest crops. After planting, the young seedlings must be cared for by hoeing as many times as necessary in order to control the weeds and maintain moisture in the soil, which increases the survival of the seedlings. Tree species have been characterized by a different growth rate. Acacia has showed a very rapid increase in height, but the black pine has been characterized by a slow growth. Acacia being a fast-growing species and unpretentious to the mineral elements in the soil can be used to afforest the limestone quarry land. In the fi rst year after planting, the young seedlings, otherwise sensitive to the action of the environmental factors, had an increase in height and in diameter slow and uneven. In the years that followed, the seedlings became more viable and less infl uenced by local and temporal fl uctuations of environmental factors.

Abstract At the beginning of this article, the main historical milestones of Povážská cementáreň (cement plant) Ladce, a.s. (PCLA) are presented. The main parameters of the Butkov quarry are also specified (sources of the mineral resources) such as the size of the protected deposit area, the mining area, etc. Another part of the article is devoted to proposals for future mining process. There are two projects in connection with the basic investment plan for PCLA modernization. The first one is the preparation of the survey area for limestone - the stages above the current E15 and the other one is the preparation of the survey area for marl - the Moskové locality. Both of these projects were realized in association with Považskň cementáreň, a.s., Ladce and VŠB - Technical University of Ostrava. An integral part of this article based on the project are also simulation of graphic models and diagrams. The last part of the article documents ways of the cooperation of Butkov Quarry and Považskň cementáreň, a.s., Ladce with the public. The management of the Butkov Quarry and Považskň cementáreň, a.s. have come to realize that their cooperation with the public on cultural and social activities helps both, the public and the quarry (include cement plant).

The Higashi-Shikagoe limestone quarry is an open-pit mine situated in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan, that has experienced four slope failure incidents since 1996. The rock slope behaviour has been monitored since the first failure event by measuring the rock slope surface displacement using an automated polar system. Recent measurements have revealed a gradual decrease of the distance between the beam generator and mirrors over time; however, the displacements and decrease rate differs between the centre and left- and right-hand sides of the quarry. This implies that the deformation characteristics of the rock slope and factors influencing the slope deformation differ at the centre and left- and right-hand sides of the quarry. In this study, the two-dimensional finite element method was used to identify the causes of slope deformation by investigating the effects of limestone excavation at the foot of the rock slope, the deterioration of a ∼70 m-thick clay layer at the rock slope foot wall, and shear failure owing to rainfall infiltration. The numerical results show that slope deformation on the left-hand side and centre of the quarry are induced by clay deterioration, whereas the right-hand side of the quarry is deformed owing to floor excavation and/or shear sliding. The rock slope is presently stable because the magnitude of the rate of displacement decrease is small and no acceleration is observed.
