The ductus arteriosus is an arterial shunt between the aorta and a pulmonary artery, physiological during fetal development, during this period it shunts away part of the blood circulation that would go to the lungs, which at that moment are still afunctional. After birth, there is a physiological closure of this duct, its non-occlusion is called persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA), which is treated surgically. We report the clinical case of a female canine of the German dwarf spitz breed that was diagnosed with PDA in a routine pediatric pre-vaccination consultation. Doppler echocardiography was then performed with confirmation of PDA. Treatment consisted of surgical correction using the standard technique of ligation of the patent ductus arteriosus. The procedure was successful with the patient's recovery.

Abstract Background  Persistent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a common congenital heart defect, of which, the preferred treatment in children and adults is transcatheter occlusion. This report describes the first reported case of acute aortic dissection as a late complication of transcatheter PDA occlusion. Case summary  A 66-year-old healthy woman, with a history of transcatheter PDA closure 12 years previously, died suddenly at home. Post-mortem revealed pericardial tamponade complicating an acute aortic dissection, with a large intimal tear identified adjacent to the PDA occluder. Discussion  Transcatheter occlusion is accepted as a safe and effective treatment in older children and adults, important in preventing haemodynamic sequelae such as heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. Complications are uncommon and mostly acute, including device embolization and haemolysis. Aortic dissection has been reported as an acute complication but only in the setting of incorrect device deployment. This is the first description of aortic dissection as a late complication of transcatheter PDA occlusion and although rare has important ramifications given it is a potentially fatal outcome of a common procedure.

Stenting the patent ductus arteriosus is an old procedure which only lately has shown its advantages at its highest potential. Objective – To apprehend the arterial duct stenting procedure, its history, change over time and present usefulness and technique. Methods and results – We present the fi rst two cases of stent implantation in a persistent ductus arteriosus performed in our institution and a short review of the literature on this subject, connecting our small experience to that of other centers. Conclusions – Stent implantation in the ductus arteriosus is of great help in knowledgeable hands and minds. While it needs a learning curve, careful preparation before introducing it in the daily practice of a cardiovascular center is essential.
