This paper proposes and experimentally investigates a novel nondestructive testing method for ferromagnetic elements monitoring, the Magnetic Recording Method (MRM). In this method, the inspected element must be magnetized in a strictly defined manner before operation. This can be achieved using an array of permanent magnets arranged to produce a quasi-sinusoidal magnetization path. The magnetic field caused by the original residual magnetization of the element is measured and stored for future reference. After the operation or loading, the magnetic field measurement is repeated. Analysis of relative changes in the magnetic field (for selected components) allows identifying applied stress. The proposed research methodology aims to provide information on the steel structure condition unambiguously and accurately. An interpretation of the results without referring to the original magnetization is also possible but could be less accurate. The method can be used as a standard technique for NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) or in structural health monitoring (SHM) systems.

AbstractComputed tomography (CT) is considered the gold standard technique for the assessment of trauma patients with suspected involvement of the eye and orbit. These traumas can result in dramatic consequences to visual function, ocular motility, and aesthetics. CT is a quick and widely available imaging modality, which provides a detailed evaluation of the orbital bony and soft tissue structures, an accurate assessment of the globes, and is used to guide the patients’ treatment planning. For a timely and accurate diagnosis, radiologists should be aware of fracture patterns and possible associated complications, ocular detachments and hemorrhages, and different appearances of intraorbital foreign bodies. This educational review aims to describe all post-traumatic orbital abnormalities that can be identified on CT, providing a list of tips and a diagnostic flowchart to help radiologists deal with this complex condition.

Four-wire measurements have been introduced by Lord Kelvin in 1861 and have since become the standard technique for characterizing small resistances and impedances. However, high-density 4-wire measurements are generally complex, time-consuming, and inefficient because of constraints on interconnects, pads, external wires, and mechanical contacts, thus reducing reproducibility, statistical significance, and throughput. Here, we introduce, systematically design, analyze, and experimentally validate zero interconnect networks interfaced to external instrumentation by couples of twin wire. 3D-printed holders with magnets, interconnects, nonadhesive layers, and spacers can effortlessly establish excellent electrical connections with tunable or minimum contact forces and enable accurate measurements even for delicate devices, such as thin metals on soft polymers. As an example, we measured all the resistances of a twin-wire 29-resistor network made of silver-nanoparticle ink printed on polyimide, paper, or photo paper, including during sintering or temperature calibration, resulting in an unprecedentedly easy and accurate characterization of both resistivity and its temperature coefficient. The theoretical framework and experimental strategies reported here represent a breakthrough toward zero interconnect, simple, and efficient high-density 4-wire characterizations, can be generalized to other 4-wire measurements (impedances, sensors) and can open the way to more statistically meaningful and reproducible analyses of materials, high-throughput measurements, and minimally invasive characterizations of biomaterials.

Thermal conductivity is of high importance for insulating materials since it strongly influences the thermal performance of the building. Generally, it is recommended to measure this property with steady-state methods like guarded hot plate (GHP) or heat flow meter (HFM). These methods are reliable, but steady-state condition can take a long time to be reached. Therefore, transient methods were developed to speed-up the measurements. For instance, the hot disk transient plane source method is a widely used standard technique (ISO 22007-2) for measuring thermal conductivity of various materials. In the last 20 years, this technique has been applied also to bio-based insulating materials. However, overestimated thermal conductivity (compared to steady state method) are frequently measured. More generally, such differences are also observed for low thermal conductivity materials. The aim of this work is to evaluate the influence of numerous factors to explain the origin of these differences. The factors include the experimental setting parameters, the measurement analysis parameter or even the discrepancies between the theoretical model and the real experimental set-up. The analysis is performed for a light-earth biobased concrete made of raw earth and hemp shiv. Recommendations are proposed in conclusion.

ObjectiveTo compare the two surgical techniques in terms of efficacy, safety, and postoperative management over 36 months of follow-up.MethodsThis retrospective clinical cohort study compared the outcome of trabeculectomy surgery and Xen gel implant in patients having uncontrolled glaucoma. Patients were recruited using the following inclusion criteria: uncontrolled intraocular pressure (IOP) on maximally tolerated medical therapy, healthy conjunctiva freely mobile in the superior sector, open-angle, glaucomatous visual field damage, full follow upfollow-up of at least 36 months. Thirty-four patients were submitted to trabeculectomy and 34 to Xen gel implant. We set the lower limit at 6mmHg mm Hg and the upper limit ≤12 mm Hg for criteria A, upper limit to ≤15 mm Hg for criteria B and upper limit ≤18 mm Hg for criteria C. Criteria for success have been characterizedcharacterised according to whether or not this has been achieved without (complete success) or with IOP -lowering medications (qualified success).ResultsFor all survival curves, trabeculectomy was superior to Xen gel implant. When considering complete success, the log-rank test for criteria A was statistically significant (pp=0.006), marginally significant for criteria B (pp=0.065) and not significant for criteria C (pp=0.23). When qualified success was considered, trabeculectomy was superior to Xen gel for criteria A, B, and C (pp=0.012, pp=0.033 and pp=0.025, respectively). Higher number of post-operative flat chamber and bleb leakage was observed in the trabeculectomy group.ConclusionXen gel implant techniques offer a better safety profile but a lower IOP reduction compared to compared with the gold -standard technique.

Background: The study on testes of local dog of Assam is of great value in regard to germplasm conservation. The aim of the study was to evaluate the gross and histomorphological examination of testes of male reproductive system. Methods: The testes were collected at the time of castration from Department of Surgery and Radiology, College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University, Khanapra, Guwahati, Assam, India. The research was carried out for a period of one year in Department of Anatomy and Histology, College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University, Khanapara, Guwahati, Assam. Then gross anatomical studies were made on it and the tissue samples were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin solution and were processed as per the standard technique of procedure (Luna, 1968). The paraffin blocks were sectioned in Shandon Finesse microtome at 5 µm thickness and the sections were stained with Mayer’s Haematoxylin and Eosin staining technique for Cellular details as per the method of Luna (1968). Result: Grossly, the testes of local dog consisted of two surface viz., lateral and medial and two ends i.e. upper end and lower end. The upper end of the testes was occupied by the head of the epididymis and the lower end of the testes was occupied by the tail of the epididymis. Mediastinum testis was observed in the centre of testes of local dog. Histologically, the testes were covered by serous layer (Tunica vaginalis), connective tissue layer (Tunica albugenia) and vascular layer (Tunica vasculosa) from outside to inwards. Spermatogenic cells like spermatogonia, primary spermatocytes, secondary spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa, and sertoli cells were observed in seminiferous tubules. The sertoli cells were attached to the basement membrane of seminiferous tubules. Cluster of Leyding cells were found between the semineniferous tubules and it contained large spherical nuclei. The epididymides were lined by pseudo stratified ciliated columnar epithelium.

Scabies is a global disease with a high prevalence, causing morbidity and even mortality, especially in poor and developing countries. However, it is often misdiagnosed due to varied and unspecified lesions. The gold standard technique for diagnosis is a microscopic examination, which requires experienced experts in finding mites, mainly in ordinary scabies. CO1 and ITS2 genes have been widely used in molecular identification to detect Sarcoptes scabiei and its variants. This study aimed to determine and compare the sensitivity and specificity of CO1 and ITS2 S. scabiei genes to the microscopic examination of scabies skin scrapings. The skin scrapings of 52 subjects with scabies diagnosed by anamnesis, physical examination, and dermoscopic examination were examined under a microscope and analyzed by nested PCR. The diagnostic test result showed that the sensitivity of nested PCR of both CO1 and ITS2 genes to micro‐ scope examination was 100%. However, the specificity of both CO1 and ITS2 nested PCR was poor (24% and 0%). Hence, CO1 and ITS2 nested PCR could be more suitable for screening ordinary scabies in humans than the microscopic examination.

Abstract We propose a cointegration-based Permanent-Transitory decomposition for non-stationary Dynamic Factor Models. Our methodology exploits the cointegration relations among the observable variables and assumes they are driven by a common and an idiosyncratic component. The common component is further split into a long-term non-stationary and a short-term stationary part. A Monte Carlo experiment shows that incorporating the cointegration structure into the DFM leads to a better reconstruction of the space spanned by the factors, compared to the most standard technique of applying a factor model in differenced systems. We apply our procedure to a set of commodity prices to analyse the comovement among different markets and find that commodity prices move together mostly due to long-term common forces; while the trend for the prices of most primary goods is declining, metals and energy exhibit an upward or at least stable pattern since the 2000s.

A widespread application of three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting in basic and translational research requires the accessibility to affordable printers able to produce physiologically relevant tissue models. To facilitate the use of bioprinting as a standard technique in biology, an open-source device based on a consumer-grade 3D stereolithographic (SL) printer was developed. This SL bioprinter can produce complex constructs that preserve cell viability and recapitulate the physiology of tissues. The detailed documentation of the modifications apported to the printer as well as a throughout performance analysis allow for a straightforward adoption of the device in other labs and its customization for specific applications. Given the low cost, several modified bioprinters could be simultaneously operated for a highly parallelized tissue production. To showcase the capability of the bioprinter, we produced constructs consisting of patient-derived cholangiocarcinoma organoids encapsulated in a gelatin methacrylate (GelMA)/polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel. A thorough characterization of different GelMA/PEGDA ratios revealed that the mechanical properties of the bioprinted tumor model can be accurately fine-tuned to mimic a specific tumor micro-environment. Immunofluorescence and gene expression analyses of tumor markers confirmed that the bioprinted synthetic hydrogel provides a flexible and adequate replacement of animal-derived reconstituted extracellular matrix.

Temperature plays a pivotal role in the success of larvae production. Evaluation of the effects of different temperatures on growth, feed efficiency, and survival of domesticated Indonesian mahseer (Tor soro) larvae was carried out to determine an optimum rearing temperature. Five different temperature settings of 22°C, 24°C, 26°C, 28°C, and 30°C were used as the treatments arranged in triplicates, in indoor closed recirculating systems. The larvae were stocked in a rectangular glass tank with a stocking density of 150 larvae per tank and fed with a commercial feed (30% protein content) three times a day, about 10% per body weight over 61 days of observation. Measured parameters included the specific growth rate of total weight (SGRTW) and length (SGRTL), feed efficiency (FE), and survival rate (SR). The result showed that the treatments of different temperatures significantly affected the growth performance and feed efficiency of the larvae. The growth performance and feed efficiency of mahseer larva were much better at rearing temperature from 24°C to 28°C compared with those at 22°C and 30°C. There were no significant differences in SR in different temperatures tested. The SR was found to range from 86.44% to 100% in all treatments. Maintaining temperature ranging from 24°C to 28°C is the best rearing condition to achieve the optimum growth and feed efficiency of mahseer during the larval rearing period. The findings from this research could be set as a standard technique in larval rearing of Indonesian mahseer (Tor soro).
