The damage that occurs around the tire bead region is one of the critical failure forms of a tire. Generally, the prediction of tire durability is carried out by the experimental method. However, it takes a lot of money and time to conduct experiments. Therefore, to determine the fatigue life of radial tire bead, a reasonable prediction method is proposed in this paper. Fatigue testing of bead rubber compounds to determine the ΔSED-number of the cycle (Nf) was applied. The maximum strain energy density range (ΔSEDmax) of several bead compounds was obtained by steady-state rolling analysis with a finite element method. This quantity is then inserted into a fatigue life equation to estimate the fatigue life. The experimental results of the 175/75R14 tire were compared with the estimated value, which showed a good correlation. It is concluded that the method can be effectively applied to the fatigue life prediction of the tire bead.

The wet grip performance of tire is one of the important performances affecting vehicle safety. The steering, acceleration, and braking of the vehicle are directly affected by the grounding characteristics between the radial tire and the ground. In order to study the influence of grounding characteristics of the tire on wet grip performance, ten 205/55R16 tires produced by different manufacturers were selected and tested. The grounding characteristics of the tires were tested using an optical test rig for tire grounding pressure distribution, considering inflation pressure distribution, load and wheel alignment. The tire-road contact area was subdivided into five parts, and 69 parameters were used to describe the grounding characteristics. A software was proposed to process the test results automatically, and 69 grounding characteristic parameters of each tire were obtained. Correlation analysis on tire wet grip performance and grounding characteristics was used for selecting the principal parameters. Finally, eight grounding characteristic parameters related to tire wet grip performance was obtained. Among them are five grounding characteristic parameters (central area rectangle ratio, central area width, internal shoulder length-to-width ratio, external and internal shoulder contact area ratio, external and internal shoulder impression area ratio) which have high correlation to tire wet grip performance, and three grounding characteristic parameters (external shoulder width, external shoulder length-to-width ratio, external and internal shoulder width ratio) which have low correlation to the wet grip performance of the tire. The principal component analysis method was used to analyze the highly correlated grounding characteristic parameters, and the regression equation for evaluating tire wet grip performance was fitted. The comparison of experimental and fitted values show that the errors are within 4%. The result demonstrates that, the method for evaluating wet grip performance of the radial tire through tire-road grounding characteristics was achieved.

This paper investigates the planar wide-frequency vibration characteristics of heavy-load radial tires with a large aspect ratio. A proposed tire model with a piecewise flexible beam on an elastic foundation is investigated and validated using experimental modal analysis and theoretical modeling method. The reproducibility of frequency response functions below 400 Hz is discussed. The experimental modal analysis particularly assesses the coupling of features across the circumferential and cross-sectional directions of heavy-load radial tire carcass. Piecewise circumferential modal characteristics were investigated experimentally, leading to the suggestion of a piecewise flexible beam on an elastic tire foundation. Using a genetic algorithm (GA), the structural parameters EI, ρ A , and kr and damping coefficients η and cr for the proposed tire model are identified, and the piecewise transfer functions and the planar transfer functions for a heavy-load radial tire are compared with planar hammer test. Experimental and theoretical results show the following: (1) the sectional vibration characteristics for a heavy-load radial tire with a large aspect ratio result from the cross-sectional vibration of the tire carcass; (2) the piecewise transfer function is mainly influenced by the circumferential vibration of the flexible carcass, and this is consistent with a model where a flexible beam is placed on an elastic tire foundation; (3) the analytical transfer functions calculated for the proposed tire model, drawing on the identified structural parameters and damping coefficients, agree well with the experimental results.

Based on ABAQUS software, the three-dimensional finite element models of 195/50R16 radial tire and three kinds of nonpneumatic tire, i.e., spoke plate, honeycomb and grid type, are established, and the static and dynamic performance of the four finite element models of tire are analysed. The results show that in the static condition analysis, the ground pressure of the nonpneumatic tire is distributed on both sides of the tread; the stress concentration of the nonpneumatic tire mainly occurs in the grounding area near the support spoke; the deformation area of nonpneumatic tire mainly appears in the area of grounding and adjacent to the grounding spoke; In the analysis of the tire’s steady rolling condition, the ground imprint of a nonpneumatic tire is similar to that of a bar rectangle, and the ground pressure distribution is relatively uniform. The static and dynamic characteristics of honeycomb nonpneumatic tire are close to that of a radial tire. The research work of this paper will provide some reference for the structural design and parameter optimization of nonpneumatic tires.
