As one of the fundamental traits governing the operation of quantum world, the uncertainty relation, from the perspective of Heisenberg, rules the minimum deviation of two incompatible observations for arbitrary quantum states. Notwithstanding, the original measurements appeared in Heisenberg’s principle are strong such that they may disturb the quantum system itself. Hence an intriguing question is raised: What will happen if the mean values are replaced by weak values in Heisenberg’s uncertainty relation? In this work, we investigate the question in the case of measuring position and momentum in a simple harmonic oscillator via designating one of the eigenkets thereof to the pre-selected state. Astonishingly, the original Heisenberg limit is broken for some post-selected states, designed as a superposition of the pre-selected state and another eigenkets of harmonic oscillator. Moreover, if two distinct coherent states reside in the pre- and post-selected states respectively, the variance reaches the lower bound in common uncertainty principle all the while, which is in accord with the circumstance in Heisenberg’s primitive framework.

AbstractEstimating entropy production directly from experimental trajectories is of great current interest but often requires a large amount of data or knowledge of the underlying dynamics. In this paper, we propose a minimal strategy using the short-time Thermodynamic Uncertainty Relation (TUR) by means of which we can simultaneously and quantitatively infer the thermodynamic force field acting on the system and the (potentially exact) rate of entropy production from experimental short-time trajectory data. We benchmark this scheme first for an experimental study of a colloidal particle system where exact analytical results are known, prior to studying the case of a colloidal particle in a hydrodynamical flow field, where neither analytical nor numerical results are available. In the latter case, we build an effective model of the system based on our results. In both cases, we also demonstrate that our results match with those obtained from another recently introduced scheme.

In the thermodynamic equilibrium of dipolar-coupled spin systems under the influence of a Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (D–M) interaction along the z-axis, the current study explores the quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation (QMA-EUR), entropy mixedness and the concurrence two-spin entanglement. Quantum entanglement is reduced at increased temperature values, but inflation uncertainty and mixedness are enhanced. The considered quantum effects are stabilized to their stationary values at high temperatures. The two-spin entanglement is entirely repressed if the D–M interaction is disregarded, and the entropic uncertainty and entropy mixedness reach their maximum values for equal coupling rates. Rather than the concurrence, the entropy mixedness can be a proper indicator of the nature of the entropic uncertainty. The effect of model parameters (D–M coupling and dipole–dipole spin) on the quantum dynamic effects in thermal environment temperature is explored. The results reveal that the model parameters cause significant variations in the predicted QMA-EUR.

AbstractWe investigate the thermodynamic uncertainty relation for the $$(1+1)$$ ( 1 + 1 ) dimensional Kardar–Parisi–Zhang (KPZ) equation on a finite spatial interval. In particular, we extend the results for small coupling strengths obtained previously to large values of the coupling parameter. It will be shown that, due to the scaling behavior of the KPZ equation, the thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR) product displays two distinct regimes which are separated by a critical value of an effective coupling parameter. The asymptotic behavior below and above the critical threshold is explored analytically. For small coupling, we determine this product perturbatively including the fourth order; for strong coupling we employ a dynamical renormalization group approach. Whereas the TUR product approaches a value of 5 in the weak coupling limit, it asymptotically displays a linear increase with the coupling parameter for strong couplings. The analytical results are then compared to direct numerical simulations of the KPZ equation showing convincing agreement.

Quantum steering, as a cornerstone of quantum information, is usually used to witness the quantum correlation of bipartite and multi-partite states. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the quantum steering inequality of two-qubit mixed states based on the fine-grained uncertainty relation. Our experimental results show that the steering inequality has potent sensitivity to Werner states and Bell diagonal states. The steering strategy exhibits a strong ability to identify that Werner states are steerable when the decoherence coefficient a>12. Compared to the steering inequality obtained by another stratagem, the steering witness criteria of mixed states based on the fine-grained uncertainty relation demonstrated in our experiment has better precision and accuracy. Moreover, the detection efficiency in our measurement setup is only required to be 50% to close the detection loophole, which means our approach needs less detector efficiency to certificate the steerability of mixed states.
