The British vote to leave the European Union in 2016 shook the Franco-British bilateral relationship (FBBR) to its core and led to unexpected tensions, considering the depth of cooperation between the two countries in many fields, and their geography. In this article we analyse the impact of Brexit on the FBBR to date, including the likely aftershocks. We focus on the 2017-2020 Brexit negotiations themselves, and on the matters that escaped those negotiations but which are core to the FBBR namely: security and defence; borders and migration. We draw on a number of high-level interviews with French and British officials and on literatures of contemporary diplomacy to ask how the new environment for the FBBR challenges traditional ways of conducting bilateral diplomacy outside of the multilateral framework provided by the European Union.

Significance Domestic politics will be particularly unsettled in Tunisia and Libya. International dynamics are set to dominate the outlook for Egypt, especially on human rights and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD); and for Algeria and Morocco, whose bilateral relationship took a turn for the worse in 2021.

This concluding chapter reviews and summarizes, reiterating the problematic aspects of current practice in applying the concept of revisionism. It introduces prospect theory to provide insights about prospective Chinese and US policies, and it offers caveats about the possible direction of these countries’ relations. Despite the recent escalation of tension between Beijing and Washington, the authors view the future with cautious optimism. They argue that to stabilize this important bilateral relationship, both sides should maintain mutual nuclear deterrence, avoid various forms of power politics (especially displays of military escalation), and dial back nationalist rhetoric contributing to tension and undermining trust. A transition of international order does not necessarily require a power transition between these countries, and it can come about peacefully.

The Sino-Venezuelan relationship can be divided into three distinct eras: the origin of the relationship (1974-1999), the golden age during Chávez presidency (1999-2013) and a declining relationship after Maduro rise to power (2014-onwards). This paper aims to provide a historic, political, and economic overview of the bilateral relationship between 1974 and early 2020, in order to determine if the China-Venezuela link is truly based on pragmatism. Additionally, it will identify the problems the bilateral relationship has faced since 2014, as well as the factors which determine President Xi’s current support of Maduro.

Australias relationship with Indonesia has been a bit like the board game Snakes and Ladders. Incremental progress in the relationship (up the ladder) is easily undone (down the snake) over a range of misunderstandings including issues like beef, boats, spies, clemency, Timor and Papua. Both countries have considerable overlapping interests. They both have to find a way to deepen and broaden the bilateral relationship to prevent this cycle from continuing to recur. In considering how to do that, understanding how they got here is important. Bilateral and multilateral engagement, on trade, education, and security including through IA-CEPA, links like the Ikahan network, additional New Colombo Plan engagement and a MANIS regional maritime cooperation forum may help make that happen.

This article examines the bilateral relationship between Australia and China, which has become problematic since 2015. The causes for the downturn in relations are examined and two key reasons are offered: Australia is caught in the middle of power contestation between the United States and China; and Australia’s fear of its economic overdependence on China. This article deduces what a reset would look like and how this may eventuate.

China and Pakistan are frequently touted as “strategic partners” based on the historic journey that has fused both states in a resilient partnership. The bilateral relationship is multisectoral based on diplomatic, defence and socio-economic cooperation. If focus of the bilateral ties is to be pinpointed, it would be defence and security cooperation that has been the defining factor of the relationship. However, the equation transformed with the transformation in the geopolitical context of the South Asian region post-2011. Pakistan signed a major economic venture with China; the China Pakistan Economic Corridor besides opening up to Russia as well. After the launch of CPEC in 2015, the defence centric bilateral relationship between Pakistan and China changed into a mega economic partnership. The paper has attempted to understand this transformation between the two countries and make a case for “strategic interdependence” rather than strategic partnership. Since, interdependence takes a deeper meaning than partnership.
