AbstractThis chapter discusses the Proceedings of the JRC-IEA Roundtable, which objective was to promote a technical debate on the recent developments of DSGE and alternative modelling strategies, the main mechanisms at play and their effectiveness in assessing the impact of R&D and innovation policies. Leading academics presented state-of-the-art macroeconomic models in the area of economic growth and innovation. It follows a debate between academics and practitioners trying to figure out the key elements of a macro model designed to evaluate innovation policies should include.

In this study, we propose an improved macro-model of an N-type feedback field-effect transistor (NFBFET) and compare it with a previous macro-model for circuit simulation. The macro-model of the NFBFET is configured into two parts. One is a charge integrator circuit and the other is a current generator circuit. The charge integrator circuit consisted of one N-type metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (NMOSFET), one capacitor, and one resistor. This circuit implements the charging characteristics of NFBFET, which occur in the channel region. For the previous model, the current generator circuit consisted of one ideal switch and one resistor. The previous current generator circuit could implement IDS-VGS characteristics but could not accurately implement IDS-VDS characteristics. To solve this problem, we connected a physics-based diode model with an ideal switch in series to the current generator circuit. The parameters of the NMOSFET and diode used in this proposed model were fitted from TCAD data of the NFBFET, divided into two parts. The proposed model implements not only the IDS-VGS characteristics but also the IDS-VDS characteristics. A hybrid inverter and an integrate and fire (I&F) circuit for a spiking neural network, which consisted of NMOSFETs and an NFBFET, were simulated using the circuit simulator to verify a validation of the proposed NFBFET macro-model.

A dominant strand of orthodoxy argues that the problem of the informal sector could be mitigated through the capitalistic growth process. But our observations on India are different—with an expansion of the capitalistic formal sector, as the economy grows, there is a proliferation of fissured informality. Using a structuralist macro-model, we provide certain explanations for this phenomenon, which are also tested empirically using Indian subnational-state and firm-level data. Thus, we explore both the short- and long-run effects of the expansion of the formal sector on the heterogeneous informal economy. While a section of the population is pulled into the advanced informal activities, a vast segment is pushed to petty production. Accordingly, the orthodox transition narrative is questioned and alternative policy and political possibilities are introduced. JEL Classification: O11, O13, O17, P48

AbstractIn this paper, I use a simple SIR Macro model to examine Japan’s soft lockdown policies in 2021 under the COVID-19 crisis. As real-time research, this paper consists of two parts written during two different research periods. The first part, which was originally reported in February 2021, studies the Japan’s second soft lockdown policy (state of emergency declaration) from January to March 2021. After the model is calibrated using 2020 data, the results show that a long enough lockdown can avoid future lockdowns, improving both the infection and the economy. In addition, I propose the ICU targeting policy, which keeps the number of severe patients at a constant level, mimicking the monetary policy’s inflation targeting. The model’s prediction is evaluated from an ex-post perspective in the second part, written in July 2021. I find that the model broadly captures the realized consequences of the second soft lockdown and the subsequent paths. Furthermore, the simulation is projected to the end of the pandemic under a revised scenario, incorporating the proliferation of COVID-19 variants. Finally, I discuss the effectiveness of the inverse lockdown (economic stimulus) policy in the fall of 2021 under the dynamic infection externality.
