Abstract The Earth's core is constantly and efficiently cooled by mantle convection. The heat flux transferred from the core to the mantle through the core-mantle boundary (CMB) is critical for understanding the dynamics of solid Earth. Although it is difficult to estimate the CMB heat flux, its history could be reconstructed from geomagnetic reversal frequency. However, overlooked short geomagnetic reversals may exist in the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS), which affects the estimation of the heat flux history. Here, we report four new high-precision 40Ar/39Ar ages of the Oligocene Ethiopian traps. The traps may contain undiscovered reversals in marine magnetic anomaly. Based on the ages, we identified new reversals in Chron C12n, which was not found in marine magnetic anomalies. Our non-parametric analysis of GPTS suggests four potential periods of missing geomagnetic reversals, which correspond to long polarity intervals in GPTS. We found that C12n correspond to one of the periods. This indicates that several undetected reversals may exist within or near the edge of long polarity intervals after the Cretaceous Normal Superchron (prolonged stable polarity period). Considering the undetected reversals, we conclude that the CMB heat flux increased more slowly and monotonically after the Superchron than that ever estimated.

For mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORBs) and ocean island basalts (OIBs), measurements of Pb isotope ratios show broad linear correlations with a certain degree of scatter. In 207Pb/204Pb - 206Pb/204Pb space, the best fit line defines a pseudo-isochron age (τPb) of ~1.9 Gyr.Previous modelling suggests a relative change in the behaviours of U and Pb between 2.25-2.5 Ga, resulting in net recycling of HIMU (high U/Pb) material in the latter part of Earth's history, to explain the observed τPb. However, simulations in which fractionation is controlled by a single set of partition coefficients throughout the model runs fail to reproduce τPb and the observed scatter in Pb isotope ratios. We build on these models with 3D mantle convection simulations including parameterisations for melting, U recycling from the continents and preferential removal of Pb from subducted oceanic crust. We find that both U recycling after the great oxygenation event (GOE) and Pb extraction after the onset of plate tectonics, are required in order to fit the observed gradient and scatter of both the 207Pb/204Pb - 206Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb - 206Pb/204Pb arrays. Unlike much previous work, our model does not require accumulations of subducted oceanic crust to persist at the CMB for long periods of time in order to match geochemical observations.

In the absence of global plate tectonics, mantle convection and plume-lithosphere interaction are the main drivers of surface deformation on Venus. Among documented tectonic structures, circular volcano-tectonic features known as coronae may be the clearest surface manifestations of mantle plumes and hold clues to the global Venusian tectonic regime. Yet, the exact processes underlying coronae formation and the reasons for their diverse morphologies remain controversial. Here, we use 3D thermomechanical numerical simulations of impingement of a thermal mantle plume upon the Venusian lithosphere to assess the origin and diversity of large Venusian coronae. The ability of the mantle plume to penetrate into the Venusian lithosphere results in four main outcomes: lithospheric dripping, short-lived subduction, embedded plume and plume underplating. During the first three scenarios, plume penetration and spreading induce crustal thickness variations that eventually lead to a final topographic isostasy-driven topographic inversion from circular trenches surrounding elevated interiors to raised rims surrounding inner depressions, as observed on many Venusian coronae. Different corona structures may represent not only different styles of plume-lithosphere interactions, but also different stages in evolution. A morphological analysis of large existing coronae leads to the conclusion that least 37 large coronae (including the largest Artemis corona) are active, providing evidence for widespread ongoing plume activity on Venus.

Thick and highly viscous roots are the key to cratonic survival. Nevertheless, cratonic roots can be destroyed under certain geological scenarios. Eruption of mantle plumes underneath cratons can reduce root viscosity and thus make them more prone to deformation by mantle convection. It has been proposed that the Indian craton could have been thinned due to eruption of the Réunion plume underneath it at ca. 65 Ma. In this study, we constructed spherical time-dependent forward mantle convection models to investigate whether the Réunion plume eruption could have reduced the Indian craton thickness. Along with testing the effect of different strengths of craton and its surrounding asthenosphere, we examined the effect of temperature-dependent viscosity on craton deformation. Our results show that the plume-induced thermomechanical erosion could have reduced the Indian craton thickness by as much as ~130 km in the presence of temperature-dependent viscosity. We also find that the plume material could have lubricated the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary region beneath the Indian plate. This could be a potential reason for acceleration of the Indian plate since 65 Ma.

The Lattice Boltzmann Method is one of the computational fluid dynamics methods that can be applied to simulate fluid based on the microscopic and kinetic theory of gases. In this study, earth mantle convection is simulated by combining the concept of lid-driven cavity simulation and natural convection using the Lattice Boltzmann method in a two-dimensional system (D2Q9). The results of the lid-driven cavity and natural convection simulation are comparable to previous works. This study shows that at a certain lid velocity, the direction of the moving plume is changed. This earth mantle convection simulation will give better and more reliable results by considering more complicated boundary conditions and adequate simulation systems.

AbstractQuantifying natural processes that shape our planet is a key to understanding the geological observations. Many phenomena in the Earth are not in thermodynamic equilibrium. Cooling of the Earth, mantle convection, mountain building are examples of dynamic processes that evolve in time and space and are driven by gradients. During those irreversible processes, entropy is produced. In petrology, several thermodynamic approaches have been suggested to quantify systems under chemical and mechanical gradients. Yet, their thermodynamic admissibility has not been investigated in detail. Here, we focus on a fundamental, though not yet unequivocally answered, question: which thermodynamic formulation for petrological systems under gradients is appropriate—mass or molar? We provide a comparison of both thermodynamic formulations for chemical diffusion flux, applying the positive entropy production principle as a necessary admissibility condition. Furthermore, we show that the inappropriate solution has dramatic consequences for understanding the key processes in petrology, such as chemical diffusion in the presence of pressure gradients.

The abundances of water and highly to moderately volatile elements in planets are considered critical to mantle convection, surface evolution processes, and habitability. From the first flyby space probes to the more recent “Perseverance” and “Tianwen-1” missions, “follow the water,” and, more broadly, “volatiles,” has been one of the key themes of martian exploration. Ratios of volatiles relative to refractory elements (e.g., K/Th, Rb/Sr) are consistent with a higher volatile content for Mars than for Earth, despite the contrasting present-day surface conditions of those bodies. This study presents K isotope data from a spectrum of martian lithologies as an isotopic tracer for comparing the inventories of highly and moderately volatile elements and compounds of planetary bodies. Here, we show that meteorites from Mars have systematically heavier K isotopic compositions than the bulk silicate Earth, implying a greater loss of K from Mars than from Earth. The average “bulk silicate” δ41K values of Earth, Moon, Mars, and the asteroid 4-Vesta correlate with surface gravity, the Mn/Na “volatility” ratio, and most notably, bulk planet H2O abundance. These relationships indicate that planetary volatile abundances result from variable volatile loss during accretionary growth in which larger mass bodies preferentially retain volatile elements over lower mass objects. There is likely a threshold on the size requirements of rocky (exo)planets to retain enough H2O to enable habitability and plate tectonics, with mass exceeding that of Mars.
