Soil salinity exert negative impacts on agricultural production and regarded as a crucial issue in global wetland rice production (Oryza sativa L.). Indigenous salt-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (Bacillus sp.) could be used for improving rice productivity under salinity stress. This study screened potential salt-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) collected from coastal salt-affected rice cultivation areas under laboratory and glasshouse conditions. Furthermore, the impacts of these PGPRs were tested on biochemical attributes and nutrient contents in various rice varieties under salt stress. The two most promising PGPR strains, i.e., ‘UPMRB9’ (Bacillus tequilensis 10b) and ‘UPMRE6’ (Bacillus aryabhattai B8W22) were selected for glasshouse trial. Results indicated that ‘UPMRB9’ improved osmoprotectant properties, i.e., proline and total soluble sugar (TSS), antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT). Moreover, ‘UPMRB9’ inoculated rice plants accumulated higher amount of nitrogen and calcium in tissues. Therefore, the indigenous salt-tolerant PGPR strain ‘UPMRB9’ could be used as a potential bio-augmentor for improving biochemical attributes and nutrient uptake in rice plants under salinity stress. This study could serve as a preliminary basis for future large-scale trials under glasshouse and field conditions.

AbstractGeranium robertianum is a herbaceous plant that prefers shady and fertile forest habitats. However, it also occurs on railway tracks, where there are difficult conditions for plant growth and regular herbicide spraying (in high concentrations, twice a year). One of the most commonly used herbicides in railway areas is glyphosate. The effect of the glyphosate on the G. robertianum plants found on railway tracks and in nearby forests in north-eastern Poland was checked. The aim of the study was to explain how G. robertianum can survive on railway tracks despite spraying with the glyphosate. Increased tolerance to the glyphosate of the G. robertianum plants from track populations was demonstrated compared to the plants from forest populations that had not previously been in contact with the herbicide. After 35 days after treatment with the herbicide, 75% of the plants from the observed forest populations withered, while only 38% did from the track populations. Ultrastructure of plant leaf cells from forest populations was strongly disturbed, which was not observed in plants from track populations. It was also shown that plants from track populations accumulated more glyphosate and AMPA in their tissues than plants from forest populations. The obtained results indicate that long-term use of herbicides may cause formation of biotypes of plants resistant to a given herbicide. This fact explains the possibility of G. robertianum occurring on railway tracks, despite spraying with the glyphosate. It is also a manifestation of microevolutionary processes.

Porang tubers have enormous potential in the field of production. Bali plans to export 5,000 tons of porang tubers to China this year. This need cannot be fulfilled because in Indonesia porang has not been cultivated intensively. Star fruit village is an area located at an altitude of 500 - 600 masl. Most of the people in this village work as farmers / planters. At the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, most of the villagers experienced layoffs (PHK). The objectives of this study were to identify porang cultivation at the research location; and know economic prospects of porang plant cultivation at the research location. Porang cultivation is carried out under the shade of coffee, clove, durian and mangosteen plants which are in accordance with the characteristics of the porang plant. Porang tubers are sold to pegepul in the local village for Rp. 11,000 with a tuber weight of 2-3 kg. Porang cultivation is carried out between annual crops such as coffee, cloves, mangosteen and durian. Porang is a shade tolerant plant up to 60%. So it is suitable to be cultivated in Belimbing Village which has an altitude of 500-600 meters above sea level. Porang plants have economic prospects because they have many benefits and are processed plants that are exported to various countries.

Abstract Guayusa ( Ilex guayusa ) is an endemic plant from the Amazon with potential medicinal applications. Indigenous people are familiar with such applications and use guayusa based on ancestral knowledge. There is a growing interest in guayusa-based products in urban areas of Ecuador and internationally. The supply cannot meet the demand. Currently, traditional practices are used for guayusa growth and the potential use of the protected forest is foreseen. This work describes a protocol for the in vitro propagation of guayusa, a sustainable solution to generate high quality plants in reduced space. Stakes obtained from stems were used as explants. Chemical sterilization with ethanol and sodium hypochlorite resulted in 100% surface-sterilized stakes. The growth medium mWPM resulted in favorable outcomes regarding shoot development and elongation, as well as rooting. Supplementation with activated charcoal resulted in reduced browning during the elongation phase. The majority of shoots were able to develop roots spontaneously. Medium supplementation with the auxin indole-3-butyric acid, IBA, may be considered when rooting does not occur spontaneously. Acclimatization was performed in soil. The protocol was tested under different light spectra, revealing that guayusa growth is affected by light quality. The photobiology of this shade tolerant plant requires further characterization, but the data uncovered a potential role for green and far-red light in root development.
