The research aims to identify learning styles in health education institutions. The analysis was applied in post-secondary health schools, identifying in addition to the general characteristics of the group, particular aspects of the Kolb model, which determines the belonging to a learning style. The research tool used was Kolb's questionnaire, it was applied in two health education units, in order to be able to capture possible differences between the learning styles present in the respondents of the general nurse specialization. It should be noted that the emphasis was on the four learning styles present in Kolb's model, as this model is the best known and it is still widely used in research. The study highlighted the fact that there is a diversity of learning styles identified within these health education institutions that depend to a greater or lesser extent on the age of the respondents. This research can be extended, being able to be applied in several post-secondary health education units in order to increase the degree of accuracy, the study can be carried out both in state or private health education units, thus increasing the complexity and will be able to obtain even more relevant results.

The nervous system’s central role in all human functions means that neurological disorders often directly impact on other body systems, so the management of neurological conditions is a complex and specialized area of nursing practice. People with neurological disorders will normally be cared for by specialist clinical teams working in neurological or neurosurgical units or spinal centres. However, general adult nurses will come into contact with people who have a collection of symptoms suggesting a neurological disorder, and they are highly likely to encounter people who are living with dementia. It is therefore important that general adult nurses can recognize neurological changes and communicate effectively with people who have disorders of the brain or nervous system. This chapter outlines key facts about neurological conditions which are likely to be useful to the general nurse. These include an overview of conditions, clinical examinations, and key nursing considerations. A summary of frequently prescribed medicines is also presented.

Many disorders of vision and hearing are concomitant with the growing elderly demographic, and conditions of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat are often associated with other health states. Whilst ophthalmic and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) interventions are largely the domain of distinct clinical specialisms, general adult nurses are likely to encounter people with eyes and ENT conditions across all care settings. This chapter outlines key facts about eye and vision disorders and ENT conditions which are likely to be useful to the general nurse. These include an overview of common conditions, investigations, and treatments. The chapter also includes short sections of key facts related to ophthalmic and ENT surgery. Important nursing considerations for decision-making and practice are outlined, and an overview of frequently prescribed medications is presented in a summary table.

Diabetes is recognized as a significant, and increasing, long-term health condition. General adult nurses may encounter people with diabetes in a variety of circumstances and settings, but many people manage their own condition in the community, supported by specialist nurses. This chapter outlines key facts relating to diabetes, likely to be of relevance to the general nurse. These include the different types of diabetes, their symptoms and treatments, and diabetic emergencies. A summary of clinical investigations in diabetes is also presented, along with a summary table of medications frequently used to treat the condition. Key nursing considerations for working with people newly diagnosed or living with diabetes are outlined.

An important part of nursing decision-making, in both hospital and community settings, is interpreting the results of physiological measurements. These may be used to assist in making a diagnosis, monitoring the effects of treatments, or assessing changes to a person’s health condition. Physiological values are always interpreted within the context of what is known about the person and their health state, and can guide nursing practices and interventions. This chapter describes widely used physiological measurements, together with reference range values which may be useful to the general nurse.
