Purpose: Athletic training education continues to evolve thereby increasing the importance of student retention. Understanding student motivation through achievement goal orientation and grit scores may help support student’s persistence in an athletic training program. The purpose was to determine if a relationship exists between achievement goal orientation and grit to help provide educators a better understanding of their students’ reasons for persisting to help improve retention. Methods: An achievement goal orientation survey and grit scale were administered, and quantitative data was analyzed statistically from Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education- accredited programs in good standing for the 2018-2019 academic year. Results: A total of 520 professional athletic training students participated. There was a significant main effect (F(1,3)=690.0, pConclusions: Athletic training students have similar grit scores across all cohorts and classify higher with mastery goal orientation compared to performance-approach, performance-avoidant, and work-avoidant orientations. Educators should understand students’ motivation to provide support and challenging tasks for their passion and perseverance for athletic training. Context The examination, diagnosis, and intervention curricular content listed in the 2020 Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education Standards for Accreditation of Professional Athletic Training Programs states that learners must be able to evaluate and manage wounds, including care and closure. Although many wound closure techniques exist in clinical practice, suturing may be a necessary skill for athletic trainers (ATs) and one for which they need proper training. Objective To describe the instructional format and step-by-step process for wound closure using the “simple interrupted” method of suturing. Background Athletic training has continued to evolve in terms of the skills that are permitted within the scope of an AT's practice. The skill of wound closure via suturing has been omitted in athletic training programs due to the invasive nature of the technique. As state practice acts continue to adapt, many athletic training programs are adding suturing to their curricular content, and subsequently, a need exists to educate the credentialed AT. Description A multimodal approach to teaching suturing is recommended. This educational technique focuses on the cognitive introduction module that should occur before the skills lab. Step-by-step instructions are available to ensure that educators are able to properly train others in the task and for learners to gain a baseline understanding of the technique. Clinical Advantage(s) Described herein are multiple strategies related to supplies and techniques to be mindful of the resources available for other athletic training programs. In addition, ATs who are trained and permitted to suture can provide improved patient outcomes through comprehensive interventions at the point of care. Conclusion(s) Learners should be taught the skills of suturing including wound cleaning and anesthetizing and given opportunities to practice the skills over time. By providing budget-conscious options and alternative methods of instruction, this skill can be delivered for most programs.

Context Tensegrity is a structural-organization model initially described in the architecture and design fields. By applying tensegrity design principles to biological structures, scientists have developed biotensegrity to explain a complex systems-on-systems structural-organization philosophy for integrated human movements. Objective To provide a brief historical overview of tensegrity and biotensegrity principles, including recommendations and benefits for integrating these structural models into athletic training education. Background Tensegrity and biotensegrity structures require constant interaction between continuous tension and discontinuous compression elements that connect through focal adhesion points. During the 1970s and 1980s, scientists applied tensegrity concepts to biological organisms to create an integrated model of human structure and interaction. Since then, biotensegrity has grown as an accepted biological structural model capable of explaining complex and integrated human movements. Synthesis By teaching tensegrity and biotensegrity principles, athletic training educators can provide athletic training students with a basic and consistent human body structural model. With this knowledge, students can better comprehend the integrated kinetic chain, including current and future prevention, examination, and rehabilitation paradigms. Results Although absent from the Practice Analysis, seventh edition, and the 2020 Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education curricular content standards, tensegrity and biotensegrity relate to many injury prevention, examination, treatment, and rehabilitation concepts regularly taught in professional athletic training programs. Recommendation(s) Athletic training educators should consider ways to incorporate biotensegrity models into professional athletic training programs to improve critical thinking and whole-person health care principles of athletic training students. Conclusion(s) Integrating tensegrity and biotensegrity principles into professional athletic training programs provides a structural hierarchy of human body organization that athletic training students can apply to a multitude of current and future methodical approaches.

Context Soft skills have been reported to be a necessary aspect of athletic training education and clinical practice. However, almost no empirical research has explored the level of importance of soft skills or the frequency with which they are evaluated within athletic training education. Objective To delineate the perceived importance of soft skills within athletic training education and describe the frequency with which those soft skills are evaluated within athletic training programs. Patients or Other Participants Four hundred eight program directors (PDs) of Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education–accredited athletic training programs were invited to patriciate; 122 responded and 108 of those responses (88.5%) were usable (64% PDs of baccalaureate programs, 28% PDs of professional masters, 8% did not disclose), yielding a 26.5% response rate. All 10 National Athletic Trainers' Association districts were represented, with the highest representation (26%) from District 4. A majority of respondents were female (57%). Most respondents (79%) had 11 or more years of experience (33% of those ≥21 years) as an athletic training educator, and 98% of respondents identified as white/non-Hispanic. Main Outcome Measure(s) Importance and frequency of soft-skill evaluation were measured using the Athletic Training Soft-Skills Assessment Instrument (ATSSAI). Data of perceived importance and frequency of evaluation were organized by various demographic variables and between scale dimensions. Results The ATSSAI psychometric analysis yielded satisfactory internal consistency and validity (α = .84 to .93). Paired-samples t test indicated significant differences between the ATSSAI Perceived Importance and Frequency of Evaluation scales (mean = 1.65 ± .47 versus mean = 3.29 ± 1.17, P = .000; Cohen d = 1.83). Pearson r correlation showed a positive relationship between perceived importance and frequency of evaluation, r = 0.81. Independent-samples t tests revealed female PDs perceived 2 soft skills (18%; observant and exact and prepared and adaptable) as more important (t99 = 2.12 and 2.18, P = .31 and .37) than did male PDs and evaluated 3 (27%; decisive and confident, prepared and adaptable, and observant and exact) more frequently (t99 = 2.35–2.50, P = .14–.21) than did male PDs. Conclusions All soft skills identified as necessary for inclusion in athletic training education were perceived to be very or extremely important by PDs. However, those same soft skills were not evaluated as often as their importance might suggest. Dependability and responsibility was the most important and most frequently evaluated soft skill (mean = 1.31 ± .51 and 2.21 ± 1.30, respectively). Female PDs generally perceived soft skills as more important and reported evaluating them more frequently. Soft-skill development is a tacit-based phenomenon that contributes to leadership effectiveness and clinical preparedness.

Context Clinical immersion is a newly required concept within athletic training education, and preceptors play a critical role in facilitating athletic training students' learning during those experiences. Objective To explore the perceptions of preceptors currently supervising athletic training students who participate in immersive clinical experiences. Design Qualitative study. Setting Individual phone interview. Patients or Other Participants Preceptors from various clinical sites (4 females [40%] and 6 males [60%]) with an average age of 41 ± 18 years. Participants also had an average 7 ± 8 years of experience as a preceptor. Data Collection and Analysis Interviews occurred via individual phone interviews using a semistructured interview script. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. A 3-person research team analyzed the data and coded it into domains and categories based on a consensus process. Credibility was established with multiple researchers, an external auditor, and member checks. Results Three domains emerged from the data: (1) exposure, (2) benefits, and (3) insufficient training. Participants stated that as a result of exposure the athletic training students experienced increased responsibility and trust, increased realistic work environment, increased collaborative practice experiences, and skill use and refinement. Preceptors indicated that the added benefits of immersive clinical experiences led to confidence in clinical and professional interactions. Preceptors noted insufficiency in their training, specific to the expectations of an immersive clinical experience. Many preceptors sought out independent learning opportunities to enhance their role as preceptor. There was a misunderstanding as to what the main differences were between traditional and immersive clinical experiences, as well as a lack of communicated or standardized goals and objectives. Conclusions Participants indicated that the immersive clinical experiences were beneficial for the athletic training students' professional development. The insufficiency of training and misunderstanding of the immersive clinical experience are concerning and could be enhanced with clearly set goals and objectives.

Athletic training is a health care profession with roots in athletics and kinesiology that has evolved into a critical component of contemporary sports medicine. The aim of this article is to review the history and evolution of the athletic training profession, contextualize the current state of athletic training education and research, and address priorities and challenges that the athletic training profession must confront if it is to continue to thrive. Specific challenges include addressing health disparities in sports medicine, increasing the diversity of the athletic training profession, clearly delineating athletic training’s place in the health care arena, and increasing salaries and retention of athletic trainers in the profession.

Context Culturally competent care has been on the radar of peer health care professions for many years. The unique patient populations that athletic trainers work with lend us to be at the forefront of delivering truly patient-centered care. However, we have not yet appropriately incorporated this tenet of evidence-based practice. Objective To convey the importance of culturally inclusive care and education to athletic training clinical practice and educational programs. We also present a novel way to intertwine inclusivity in the classroom and the clinic in a way that is accessible at any point in one's cultural competence journey. Background Historically, cultural competence in athletic training education has focused on ethnicity and race. The students we teach and the patients we treat share a variety of cultures that are often forgotten yet need to be included for a more holistic approach. Recommendation(s) Athletic trainers and athletic training educators need to continue the journey toward delivering culturally inclusive care. This journey also needs to extend to the classroom, from the delivery methods of teaching to the way we interact with our students. Teaching priorities should include a focus on the cultures around and within our profession.

Athletic training educators teach in didactic, laboratory and clinical settings, all requiring an array of pedagogical strategies to effectively instruct students. Mosston’s Spectrum of Teaching Styles is a theoretical framework to support pedagogical decision making in physical education. The purpose of the commentary is to examine teaching styles from Mosston’s Spectrum in the context of athletic training education. A general introduction, review of comparative literature and practical application to athletic training education is provided for each of the eleven teaching styles. The examination and application of educational theory from other disciplines may provide athletic training educators additional resources to enhance student learning.
