A promising approach for studying school readiness involves a person-centered approach, aimed at exploring how functioning in diverse developmental domains conjointly affects children’s school outcomes. Currently, however, a systematic understanding lacks of how motor skills, in conjunction with other school readiness skills, affect a child’s school outcomes. Additionally, little is known about longitudinal associations of school readiness with non-academic (e.g., socioemotional) school outcomes. Therefore, we examined the school readiness skills of a sample of Dutch children (N = 91) with a mean age of 3 years and 4 months (46% girls). We used a multi-informant test battery to assess children’s school readiness in terms of executive functions (EFs), language and emergent literacy, motor skills, and socioemotional behavior. During the spring term of a child’s first grade year, we collected academic and non-academic (i.e., EFs, motor skills, socioemotional- and classroom behavior, and creative thinking) school outcomes. A latent profile analysis revealed four distinct profiles. Children in the “Parent Positive” (29%) profile were rated positively by their parents, and performed variably on motor and language/emergent literacy skills tests. The second profile–“Multiple Strengths” (13%)–consisted of children showing strengths in multiple domains, especially with respect to motor skills. Children from the third profile–“Average Performers” (50%)–did not show any distinct strengths or weaknesses, rather displayed school readiness skill levels close to, or just below the sample mean. Finally, the “Parental Concern” (8%) profile was characterized by high levels of parental concerns, while displaying slightly above average performance on specific motor and language skills. Motor skills clearly distinguished between profiles, next to parent-rated EFs and socioemotional behavior, and to a lesser extent emergent literacy skills. School readiness profiles were found to differ in mean scores on first grade academic achievement, parent- and teacher-rated EFs, motor skills, parent-rated socioemotional functioning, and pre-requisite learning skills. The pattern of mean differences was complex, suggesting that profiles could not be ranked from low to high in terms of school outcomes. Longitudinal studies are needed to disentangle the interaction between emerging school readiness of the child and the surrounding context.

Abstract Background Clinical placement models that require students to relocate frequently can cause stress, which may impact the student experience and development of work-readiness skills. A blended placement, where placements are undertaken concurrently at one location has potential to address these issues by providing a positive placement experience. Blended long-stay placements undertaken in rural communities increase consistent service provision and may help encourage students to work rurally, with potential to reduce workforce shortages. The aim of this study was to pilot test the feasibility of blended placement models and explore the student experience and skills development. A secondary aim was to explore a fully blended long-stay rural placement and the benefits to the rural community. Methods An exploratory qualitative design was used. Focus groups were conducted with dietitian student who participated in usual placements (n = 14) or blended placements (n = 9). Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with five student supervisors who participated in blended placements. Focus groups and interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed together using inductive thematic analyses. Results The overarching theme across all blended model placements was ‘enhanced work-readiness’, including increased flexibility, organisational skills and better preparedness for mixed roles. Enhanced work-readiness was influenced by three themes: stress and wellbeing impacts learning, working in two areas of practice concurrently allows for deeper learning, and blended placements meet supervisor needs. Fully blended long-stay rural placements revealed additional benefits. Firstly, in relation to the overarching theme ‘enhanced work-readiness’: students on these placements also developed extra skills in innovation, social accountability, interprofessional collaboration, conflict resolution and teamwork. Secondly, a new overarching theme emerged for fully blended long-stay rural placements: ‘increased community connections’ which included additional health services delivery, deeper personal experience and more rewarding student-supervisor relationships. Thirdly, two extra themes emerged that influenced work-readiness and community impact: ‘local organisational support and resources’ and ‘enhanced innovative and interprofessional learning opportunities’. Conclusions Blended placements enhance work-readiness skills by providing an alternative model to that commonly applied, and providing flexibility in education programs. Additionally, fully blended long-stay rural placements positively influence the local community through impacting the student experience as well as providing more dietetics services and may therefore assist in reducing dietetics workforce shortages and health inequity.

Students who enter kindergarten without school readiness skills are more likely to demonstrate academic, behavioral, and social struggles during school. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are particularly at risk for underdeveloped school readiness skills, which can undermine academic achievement, and result in poor long-term outcomes. The purpose of this article is to synthesize literature that aligns with a widely used Office of Head Start’s model of school readiness, applied to children with ASD, and to present critical gaps in research and opportunities for practice that may improve school readiness in this population. Research in this area may ultimately help to enhance service delivery that improves preparation for school and, therefore, later academic and long-term life outcomes for students with ASD.

Abstract Background Most childhood-onset rheumatic diseases are chronic health conditions, which need long-term care throughout adulthood. A well-organized transition care is challenging and patient assessment of transition skills is needed for transfer preparation to an adult care setting. The Transition Readiness Assessment Questionnaire (TRAQ) is used to assess transition skills in chronically ill patients. Currently, limited transition skill assessment data exist in pediatric patients with rheumatic diseases, especially in Asian countries. This study aimed to determine the transition readiness skills in patients with rheumatic diseases and ascertain predictive factors contributing to high transition readiness skills. Methods This is a cross-sectional study. All patients with rheumatic diseases aged 15–20 years were recruited. The TRAQ was cross-culturally adapted into the Thai language with good internal consistency and reliability. Patients completed the Thai TRAQ at the recent clinic visit and took the retest at a 2-week interval. Demographic data, baseline characteristics, clinical manifestations, and disease status were collected. Descriptive and logistic regression analyses were performed. Results A total of 111 patients with a mean age of 17.4 ± 1.8 years were included. Median (IQR) disease duration was 6.4 (3.2–9.0) years. The most common rheumatic disease was juvenile idiopathic arthritis (48.6%), followed by systemic lupus erythematosus (35.1%). The mean TRAQ score was 3.85 ± 0.69. Independent visits (OR 4.35, 95% CI 1.23–15.37) was a predictor of a high TRAQ score. Furthermore, dependent visits (OR 7.84, 95% CI 2.41–25.50) was a predictor of low TRAQ score in the “appointment keeping” domain, whereas inactive disease (OR 4.54, 95% CI 1.25–16.55) was a predictor of a low TRAQ score in “tracking health issues” domain. Lack of knowledge and skills on health insurance coverage, financial management, appointment arrangement, and coping with their illness were issues causing lower TRAQ score. Conclusions Patients, who had independent visits, had a higher chance to obtain higher TRAQ scores, whereas patients, who had an inactive disease or dependent visits, had less transition readiness skills. Physicians and parents should prepare to transfer patients to adult care settings, mainly encouraging independent living skills.

ABSTRACT The aim of the paper is to explore the effectiveness of Communication Skills Training Program in Developing Some Visual Perception and Writing Readiness Skills for Kindergarten Children. A semi-experimental, pre-post-test for the two groups (experimental and control) was employed. Participants were 30 children. They aged between 5 and 5.7 years (M=5.3 years, SD=0.984). Two groups were constructed with equal number of children for each (experimental = 15 children, of which 9 were girls, while 6 were boys, and control = 15 children, of which 10 were girls, while 5 were boys). A program was applied to the experimental group (12 sessions; 3 sessions per week; each session lasts for 20-25 minutes, total period or application = 4 weeks, that is a month). Results advocate the effectiveness of the employed raining program.
